Firstly, my impressions of the facilities.
Not the worst, equipment-wise, but the gym was not well taken care of (this is coming from someone who has worked in gyms before). Rather dirty, cleaning supplies on the floor for members often low or not stocked, and I once went in every morning for a week when there was neither toilet paper nor soap in the men's bathroom.
The gym is often not staffed during posted staffed hours. This isn't only from my own experience but from the testimony of other members as well. One time that I want in to speak with the owner (during posted staffed hours), I had to wait about an hour and 45 minutes for him to show up, while two other people who had separate appointments with the owner were waiting as well. Those other two (again, two other separate appointments) both left after waiting about an hour.
Now secondly, the business aspect.
My wife and I believe we were misled when we signed up in January. I specifically asked about the cancellation policy and was told I could cancel any time, as long as I gave 30-days notice. The owner later protested to saying that, but that is what my wife and I both remember, and the chances of us both misremembering the exact same thing is very low.
Then my wife went in to cancel her membership in May. The owner said she would be canceled no problem, and he even accepted her key fob. Then when we went in to cancel my membership in June, the owner told us that neither of us could cancel and we were locked in for the rest of the year (his affect was very different from the previous interactions we had had with him).
After doing some research, I found that our contract does not comply with Iowa state law. If you decide to check out this gym, make sure you are also aware of Chapter 552 - PHYSICAL EXERCISE CLUBS - Iowa Code 2018. Our contract conflicted with that law on multiple points, and when I pointed this out to the owner, he said, "It's not illegal," and then basically ignored it. I have complained to the Iowa Attorney General (as I have been reluctant to take my own private legal action) whose multiple attempts to communicate with this gym have gone ignored. In fact, although the owner of this Anytime Fitness had communicated with me via email prior to my attempt to cancel, he has refused to communicate with me directly since then.
Much has happened in the past five months, including me blocking the billing company from charging my bank account, as well as the Anytime Fitness owner and ABC Financial largely ignoring my attempts at communication. (And note that I have been quite calm and polite through this whole situation, even if the Anytime Fitness owner doesn't like that I'm trying multiple avenues to cancel my membership.)
On November 5, I received an email from ABC Financial stating that per the Anytime Fitness club, if I returned my key fobs to the gym within 30 days, then they would cancel my account and remove all past due balance. Now, I had actually already turned in my key fobs in July, and an ABC employee acknowledged that fact in July. My repeated attempts to communicate this fact to ABC Financial, the Anytime Fitness owner, and a representative of the corporate office - including forwarding the July acknowledgment of me turning in my key fobs - went ignored.
Today, Nov 30 (less than 30 days after Nov 5!), I received an email from ABC Financial stating that my account has been turned over to collections.
So let's get this straight: my contract is in violation of Iowa law, I completed the one requirement they asked of me in order to cancel my membership, and it hasn't even been the full 30 days, and they still turned my account over to collections. This proves that this offer to cancel my membership was not offered in good faith.
It is difficult to imagine a worse gym to do business with in this town. I highly recommend you go... anywhere else... for a gym membership. And I don't say this out of any ill will towards the gym itself; I feel I must leave this review for the sake of people looking for a gym in this town.
