This is my first time at nysc. I was unclear about which membership is best for me. I am a college student and a full time single mom. I wasnt even sure I could afford it. I took a risk and got and called. I was able to get a month free and some discounts. I am very greatful for Ms Fernandez, she was very approachable and helped me figure out the right plan for me. She was very informative and gave me information on all activities and gym offers. The gym was very clean and was a reasonable price.

After moving to the city, I tried the free trial that NYSC offers. The gym wasn't for me and I decided to go elsewhere. But for the past 7 months they have continued to call me with a sales pitch, to try to get me to sign up. Despite asking to be taken off their call list several times, and speaking to the manager, i'm still getting calls. Since they can't seem to stop harassing me, i'm posting this.

I wrote a review easier. Just an update - I canceled the membership after getting charged $50, then $60, then $75 without any heads up. I was then reduced from $75 to $60, then they raised the rate to $75 several months later without updating me again. I then blocked the amount on my card, they then charged 1 cent more so it would go through, which I then had to waste time fighting. They now just tried to charge me $49.03, but it was declined by my provider. Obvious harassment. I'm not sure if they need to hire a consultant to fix their systems or what's going on, but I don't recommend working with this company. They'll just waste your time and incorporate shady business practices to gain revenue. I was a 5 year customer and this is how they treated me. I'm sure they'll reach out to offer fixing it, but they just don't get it. Needs new management.

The facility is ok. Some of the equipment could be updated. They raise rates randomly then if you try to cancel, they lower them, only to raise them again several months later. Had it happen twice. Not very ethical business. I even had to block them on my credit card. Totally inconvenient as well. I wish they would have a total cost breakdown and honest pricing disclosure with rate raise warnings like a typical gym.

This place is very clean and neat.
Mary gave me a tour around the gym. She was great! Helped me as well to plan my membership.
Thank you!

If you become a member with NYSC make sure to check what they bill you every month. They will try to charge you for higher memberships, annual dues and late fees without confirming anything or having any signed agreements to reflect the higher charge. Late fees they will charge you even when you have the same active credit card on auto pay and try to argue with you when you reach out. Not worth your time or money since the gym is small, machines constantly aren't working and it's crowded.

NYSC is a great place to be , the classes are incredibly helpful as are the instructors and the personnel trainers, the staff is very helpful and they have a wide variety of equipment to chose from, you can workout without being hassled and gain great results ,I love it there

Do not go here. They failed to cancel my membership in early 2018 and let it run for months after I directed them to cancel it. Then approached me nearly a year later requesting updated card information so that they could bill me. I had to email the same person 4 times to get my membership cancelled, and when they finally did, they attempted to bill me for an additional month OVER A YEAR AFTER THEY SHOULD HAVE CANCELLED MY MEMBERSHIP ORIGINALLY.

You can expect them to ignore your requests, then repeat over and over again how "they don't see any notes on your account" as evidence that you've never made any requests. Strongly considering retaining an attorney to recover the months I was billed for incorrectly.

May 6, 2019 18:21

$49.99 a month, it's not really. Just say you'll go to Blink down the street and they'll give you it for $25.99 like they did for me.
Cancelled my membership 3 weeks ago but they decided to charge me the $60 renewal yearly fee anyway and wont refund it.
Refund my $60 and I'll take down this delightfully true review.

November 2018 Update - Things are getting worse here! The main (and only) studio class is developing a serious and spreading mold problem on the ceiling. Picture attached. This is a health hazard! And this is where they bring people to exercise at full capacity and breathe in the toxic air. This gym has no way of opening any of its windows. Also, anyone know what is that heavy, industrial smell in the Spinning room that never goes away? I'm scared to find out. Also, the only bathroom in the gym, aside from the locker room bathrooms, that's located on the main workout floor has been "temporarily out of service" for more than a month. Picture attached. On the same floor, the barbell lifting corner has been "temporarily unavailable" for weeks now... And they have elegantly closed it off with a garbage can and plastic strings. Looks lovely. Picture attached. Both of the rowing machines have had their "temporarily out of service" warnings removed, but they're actually both broken. Regardless if you select setting 1 or 10 as a resistance, you'll get the same thing - they're almost impossible to row for more than 5 minutes. Multiple cardio machines on the main floor need fixing too, and I've brought up this issue to the management, but I don't think anyone there knows what they're doing. And, just to confirm, the cleaning and vacuuming of the gym is still happening during the busy hours, regardless of how many people are on the floor working out. So don't be thrown off by a guy vacuuming around your feet while you're trying to focus on lifting the weights. Also, EVERY hand sanitizer dispenser on each floor has been empty since.. well, I can't even remember the last time they were filled. They're desperately trying to save every $ at your expense people. At this gym, anything goes. I am happy to say, I'm finally cancelling the membership and moving on to another neighborhood gym. This place would not be worth it even at $5 a month.

I only go here because the place is around the corner. Most of the staff cannot even say "hello" when you come in.. forget about a smile or anything you'd expect from "customer service" - none of that. Staff looks like they're all in deep depression. Also - It's the DIRTIES gym I've been too.. It's so dusty, if you leave the towel somewhere and pick it up, you'll pick up a cloud of dust after it. And when the cleaning people are cleaning, it's not when people are not there - they will do it while you're working out.. going around you with a vacuum cleaner, hitting your machine, spraying window cleaning products near you.. seriously - whole management of this place is a total joke! For a month now, both rowing machines are not functioning properly.. many treadmills often break down and are not fixed for a long time.. And dear NYSC - please do not respond with an automated copy/paste message asking us to reach out to some email address if I want to address any of these problems.. I recommend you take all these negative reviews seriously, step up and deal with these issues professionally.

Way overpriced even at $50 a month plus a nice surprise $60 annual fee. Equipment is frequently broken, it's the most obnoxiously crowded gym I've ever been to, towels have fun mystery stains, music from classes are so loud I can't hear my own music on my headphones, the water filters haven't been changed in months, there's not enough lockers at peak hours and the near fights that almost break out are a bit distracting. The only bright spot is the staff is friendly although not always helpful.

The areas by the windows are extremely hot, even the water fountain in the area is warm.
They need a better cooling system in those areas or even shades would help. Otherwise, more benches would be helpful since they always seem to be used. Overall good gym.

Update: the gym has listened and everything is nice and cool now! Now we just need some now benches

Decent, of the NYSC in the city, it's one of the better ones. Crowded during peak times and nearly impossible to workout

July 23, 2018 13:17

I had to make a last minute move out of NYC. I was willing to eat one month of fees, but I had to eat two! I didn't even get the option to use my membership credit at another club to where I moved to. The support line isn't helpful, no one at the club was helpful for this move, and overall it was a very negative experience

Did not get refund for 7 business days and general manager, Catherine, was not helpful and rude.

May 16, 2018 13:23

I went and asked for a day pass, which is 15 USD. The manager, Catherine Dulman, told me I could get a 10-day pass for 5 USD by signing up for a subscription and cancel within the 10 days if I didn't want it.

I emailed her the next day to cancel the subscription and never received a reply. I called several times and was lied to about the manager being out (similar to what other reviews indicate). I was charged a total of more than 100 USD before they finally cancelled my subscription. When I went by to ask to be refunded, I was told they'd look into it and refund me, but nothing ever happened.

I don't even live in New York, so this whole situation is completely ridiculous. I certainly would not recommend this place.

May 9, 2018 15:28

Nice gym. Close to work. The best weightlifting floor in any NYC gym I've been to so far.

May 3, 2018 06:34

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT JOIN NYSC unless you want to be charged fees and lied to after you have made attempts to speak to someone and when you finally do they just lie.

April 2, 2018 16:17

I do not recommend joining. The equipment is always broken the staff spend time on the phone and it took me over a month to cancel because the staff kept lying about the manager being out. Must have left her 30 messages with the front desk and she replied to ZERO. Finally had to barge into her office and cancel. she had to put the video game she was playing on her phone down to unpleasantly do what i had asked.

March 11, 2018 17:15

Friendly staff and clean facility. A good amount of equipment. Gets busy at peak hours.

February 19, 2018 23:49

Very good gym for the price. Management were pushy for sales like all commercial gyms in NYC, staff were fantastic and friendly apart from that and kept the gym clean. Gym is spread across many levels. The first workout is reaching the changing rooms on the 5th floor. 2 squat racks and 1 platform, plus bars to deadlift in the functional fitness space. They should probably replace some of the machines with more free weights, benches and racks, as these areas seem to be busier. Annoying compliant is that the lights above some of the bench press area are very bright, it would irritate my eyes during the lift.

January 15, 2018 13:56

Not enough weight machines. Always have to wait for my seated rows and lat pulldowns.

November 1, 2017 23:50

Decent gym experience. Despite some of the equipment being 'out of order' for what seems like months, on the whole it's a standard gym and probably worth the price you pay.

What is terrible is the customer service. I tried to cancel my membership as was moving away from the area. The staff told me that they had done it and I would receive a confirmation email shortly. Never received it so followed up and they again told me it was done. I repeatedly called the general manager (Catherine Dulman) to confirm but she never responded to any of my calls or emails. I left a message with the front office for her but she still did not respond. I have now just been charged a full next months membership when I notified them weeks away that I want to cancel! Absolutely terrible service with complete disregard for other people.

October 18, 2017 10:57

Most of the staff are very nice. Unfortunately they need to clean the place more thoroughly and consistently. There are many gyms around and if you want to compete, you got to stay on top of your game. Classes are ok. I joined because of location.

My regular day for going there is Sunday afternoon and true to form it is a decent place to do a 2-hour workout.

My one major complaint is the excessive noise coming in the form of so-called music.

Nearly 90 to 95% of the folks who work out, at least when I am there, wear their own headphones, myself included.

And yet the music blasts, screams at you, through even noise cancelling headphones.

Ask one of the folks who work there( as I have often done) to please turn down or turn off the unforgiving sounds coming from the speakers in the ceiling,... and all you get is a shrug with him or her saying "we can't control it".

I wonder who the music is really playing for?

Since, again, most people who work out wear their own headphones and by doing that, are clear in that they wish to have their own music.

This would be a five-star place if they just didn't have any music.

I've been an avid gym goer for 14+ years and I have to say I'm completely disgusted with the customer service, lack of courteousness, follow-through, and it's sad because it's mostly coming from the lack of leadership, top down. While the front desk staff had tried to be helpful and try to accommodate and reach out to the Sales Manager Joel Patrick multiple times via phone call, text, notes, emails, and the like, for over a week since I tried to communicate with him both in person and over the phone, he failed to reach out with so much as a courteous phone call. He also had the audacity to try to be a coward and pass the buck to his own General Manager (I think her name was Kathy), who seemed to have no clue how to do it or what to do with my attempt at transferring my passport membership to their local gym instead. And on top of that, he had the nerve to come out his office when he sensed trouble (to perhaps try to defend himself and lack of professionalism) with a smirk and try to make it into a joke. Needless to say, I ultimately decided to keep my business elsewhere with my second gym membership I've had for years and just cancel my membership altogether!

They really need to train their managers on basic customer service skills and professionalism. I am a nurse and am usually calm, emphathetic, easygoing, and understanding, but they really are a total let down here at NYSC. I've been to others, but this is BY FAR the worst experience and gym I've been to. Hence, why I NEVER take the time to write reviews but I had to with this one! Pay attention to the reviews Googlers because I sure didn't before signing up!

Moved to the area recently and have been working out at NYSC Ave A ever since.
What I like:
- they offer free towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair dryers etc. so whenever I forget something I don't need to worry
- the place is usually clean and tidy
What I don't like:
- the gym has 4 floors and I don't like the distribution of the gym equipment at all, it's just not practical
- during peak hours the gym is so crowded that doing the workout you want to do is almost impossible
- the treadmills/stair master are sometimes full of sweat...

But to sum it up: I go there almost every day and it's close to my home. I can deal with all the things I don't really like so I rate 4 out of 5 stars.

Update:
After three months there I have a slightly different view about this particular NYSC. Some things have been broken since the time I registered and one of the four showers in the ladies room has been broken for more than 4 weeks now. The water fountain has been broken for over 2 weeks now!!
Early october: the water fountain on the third floor is now completely broken. One leg machine is out of order.

October 18, 2017 10:57

The club itself is fine, but trying to cancel your membership is insanely difficult. They make you come into the club when the manager is there, which is only during 9-5 on weekdays (i.e. when no one can go to the gym because you are at work) and you cannot do it over the phone / email. This policy is nuts in 2017 and sours the whole franchise.
