The WOD was decent but the experience overall had some negative aspects. Compared to what I've experienced at other boxes, the atmosphere wasn't as friendly/inclusive and the coach wasn't too comfortable with managing the class if it included anyone new to crossfit.
I've been doing crossfit for a while. My friend and I were on vacation. I wanted to hit up a class, and my friend wanted to try it for the first time. so we decided to drop in. The coach turned my friend away pretty quick. We felt a bit embarrassed and my friend felt like some of the negative things people say about the crossfit scene were true. It sends the message "hey we don't want to take the time to help out newbies". I understand, it can be really difficult and potentially unsafe to manage a squat snatch heavy WOD class AND introduce someone new to crossfit. That being said, I come from a box where they will scale anything and are HAPPY to work with ANYONE. The coaches are so excited to teach you and happy to have you. If the class was large, they would have two coaches. One to lead and the other to help watch form, keep the ratio of student to coach right, or help any newcomers. They were really good at scaling when needed....Instead of a squat snatch, for example, they have you do overhead squats, back squats, or regular snatch. They don't require you to take a crash course in crossfit just to get a feel for what its like. The truth is, you don't know what it's like until you try a class.
My friend went to yoga and I stayed to try out a crossfit class. Some of the class members were friendly and the coach was polite. He gave some helpful suggestions here and there but didn't bother to remember my name until he needed to write it up on the board for scores after the WOD. For every single person that walks in my home box, they make it a point to know your name, introduce you to the rest of the class, and ask that the members introduce themselves to you. This box could learn something from that example. It creates a very inclusive and inviting atmosphere/culture.
Anyway, I don't think I would come here again. I understand the need for safety but I think it's also important to be open minded and flexible. Otherwise, you end up creating some bad experiences for folks hoping to try it out. It's also important to be exited and happy to teach folks, and to show them you care enough to learn their name. These are the little things that can make a crossfit gym a community AND fun place to work out.
