Have not enjoyed myself more than learning something that will translate into the real world. The instructors do a great job of breaking down what you are doing wrong in order to get it right so you don't take the room temperature challenge in a sketchy situation.
This is an impressive school with an impressive instructor. Mr. Mase teaches the art of Tang Soo Do in a way that keeps students engaged. He stresses practical application of martial arts in a manner the youngest students understand without working beneath the older ones. The classes are taught in a atmosphere of cooperation and friendly competition with safety utmost in mind. That said, it is not a class for wimps; real life defense is taught.
Tl;dr: traditional, intense, honest
I've been a student here for over a year. I respect the instructor, Mr Mase, incredibly. I knew from the name that this is a school with integrity. It's not perfect, but you will get out more than you invest. I recommend both Tang Soo Do and Krav Maga
Pros:
-highly traditional Korean-American martial arts
-dedicated instructor
-great new facility
-two excellent martial arts
Cons:
-limited times (T-Th+Sat)
-mixed age and rank groups
Overall, I'd rate this school very high, and I'm proud to be a member here.
Anyone who has done martial arts for awhile knows that finding a good school can be tricky. After all, the belt system is hardly standardized, making it hard to go by, and there's all sorts of credentials instructors can throw at you. That said, I'm very impressed by the Five Rings Dojang. Master Mase not only has the experience, but he has credentials that would impress anyone. As far as the actual classes go, the school is located in a larger gym, a membership to which will be part of your tuition. To me, this is pretty awesome, as I can get myself nice and tired before class with some cardio, and climb the big rope next to the mat between classes for some additional punishment. In addition to the location, Master Mase can be very creative with the lessons, especially in Krav Maga, bringing to the table drills that will make you dig deep for the strength or sheer force of will to succeed. Tang Soo Do classes are composed of students of all ages, which was a little unusual to me, but there's usually enough students of each age group (child, teen, adult) that nobody is paired with a partner vastly different in age/size. Overall, I recommend it to anyone interested in one or both of the arts offered at the school.
A wonderful environment to learn practical application of Tang Soo Do. Master Doug is great with all ages. We go to classes weekly and every week we build on what we've learned. He makes sure to take the time to teach how to be a better element on our world, not just how to punch and kick. I highly recommend this dojang and the Tang Soo Do class!
Best place to learn Tong soo do! Glad my parents signed me up for this!
