BEWARE!!! Stay away!!
My friend's husband became a member. My Friend was NOT interested. The club created a membership for her anyway (she didn't know!!) and has been charging her husband's card for it. It's been going on for months and they won't stop!!!

Always something broken, not elite at all. Pool is closed down, no steam room and one shower for women. Had to wait in line this morning to shower.

Great gym friendly staff. Classes or places to stretch & do your own workout

If I could give this gym and this company 0 stars I would. It is nearly impossible to cancel your membership. When you try to cancel their computer systems are ALWAYS mysteriously not working. After you do cancel, or at least they tell you that your membership is cancelled and they have taken your credit card off file you will still get charged! DO not EVER sign a membership. Luckily this is NYC and there are so many better gym options.

A very very clean above-average swimming pool. The time to go to this gym is after 9 p.m. at night. Then it won't be so crowded. I wish they would clean the place a little bit. LOL

One of the least expensive sport clubs, NYSC definitely offers value for your money. There is a wide range of classes in three studios, including spin, and a healthy urban energetic vibe. On the downside, equipment is often in disrepair and the place could be cleaner.

NYSC was able to fix the issue on my account - so many thanks for looking into it. I appreciate it.

Moved to the UES. First visit to this club I specifically asked if I could use it or if there would be any additional charges? They told me no. Fast forward 7 months and I have a $160 charge to my card. I ask about it and they tell me it is an elite club it is $20 every time I use the club but since I didnt know that they will refund my money. However to continue using the club I would have to upgrade and pay another $40 a month or $20 every visit. This gym is a mess, dirty, always crowded, machines constantly broken. I was told I was slamming weights too hard doing cleans on the lifting platform, what is the point of the platform then?? I canceled my membership but somehow was still forced to pay for another 2 months for a gym I could not use. I was a NYSC member for over 3 years, will never return!

I had a horrifying experience at NEW YORK SPORTS CLUB ON 91ST AND THRID AVENUE. Please be extremely careful when joining this branch especially if you enroll in their training sessions. I cancelled my sessions as of March 30th, 2018 and have in writing from their head trainer. But in spite of this, they billed my card through July 2018 and claimed that I never cancelled. They will not stop at anything to make money. If you want to save yourself, never enroll with NYSC on third avenue and 91st t- the worst branch ever ! I will make sure I let every social channel know about this incidence with me so that potential customers are aware and can take corrective action. They need to treat there customers justly otherwise they will shut down soon - there is lot of noise about this franchise on 91st and 3rd in social media space.

I signed up at a different gym and they asked if I wanted the elite membership. I asked them if the gym closest to my address is an elite gym. They told me it wasn't. I've just been informed that they've been charging me $20 every time go to work out because it is an elite gym.

I was able to resolve this fairly painlessly by just speaking to the manager of the club. He credited back all the $20 charges to me.

I've just been informed that they've been stealing $20 every time go to work out because it is an elite gym. It is already the worst equipped, stinkiest, overcrowded, most expensive gym I've ever been to. On top of that they're stealing $20 every time I go to workout without even telling me. What a bunch of crooks. There is nothing elite about this gym except the rust on the dumbbells and the stink. I should not have to put up with lies and deceit just to get a workout.

I've been coming for a year because it's distance from my house. They call themselves elite for no other than being in UES. They have oversold memberships and it's always packed no matter the time. I like the classes they have, but even reserving the class sometimes it's so pack I don't even go in. I'm not sure if they don't oversee the number of people going or they just let anyone go in. A lot of machines are old, broken and weights all over the place. The downstairs doesn't have enough ventilation so it's always smelling weird. My brother tried to cancel his membership when it became elite a few months ago and that was a nightmare. It took months to get it done and he had to pay those charges.

This gym moved to 'elite' gym status but nothing about the gym reflects this change. Nothing new added except hundreds of members to contribute to this overrated gym.

The gym is constantly a mess with machines broken, or missing pieces and dumbbells everywhere. It looks like a tornado hit the place.

Good luck getting someone to spot you with how close together everything is. It's nearly impossible to get behind the bench to spot unless you're willing to crawl behind the setup.

The staff pays no mind to class attendance. If you're looking to try out a class where you can smell someone's breath from how close you two are; this is the place for you.

Aside from the horrible environment and old equipments, the way they have dealt with my bills and handling my cancellation was very unprofessional.

For those who want the shorter version of the story, just scroll down.

I was paying for my sister's bill as well as mine. My sister got cancer so I had to cancel her's back in November with the doctor's note. Instead of cancelling, they have frozen my account and charged the cancellation fee AND fee for freezing the account. It took at least three to four months to just cancel my sister's account. Then when they actually canceled, they have canceled mine instead of my sister's so they had to open up a new account.

They have charged me so much fees and monthly dues even after that, they had to put credit on my account - which was never applied to my account and I have been paying for everything.
I did not get any money back but I had no problem just cancelling at this point.
Even cancelling was a long process. The managers were never available to assist. I called and confirmed that the managers are staying at least until 6. I went to two different locations at 3:30 and 4:30. Nobody was there to assist the cancellation and it took almost a week to actually cancel.

On the day of cancellation, the manager says that I will need a 45 day notice to cancel so I told them that I would rather use all my credit to pay off whatever 45 days cost and not deal with this anymore. Final words from the manager was I still owe $20.

I did not even try to argue, just paid, then left.

I am never going to look back.

Summary: it took 3-4 months to actually cancel my sister's - who was diagnosed with cancer - account. They have charged me so much hidden fees and monthly dues even after canceling.
Did not even get to fully use my credits because I was done with them.
It took a week to get the final cancellation due to managers not being at the location.

I just took the Sunday 12.30 Vinyasa Yoga class with Sylvia Smith. She ran the class past the 55 minute time. We left after an hour and 8 minutes. She came in late and never asked if anyone had injuries or needed accommodations or differentiation. She did not smile or welcome students to her class. The room was loud because of the heating equipment and it was hard to hear her. She did not wear a microphone. She was snarky and rude when members couldn't follow the poses correctly. Mostly because we couldn't hear her across the room and her instructions were not clear. This was my husband's first yoga class in years and she was using her feet to correct his poses! Very unprofessional! She pushed me hard in my back to correct my chair pose which was painful! I left feeling uncomfortable and in a bad mood which is not an experience I have ever had taking yoga. She clearly has little patience for beginner yoga students. Unfortunately she is the only teacher on the weekends. Please put in another teacher. Sylvia Smith may be good at yoga herself, but she is by far the worse yoga teacher I have ever encountered.

Has everything you want in a gym. Staff is helpful with any request. Has a great layout. Showers are amazing. Never find it too crowded.

February 7, 2018 10:10

The staff is mostly helpful but the manager of this club would warrant a negative stars review. I injured myself pretty badly at the club, and there were no bandaids. I understand that the club manager can't be there all the time, but he is actively avoiding my phone calls and emails and any attempt to contact him. He was rude and dismissive to me, and threw his staff under the bus and out and out lied to me. I don't think that is a good manager or leader. The club's fans break down regularly, the extreme heat, humidity and not having a basic first aid kit stocked are multiple OSHA violations. Not returning customer correspondence is just poor management and service. I'd love to speak to someone about this so i can cancel my membership but hard to do when the manager won't return any phone calls or emails.

UPDATE: After being told that I wouldn't be charged for the month of March, I was! AND after reviewing my account I was charged an extra $5 in November as well as $20 in January. Unacceptable.

Since October 2017, I started to see charges on my credit card from NYSC East 91, on top of the cost of my regular membership. When I went to the club to inquire about the charges, the manager was not on site and I had to speak to the ladies at the front desk. It was very loud and I could barely hear them and they made no effort to speak louder, they couldn't care less about helping me. They said that since last year, this club became an Elite club and all visits would cost me an additional $20 per visit. When I asked what made it an Elite club, they didn't provide me with any answer. I told them that I never signed any agreement and was never informed of the change, but gain they didn't care and just pointed at a small sign standing by the front desk that no one reads.
Pulling my credit card info and charging me additional cost is Fraud by the way.
When I asked what could be done, again, they didn't care and just shook their shoulders.
I told them I've heard about the grandfather membership from my friend (which they should have told me about) and when they checked my visit logs they said I missed it by 2 visits. How convenient, I remember at least 3 times visiting this location and their badge scanner did not work. What a scam.
I have been a NYSC member for years and visited this location hundred of times.
First they took away the location on 86th and Lex, and now I can't visit this one either? This is ridiculous and unacceptable.
Calling this gym Elite when nothing was improved or added inside the club is just a big scam.

If I could, I would give 0 stars. This club never processed my membership cancellation and stole over $300 from me. I have asked numerous times for their help in refunding my money and they refuse. Additionally, my gym log confirms I visited 0 times over the months that I paid for and shouldn't have. Poorly managed, dirty facility and I truly would not recommend joining this gym.

Not an extensive amount of gym equipment, and the weight area is pretty small so don't bother going between 5-8pm on weekdays or you'll be standing around most of the time. Its clean and has free towels which people actually use so that's a plus. Although if there are a lot of people in the weight room it starts to smell a little funky sometimes.

I have been a member of this gym for the last three years and now I am moving out of the upper east side so I decided to cancel my membership.

I came in one day and spoke with the girl at the front desk and told her I wanted to cancel my membership. She went into her computer and said it was processed.

I was not informed of the 30-day cancellation policy, nor of the fact that I have to speak with the manager or send a letter to cancel the membership.

Now I see that I was charged for August even though I cancelled my membership in July.

I called the club and tried to speak with the manager Ralph but he is not returning my calls.

Instead of doing the right thing and giving me a call back immediately, he chose to evade the issue.

If you want to sign up as a new member they will suck up to you with deals promising you the world, but if there is a problem all of a sudden no one knows anything and no one is accountable.

This is their business policy.

Even while I was there I noticed many issues. One of the best yoga teachers in NYC teaches a class there and this was pretty much the only reason why I kept the membership.

I could never sign up for the class online because the system did not work and they were always disorganized with scheduling people for classes.

One time the class was even interrupted because someone was supposed to have a birthday party in the same studio and they messed up the scheduling.

There were other times when I froze my membership because I was travelling but they still billed me for the $70.

I guess they are used to catering to clients that don't see a $70 drop as significant on their bank statement, so they just assume this is standard practice.

To return to my cancellation policy, not only was my membership not cancelled when I requested it, I was billed for an additional month, and they even had the nerve to bill be for part of September.

I will dispute all of these charges and not let these extortionists keep a single cent.

The most surprising thing about the whole ordeal is that they could have just gave me a $70 refund straight away and apologized no hassle.

Instead I will now write bad reviews for them everywhere and actively campaign in telling everyone I know to stay away from this place.

Free weight section is located in the basement and it absolutely stinksss down there of sweaty dudes. There is absolutely no ventilation. Looks like a 24h fitness. Just moved to this area and thinking of cancelling my membership because I just can't work out there. It really smells. Also the entrance to the ladies locker room is located down there so there's no way to escape the stink.

My trainer Ron Baez is simply the best. Personable and very knowledgeable. Sessions are always terrific.

October 18, 2017 11:15

My experience was so similar to Adam Holoubek's (see below). This gym has the worst customer service ever. My brother, a student intern (No student rates at this gym!!!), signed up June 1st under the condition that he was only going to use the gym for two months until August 1st. Not only did they bill us for August and refuse to refund, but because there is a 45 day cancellation policy that they don't tell you about outright, they are also charging us half the month of September.

Because of this, I told them that I was cancelling my own membership and they couldn't have cared less. They could have easily refunded my brother and retained me as a member. Instead, I will have to negatively review NYSC and warn my friends from joining. I hope they are happy with their extra month and a half of payment instead of collecting for the long-term.

This place is awful and stay away!
