Absolutely my worst gym experience. Compel tricked me into signing a 1 year contract for personal training sessions ...BEWARE they use the word COMMITMENT. Thank GOD I cancelled within the 3 days. I also cancelled my gym membership with golds gym, and they charged me for an extra month. I should have follow my truth, and the bad reviews they have!!

All senses of professionalism seem to be lost at this gym. Came in today and wasn't greeted at all. The girl at the front named "Shayla" didn't pay me any mind. Guess whatever was on her phone was more interesting... after my workout I went into the locker rooms and noticed more employees just sitting around. The gym isn't clean, no one here knows how to put their stuff back, and overall it just wasn't a pleasant experience. I will not be signing up here.

1/8/20 update: Gold's just refreshed a lot of their equipment and updated their layout to make the whole place feel a lot less cramped and claustrophobic. It's a big improvement!

words cannot describe my experience at Gold's Gym on the afternoon of Saturday, December 28. it was just a normal day at the gym for me -- cardio machines, running around the track, and the occasional water break (has anyone noticed the fountain water is MUCH warmer lately??). as i was moving onto the leg machine, i noticed that the man before me had not wiped off the equipment -- GROSS! i spoke to the manager at the facility and they offered to wipe it off for me. no way! totally unacceptable! that man needs to be BANNED from this gym. i do not want to catch anything like ringworm or hand, food, and mouth disease. this man must be stopped or i can never come back to this place!!

ps. i have also seen people snorting protein powder in the bathrooms and they offered to sell me some -- no thanks! xoxo

Phoney, immature and judgemental front desk staff. Smiles and goodbyes but when I looked back as I walked up the steps to exit they both were looking directly at me leaned into each other snickering and whispering. Then came the "oh s**t" look because they knew I saw them. This is not the first time I've experienced toxic and unpleasant behavior and bad vibes here by the staff. It's very unwelcoming and I will not be coming back. It's a business not a frat and sorority! Treat ALL customers with respect and stop judging people just trying to pass by.

Equipment is fine but customer service is terrible. Front desk staff never look up from their phones. Willow Lawn staff is much better. They engage their customers and do not stare at their phones constantly. Parking can also be an issue at peak times.

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE "WEEK FREE TRIAL!" Tried it out and went in to cancel before 6 days passed. THEY CHARGED MY CARD ANYWAY. After they gave me the expected "hard sell" I said I just wanted to cancel, and they finally said "ok," without mentioning they were charging me for a month. Now I have to cancel my card, because I don't even trust them to not charge me next month. I had a bad feeling from the beginning, and I'm going to try contacting the main office to get it sorted out. Hopefully they are less sleazy than these people!

I noticed tons of people complaining about their bait-and-switch membership tactics at this location. Since I had a membership from the Willow Lawn location, I never dealt with that part of the business. The location, which is some old converted factory, feels crowded and cavernous. Your first time there you're bound to get lost quite a bit, or not realize that certain rooms even exist. That being said, when I went there a few times, I had no problems. The main reason why I'm giving it a 3 is the lack of machines and space.

Also, be forewarned. The plethora of positive reviews this location has is most likely fake reviews trying to boost their numbers up.

Caveat emptor. Be prepared for a bait and switch. If like me you're enticed by a promotion run near the end of the month (to pad application stats I'm assuming) to join without paying the sign up fees, be aware that any money handed over will not be coming back to you.

When we went in to sign up under this promotion, we were told that the computer system couldn't waive the fees but we'd receive a refund for the difference. After asking about the refund a handful of times over 3 months, still nothing. To add insult to injury, they blamed the delay on their 3rd party processing contractor, but I can see very clearly from my credit card statement the gold franchise (and not the 3rd party processing contractor) was the merchant that processed, and can refund, the payment.

The space is a standard commercial gym, and the run-around given in regards to our refund drives that home. Be prepared for the high pressure sales environment when you go in for your "free trial."

EDIT: I visited with Gold's gym management many times about this issue (4+ times) and every time was given a confused look and "we'll look into it" but nothing ever happened. The response below is typical outward facing fluff.

They call it Gold's Gym because they take your Gold and make it their own Gold. If I had not ripped by adenoid on one of their rusty machines, I would guess that ithis place is a front for a skimming operation

This place is literally a $ trap. Family and I have been loyal customers for over a year now and after my debit card was stolen and my new one was updated they again charged my old card until they were able to get through by charging my new updated debit card that they had on file the whole time but not without charging a late fee. Just canceled my membership and my family as well as friends will be doing the same and going elsewhere.

Terrible customer service, DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM.

i have been to plenty gold's gyms over the years and this has got to be the worst. first of all a lot of the equipment is old and the gym is small. but ultimately this gym is terrible because they explicitly told me that I could sign up for a deal that would allow me to test out the gym and my money would be refunded to me if I changed my mind within 2 weeks..which I did but as of now I am STILL waiting for the manager to get back to me. and this was in July. they never paid me back. I called and talked to two ppl in person on 2 separate occasions and was told both times that this issue would be rectified. but that was a lie. then I emailed the manager and still no response.

HONESTLY THIS GYM IS A WASTE OF TIME. THE FACILITIES ARE SUB PAR AND THE STAFF IS UNPROFESSIONAL. STAY AWAY AND SAFE YOUR MONEY

Excellent first impression. Gym is clean and quiet, and they were totally understanding that I have membership elsewhere. No pressure from the salesman, a fellow RAM. If I'm in town after I graduate, this will totally become my home gym.

Love this gym! Great facility and super nice management. The manager really went above and beyond to help me out with transferring my membership when I moved to Richmond- he even reimbursed me when the corporate office messed up and overcharged me 100 dollars, even though he didn't have to since it was their mistake. Definitely a stand out gym with a great community.

BEWARE - This gym does not honor the free one day VIP pass available on their website. I went in expecting to be able to workout and get a feel for the gym before deciding on purchasing a membership - as I've done at many other Gold's Gym locations throughout Virginia - but instead was told that at that location, the free pass is just to get people to come in to hear their sales pitch. Not only that, but the girl working the front desk was rude and unwilling to accommodate my potential membership around my school year schedule - as the much more personable locations have. To top it all off, from what I did see of the gym, the atmosphere didn't seem conducive to hard work as any good gym should. I 100% recommend you take your business to the Willow Lawn location over this one, it's your money so you should get the best out of it!

In short, the vibe was so bad it inspired me to come here and write review of it!

Cary street Golds is an excellent facility. Four floors of everything you would want in a gym. Very friendly and helpful staff. I really appreciated the great September membership deal. As a gym rat over 40 years this golds has it right.

I was talked down, and bothered for 30 minutes into being a "gold" member at this gym by the manager. I was convinced it was worth it and i would get access to all the other gold's gyms and access to more rooms ? Anyways, comes to find out you cant use a Gold membership which costs 40 dollars anywhere else. Everyone there will stare at you and its entirely too small. Expect to be waiting for an hour to use one machine. Some equipment may be broken. Still being charged a month even though I dont even live in virginia anymore. Snotty employees only acknowledge certain people.

Easy to sign up. Didn't feel pressured at all for an upsale to the gold membership. Dana was very helpful and chill.
