I'm not sure why everyone is hating on this place? It's a good gym, everything is clean, the staff is friendly, and as long as you don't go during peak hours then there is plenty of equipment available. As far as billing goes this stuff is sort of standard practice with any gym. Usually there is a start-up fee of "x' then monthly payment of $29 a month plus sales tax, not bad compared to other gyms I looked at. I think the start up fee was about $120? If I remember correctly, either way that's just how gyms work.. And as far as the yearly fee, that's how your gym maintains everything people, weather it be new equipment, upgraded lockers or whatever, and that wasn't even that bad at $60. I like this gym. Only reason it got 4* was there is no sauna or steam room...

Great affordable gym in Fremont/Wallingford. I was a member here for 2 years and always had a positive experience. Staff has always been friendly and if you avoid the busiest hours, you can always get on the equipment you want to use. They have free parking underneath the gym.

Experienced a great tour of the facility. They offer many options for a thorough fitness regimen. Very welcoming staff. Clean and well maintained. Top notch equipment. Definitely like their hours for my convenience!

Very unprofessional staff. They cannot keep up to their appointments. You will find the perfect sales personnel who can sell supplements here.

Not so great. . . Parking's non-existent during peak hours. And while the facility is fine, the never-ending solicitations for personal training get old pretty fast. When they give you your initial consultation, the trainer will work you to the point of collapse, in front of everyone at the gym, in hopes that you'll feel pressured into signing up for private personal training. . . So that's super fun.
My industry gets busy in the Summer and I had some vacation time planned, so I knew I wouldn't be making use of my membership. When I signed up I asked about the policy for putting a membership "on hiatus". At the time I was told that a membership on hold and pay 50% of my normal monthly dues, indefinitely. Well, this summer I asked to place my membership on hold for 203 months. I was informed that was no longer possible. . . Hey, ECA! Bait and switch much?
I'll probably keep going there because I live close enough to walk there, so parking isn't an issue. But I would never recommend this gym to anyone.

I went into Emerald City Athletics to start my free trial and I was very taken aback by the experience and will not be returning. It was made abundantly clear to me that the expectation was that I should be at the gym to lose weight or gain muscle. This excludes anyone that works out for other reasons such as maintenance, mental health or general wellbeing. My height, weight and BMI were all measured without asking whether I wanted them to be. I was then shown pictures of women's stomachs and asked which one looked like mine and which one I would like to look like. Not only was this offensive, it was a violation of privacy. Much more attention was given to my body then I was comfortable with. By showing me these pictures it was also suggested that there is a problem with bodies of different shapes, sizes or colors. Many women would not find a picture that they would identify as themselves or as their goal among those they showed. I find this one size fits all approach to the recruitment program very problematic. I understand that some people do want to set fitness goals with a trainer but I believe that these should be self-defined and optional. The recruitment approach I experienced at Emerald City Athletics is based on a tactic that tears down a persons self-esteem and makes them dependent on the gym to build it back up again. This is abusive and unethical.

This gym is clean and well-equipped. There are plenty of machines and free weights. The locker rooms are exceptionally clean and well-maintained. Their class schedule is a bit limited, and the yoga classes are a challenge because you hear a lot of the noise from the rest of the gym.

The staff can be a little pushy to sell nutrition products and personal training sessions.

When I cancelled my membership to move out of the country, they continued to charge me for four months. After calling and emailing, I was told they have no record of the cancellation, and therefore cannot refund me the money. Look at other reviews, you'll see the same story. Ultimately, I brought up the issue to management via the BBB, and was promptly refunded the money. I recommend holding onto your original contract.

Not only did they pull an "hard sell" on me, but they also did on my 20 year old daughter when she was by herself. They made her feel so uncomfortable that she refused to ever go back. They also make it a complete pain in the ass to cancel membership even after I moved and no longer live in the state.

I saw a that ECA was doing a "Grand Re-Opening" so I thought maybe they changed their practice of high-pressure sales tactics. BOY WAS I WRONG!!! I emailed to see what the costs are for joining and they tried every trick in the book to avoid giving me even a ball-park idea. I'll never join. There are too many other good options in the city to have to put with ECA's hogwash.

I was a loyal customer of this gym for almost three years, and I am SO disappointed with the bad business ethics they displayed in the end.

Cancelled my membership, as I am moving out of the country. They continued to charge me for four months (that's over $200 of gym fees I won't be using). I've called, visited, and emailed. Every time I've been told the same thing: they have no record of the cancellation, and therefore cannot refund me the money. Look at other reviews, you'll see the same story. At BEST they are disorganized, at WORST, they are scamming people out of hard-earned money. I would happily change my review if they made this right and refunded me the money.

If I could give this place a zero I would... This is the worst gym I have ever have been a member of!!! DO NOT JOIN!!! The gym is so mediocre and the staff is super pushy and just tries to sell you shit you don't need... Additionally, when my 12 month contract was up at this shitty place kept charging me each month. At this point I had just moved to California and I tried to call and immediately cancel it... The lady told me I had to write a certified letter explaining why I had to end my gym membership that should have already been over because I had completed my 12 month contract. To make things worse, I sent the stupid ass letter and they still charged me another $65 bucks because they said they needed 30 days notice. THIS PLACE IS F'd UP!!!!!!!!

Staff is cool, equipment is good, music usually sucks (bring your own)
Edit (3-31-18): music has gotten better. also gotten kinda cramped during peak hours, but overall still decent gym choice.

I reached out to Emerald City Athletics over email to inquire about membership fees. They would not provide me with any information over email and insisted (over 5 emails) that I need to come in to hear about rates.

I don't have time to waste an hour on a sales pitch.

This was the final communication which might help determine if this club is right for you (it wasn't for me):

"if price is your only factor to determine where you'll be going; this may not be the right club. If service and results are a factor, we'd love to help you with your goals whenever you decide to get started toward them. Please stop by and we will be happy to explain how our personalized fitness assessment; customized program design and monthly progressions can facilitate that for you."

I love this gym! It is always clean and the staff are so friendly. Such great memberships that come with A LOT of stuff. It's unbelievable. Definitely recommend this place!

Decent gym, a little short on weightlifting equipment, but some very sketchy business practices. I know some gyms make it difficult to cancel, but dang. They only accept monthly payments through your bank account, they charge 60 dollars for the pleasure of renting towels (stamp-sized towels that require your ID as collateral), flakey trainers that are late to appointments or blow them off entirely, and when you finally try to cancel, they hem and haw, requiring a certified letter weeks in advance (or as long as it takes your next payment to process, I imagine.) Really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

the good: I got a great deal financially speaking, the gym has what I need, the hours are good, it is clean and has no frills.

the bad: the hard sell was so hard that I walked out the first time I went in to ask about prices. I was really mad. But because they are so close to where I live, after about a month I decided to give it another try. This time they were even worse, but I was so persistent that when they finally told me how much it was, I immediately said sign me up. It left a bad taste in my mouth. Later my adult son described having the same experience. I see other posts describing the same thing. It's too bad, because it is a good gym for a good price. One other bad thing, some of the equipment is kept in a room where classes take place. The classes cannot be disturbed, so that equipment is unavailable during classes. That is a pain to have work around.

Was set up with a free one week trial. What I didn't know at the time was that the trial comes with an initial hour long selling period. Expect to be asked at least 5 times if you want personal training or if you'd like to join now for a "once in a lifetime deal".

After the selling period and after I said NO to joining immediately and having a personal trainer, they were super short and acted like I DID SOMETHING WRONG.

I didn't want to waste their time. All I was looking for was a gym to work out at and enjoy without personal training or fancy results.

I will not be using my trial and the only thing from what I could tell is that the gym is overcrowded.

Would've joined if there wasn't so much pressure around the sale and making you feel bad for not saying yes to everything they are feeding you.

I really love this gym and have been going for over two years. It is super clean and has good machines that are not crowded when I go mid-morning. There is a great child care room and my son has enjoyed going there while I work out. There is an emphasis on personal training at ECA, and on results. I have found meeting with a trainer motivating, and my current trainer, Kyle Holstra, is excellent. She offers just the right amount of support, understanding, and encouragement. The gym seems to be challenged in retaining training staff, and I have had to adjust to many different trainers. The staff is very friendly, parking is great, facilities are top notch, and overall experience is wonderful!

Joined Emerald City Athletics because it was conveniently located around the corner from my house and have not been disappointed. The facilities are always clean, machines are in great condition, there is just about every machine/equipment you could hope for and the staff is always very friendly.

I've been working out with Randy once a week since I joined six months ago and it is obvious their trainers are invested in your results. If you're looking for a great gym with trainers to work with I highly recommend it.

Started coming here in March on a trail basis, and then became a member a few weeks later.

I train with Randy who is knowledgeable and helpful with heavy lifting exercises and tips about nutrition, among other things. He has helped bring new confidence to my ability in the weight room and I have seen improvements in my technique and overall physique. Would def recommend him as a trainer!

October 23, 2017 08:05

If you are serious about getting results and want a great personal trainer this is the place to go. My trainer, Randy, is very knowledgeable and fun to work with. The supplements they offer are actually trustworthy and will help in achieving your goals. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a place to do cardio every once-in-a-while, find someplace else. This gym is best utilized when you are ready to invest in fitness and actually put in the work. If you are, this is a great place to go and I would highly recommend it.
