I had started doing Lyra when I lived in CT but after moving to San Diego, I had fallen into a serious bout of laziness and depression. I decided to get myself up of the couch before my abs became so mushy, that getting up was no longer an option and so, I went in search on a Lyra studio. The first place I tried was a big name in the area and I found it very disappointing. I found the instruction lacking and the very young instructor was unable to assist those who aren't 20-year-old gymnasts. I left frustrated and disappointed, feeling bad about myself and all the strength I had lost during my time on the couch.
After a few days though, I found myself, again, really missing the kind of fun I had as a beginner at my old studio. So I rekindled the search. This time I looked for a smaller place and stumbled on Volare. It had two things going against it: it is far away from me (13 miles, which by city standards might as well be in Arizona) and there was no reduced rate for your first class. I still had a very good feeling about it.
Beginner Lyra wasn't happening until Friday so I took a pole class earlier in the week. Nikki, the instructor, is a tiny, pixie who flies around the pole and manages to do so without making the rest of us feel inadequate. Everyone in the class had a great time and she did some things I hadn't had a chance to do at my last studio. She also told us that our second class is free for first time clients! (Yay for me client discounts!) Lyra on Friday was even better. I loved the instructor, Juliana, from the second I met her. There was only one other woman in the class, who was a new pole instructor at the studio, so it was practically a private lesson. I got to work muscles that had been long asleep. Juliana had to help me with my mounts ( I never was good at those) and getting from Amazon, back into the hoop (because my abs said, what is this? This is so much harder than sitting on the couch!) I felt fulfilled.
I have talked to two other women who went, once, to the big name studio and had a disappointing experience. I will definitely recommend to those women that they try again at Volare.
