This place used to be a well run neighborhood gym called the Paris Health Club. It was bought by a company called NFC Amenity Management about four-five years ago and has been in steady decline ever since. That is putting it mildly.
The showers hardly ever work, when they do they rarely have hot water. The ceiling regularly collapses leaving crumbled ceiling tile debris and leaking water all over the place. The air conditioning doesn't work in the summer, heat doesn't work in the winter, so there are cheap drug store electric heaters in precarious places throughout the gym, and a huge a/c unit in the middle of the floor surrounded with yellow caution tape. I once unplugged a broken wall fan that was quite literally about to burst into flames when I smelled the odor of melting plastic. It's a miracle no one has been injured!
They once had a really nice pool, it's been torn up and construction has been halted. Locker rooms are disgusting, with carpet on the floor that hasn't been replaced in probably ten years, would be really easy to just rip it out. But no. Nothing is ever done to fix anything.
There's only one working water fountain, the other one has been broken for about three years. How hard is it to get a water fountain fixed in NYC?
The equipement itself is ok, kept in working order I imagine because that's where the big liability is for the owners. But it's old. Newest stuff is ten years old. They used to have cable but now it looks pirated or something, all three of the channels are fuzzy. Maybe they are using an old pair of rabbit ear antennas.
The owners are at best unresponsive, when they do reply to emails asking what the hell is going on, they are indignant and rude. They ruined what was a real gem of a gym.
The only good thing to say about this place is the staff and trainers are very friendly and there is despite it all a strong sense of community here. But that has zero to do with what the gym itself offers, and just shows what resilient and patient people we Uppers West Siders are.
I am posting a photo of today's disaster, it will give you a good idea of what the current status quo is. It's the one with the blue tarp and yellow caution tape, after another ceiling collapse. The photos of people working out in a cool looking loft, of rows on nice cardio equipment, are not of this gym. The photo of the once glorious pool and hot tubs is old, there's a big dirty hole there now. I have flagged them, hopefully Google removes them soon as they are misleading (a generous euphemism for lying).
