My daughter had a private lesson with Coach Jennifer and really learned a lot in 1 short hour!
Very poor coach last season, she damaged many of the girls self esteem and we never won a set until the situation got so bad we as parents intervened. And at that upper management was completely unaware of how poorly our team was doing. They have a few teams that get excellent coaching but they seem more focused on presenting a great front and once in it rapidly deteriorated. Moved on to a different club this year and already a night and day difference
Unfortunately, there are very few coaches in any organization that are there to make teams better. There are always ulterior motives behind their being a coach. Most organizations do have at least a few coaches that do care enough to take time during practice to give their players the opportunity to get better. And AVA certainly has at least a few coaches that are SUPERB.
With that said, I have never in my life seen a coach chastise or belittle players. Unfortunately, that is the situation that I am being presented with currently. There is a fine line between berating players, and trying to motivate or encourage them. The coach in question has gone way beyond what I thought would be acceptable motivation. My only advice would be to RESEARCH your specific coach, and past experiences that they have had.
I should update this to say that it has finally become out of hand, to where a parent needs to finally get involved because Coach Lynn has basically belittled, shown significant favortism, discrimination, unfairness, AND inequality in judgment of specifically TWO players ... for what reasons?; I can only guess ... which I dare not do.
Of course, I am not privileged to have all the information that a coach or the club has; it is however evident by watching about 30 minutes of an athlete play beside another to see differences in the performance/ability of each.
Going to go ahead and downgrade the prior 2 star rating ... as it has become obvious that the organization is aware of the rather pious coaching of this specific individual and will not be addressing the issue ...
In addition: When a coach adresses a players concerns with generalities in lieu of adressing specific issues ... Such as asking a player "Are you doing your job?" ... and they answer say "Yes" ... then the coach asks the very same lousy question again ... You begin to know they are full of themselves or avoiding the "REAL" ISSUE. If the many issues were HANDLED by saying ... You are having problems here ... and this is what you can do to better yourself in this area. That would be one thing ["It is called Coaching"] ... but to belittle and attack a players character and generalize about them is ludicrous and goes directly against the clubs mission statement stating they would teach individual players to develop them into the best possible athlete they can be. It goes against their program philosophy to establish positive relationships and respect between AVA , athletes and their families, coaches, administration and community.
To sum it up ... It is "PISS POOR COACHING".
Their passing camp that is featured in the month of May and June was a waste of money, the kids that are 12 year olds who know what their doing have to work with the younger kids, the coaches never give them instruction because the are jotting down there little notes, or always helping the others. Some of the time the coaches would be talking to each other instead of even helping the kids! In my opinion it would be better to get your child some private lessons or put them in a camp somewhere else. I waste of money, sorry to say but it is.
