Your basic gym. It was recently remodeled so the equipment is newer. My kiddos enjoy the kids club.

I've been a member for 6 or 7 years. In general, a nice enough , adequate facility, except where the spa is concerned. It is a cesspool, I mean really filthy. It doesn't get cleaned, despite many people making repeated complaints over a period of several months. Unfortunately, management has been repeatedly dishonest in their response, reporting that the spa is cleaned twice a week. Front desk staff have clearly been silenced on the subject.
2 years ago, the same issue was reported to the County Health Dept., and soon afterward the club was compliant in cleaning the spa...for a few months time. Then back to neglect. I need that hot soak for my back, but can't go there any more. It's a public health hazard.

Great gym overall. Good management, and the trainers are knowledgeable. Recently renovated with a large functional training area and brand new power racks. Bonus: Not a meat market like the Pearl location!

I am pleasantly surprised. Clean, up to date, machines are all in order, very professionally managed.and less $$.
After hearing the trash talk from 24Hr about how bad LA Fitness is I think 24 could learn a thing or two about how to clean up the dump they run in Hollywood.
Recommend LA as a competent and spotlessly clean gym.

Standard chain gym. The saline pool is the reason I go there exclusively. Rest of the gym is decent, and most of the front desk staff are great, though a few are rude.

I'm not inclined to love a gym, but this one has been really good to me. The basketball court and racquetball courts are great, but I mostly use the pool, weights, and elliptical machines.

The 25-yard pool is saline and heated. The temp isn't cold enough to be ideal for long workouts, but I regularly swim 2k+ without issue. Swimmers are nice. Often, I'll get a lane to myself, but there are also times when we're circling.

The showers, sauna, hot tub, and locker room are fantastic. The only bummer is a lack of WiFi.

All the TVs have been broken down for over a month. All the vending machines are broken as well, and before that they were always 95% empty. These things aren't a dealbreaker but it is a bad sign...

The patrons of this gym are really bad about reracking their weights. Some people like to take equipment to the complete opposite end of the gym and abandon it there. People are the worst. The gym is a little smelly because it's in a basement. And because of that, your phone gets poor reception. Oh, and they don't offer Wi-Fi. Hope you have music downloaded on your phone 'cause good luck with streaming.

The pros: it is reasonably clean, it's cheap, and you never have to worry about parking. I guess that's enough to keep going here even though it's kinda crappy overall.

As far as gyms go there is a friendly community type vibe to this one that I really enjoy. Been going for two yrs. Love the saline pool & large hot tub/spa. Usually pretty clean.

This used to be a really nice club before it became a discount Club. It is large, generally clean and has a ton of equipment and amenities. The problem is that the employees don't care about their job (they are so inconvenienced to hold up the scanner to check you in and you have to thank them) and the management doesn't care about the building. Example, for about 6 months now the main walkway from the front desk to the locker rooms has been roped off and they have been storing dirty laundry there. Yes, you walk into the building and you have to walk around tons of dirty laundry. I wrote to LA Fitness corporate about this and they replied that they would send my concerns to the general manager at this location. Obviously the general manager at this location knows that they have piles of laundry blocking the walkway to the locker rooms and does not care. This is just ridiculous. Also, the locker rooms are terribly dirty; club towels and member clothes all over the place, gross standing water in the shower area, broken down urinals that stink. I was going to another discount gym in the Hollywood district and the employees there were so nice and helpful that I felt bad leaving them. I will definitely be canceling my membership very soon when I move closer to a 24 Hour Fitness.

I ran a Golds gym for many years. I was an athlete for many years. I was a personal trainer for many years. I'm now a consultant to over 600 athletes/fitness enthusiasts nationwide, including professional and Olympic athletes. And this gym is the most crappy gym with the most delusional out of shape fat personal trainers, I have ever witnessed. For the most part, the trainers are highly overweight and out of shape. The female trainers are simply fat and are "training" people who are in better shape than the personal trainers are. But there is no "training" taking place with these trainers. They simply walk over to a machine and tell their client to use the machine while the trainers stand there and merely count. So basically the fat trainers are just fat repetition counters. And the trainers give the most horrible nutritional advice. I have watched dozens of people actually get fat with the trainers who are telling their clients to "bulk up" first in order to get lean and strong. They use chemicals and the worst toxic supplements I have ever seen. And they're constantly walking around drinking chemical filled sugary energy drinks while giving nutritional advice to people who are in better shape than the trainers are. It's so unbelievable, yet... this is what you can expect to see at LA Fitness. But this also might explain why the turnover rate of employees is so drastically high.

The cardio machines are constantly broken and out of service.

The group classes are lackluster at best and are canceled without notice quite frequently.

The free weights go missing almost every day.

There are NO surveillance cameras in the gym and staff and gym members can get away with anything they want without any accountability.

And the regional manager Darren Wylee has absolutely horrible "Little Man" syndrome. He's a young kid, a child; and his entire staff openly has made fun of him on many levels speaking to fitness members about what a horrible and petty human being and what a childish boss he is. They speak about how he has the emotional instability of a child and will lash out at people based on his consistent irrational behavior. He has even lashed out at LA Fitness members if they do not cower down to his pseudo-authority. And the way LA Fitness has set up their business model gives Darren Wylee as a District Manager full authority to do anything he pleases without any reason or without any substantial, rational, or logical justifications which I guarantee will absolutely cause a lawsuit real soon. He's a mental midget and a liar. Yet tries to convey to the public that anyone who exposes him... is a liar.

I've tolerated this basement gym without windows, with a filthy pool, with filthy locker rooms, with broken machines, with overweight and embarrassing "personal trainers", with fat and rude female "personal trainers", with a lying and spineless, weak minded District Manager who causes more problems than he helps.... for far too long.

I would highly recommend never using this gym or any LA Fitness gym unless you seriously want the bottom of the corporate gym barrel. This place is an absolute deplorable joke and is a complete waste of money.

And though there aren't many horrible reviews on this Facebook page about LA Fitness... I know dozens upon dozens of people who have simply left and abandon even attempting to review the gym on here. They just cut their loses and move on never to return. But this facility has had PLENTY of complaints throughout the community as being an absolute joke.

I will absolutely go out of my way to expose this pathetic company everyday, for as long as they are in business. I hope you avoid the headache and simply go to an actual good company for your fitness needs.

This gym is an embarrassment to even attempt to be a part of. Time to move on.

This was a pretty nice LA fitness in Portland. We stopped here to do a guest lass while we were vacationing in Portland. Gym was decently spacious and had a lot of seventies. The staff was also very friendly. None of the drink machines worked, nor was the smoothie area open, which was a bummer.

I really like this gym. It's unfortunate that others have had a bad experience, but so far things have been positive for me.

I don't own a car and I find this location the easiest to get to. Bus # 8 & 70 will get you close. # 17 even closer. If you have a car, there's ample parking.

If you go here between 5pm and 7pm, it's packed. But by 7:30, things thin out pretty quickly. I use both machines and free weights and can always get a good workout in

In my experience with gyms, the convenience of the location is the biggest seller. This is really the only conveniently located gym near me or my workplace. I've had a subscription since the end of December and have enjoyed going to a few yoga and spin classes. Most of the classes seem to happen earlier in the day, which makes it difficult to go to them with my work schedule. My workout mostly consists of machines and cardio. I've only ever had to wait for a chance at a treadmill once, but I found that pretty frustrating. I almost always go during peak hours- between 6:30-8. I dislike the layout of the gym, I don't understand why the cardio machines have to be facing the free weight, lifting scene and wish there were a better separation of the two. I also think the CrossFit folks would be better served with a dedicated space for their shenanigans.
The crowd becomes a problem in the locker room as well, where people have to wait their turn just to get to their stuff. As other reviewers have mentioned, the fact this is in a basement with poor air circulation makes the body odor, chlorine and laundry detergent smells mix in a bad way.
The positives outweigh the negatives here, it's bigger and has more features than some other gyms I've been to in Portland and in NYC for the price.
Unless another gym opens up in an as convenient spot, I am likely to continue to patronize LA Fitness.

There is nothing redeeming about this gym, other than maybe location. The smell in the main cardio area is terrible. The locker rooms are cringe-worthy. Equipment is constantly out of order and you'll waste 1/2 of your workout waiting for an opening. Worst of all, the aggressive *sneaky* fees are AWFUL - especially when so many other gyms that have moved toward simpler, transparent and CHEAPER membership structures.

I honestly don't see how this chain can compete when so many other gyms are better in every possible way. I guess if you live somewhere there's no other option, and you don't mind overpaying and being treated like a commodity, this might be an option.

February 17, 2018 10:12

The hours are constricting and cater to 9 to 5 ers.

The freeweight area constantly smells bad, and the sauna is not as hot as others around the city are.

I was a member of this gym for 3 years that started in 2015. It was a good gym then. In the last year it all started to come unraveled. The locker room is always messy. The sinks in the locker room do not have hot water period. The sauna isn't that hot. The showers barely get above lukewarm. The soap dispensers are usually clogged or empty. What a disappointment this gym has become. If you are looking to start a membership here, run the other way.

They need to cap enrollment, they are way too busy now. Equipment is obviously aging or nonexistent. Staff is pleasant.

Terrible management - I went in to have my membership adjusted and had a seemingly smooth transaction at the time. I was then billed the following period (two weeks later) as if the adjustment did not happen. I returned and informed management that apparently the change to my membership plan didn't process. They said there was no record the change was made, no record the conversation happened, the employee who I know attempted to make the adjustments denied doing so, and they would not refund me. The manager I worked with was incompetent, at least in the realm of proper management. I called the corporate office: They apologized and refunded me. Ask for paper records of account changes, as they do not know what they are doing, and the customer is not right here. Probably not the poor employees fault - Just inadequate training (like so many of these types of places). Otherwise, the facility is mediocre in cleanliness and maintenance, but a reasonable price for the area and number of locations available in the region.

I joined this gym at a discount through my health insurance program. It isn't great but it isn't terrible. It's frustrating that the only boxing bags they offer are often unavailable because they're all located in the same room that classes are held in. I tried suggesting putting half in a different room but they don't have a suggestion box. The guy I talked to didn't seem to care. He literally told me that the reason they don't have boxing bags in the other room was because they never put any in there. He didn't seem to realize that I was trying to file a complaint/suggestion even though I said "I'd like to fill a complaint/suggestion". Most of the members are highly inconsiderate and never put their weights back. Some day I'll make more money and join a better gym. For now, I'll make the best of it.

October 24, 2017 04:09

Service is mediocre. Hardly see smiles. They do work hard to keep clean it seems.

October 24, 2017 04:09

I quite enjoyed my time here. People don't clean the machines, but there's cleaning material everywhere, which is nice. Locker rooms were clean and the employees were, for the majority, nice. Many machines and classes.
Why I cancelled my subscription. I was passing through medication withdrawal and told the manager I needed to suspend my account for one month. I was told that was impossible since I already payed for the month. For that month I didn't go to the gym. My husband went to talk to them to see if they could just roll that month I didn't go over. They said no because I payed for it (even though I never used that month) then told him, "If you don't like it, you can always cancel the subscription." So I did. That was rude, especially when I was so sick for a whole month, and I just wanted to go lift weights.

Nice district fitness center, especially for middle age customers. Very attentive staff and clean facilities. They have a 3 lane x 25 yard pool, perfectly kept.
