The Athletic Club at 105th and Barkley has two persistent problems:
1) I joined this club mainly because the pool offered many hours of lap swimming. But often when I go there to swim, I find that all the lanes are being used for swimming lessons or for another group purpose.
This is nothing new, but the big problem is that the no-lap-swim hours are not published. A sheet of paper outside the men's locker room lists some of the hours when individual members cannot use the pool--emphasis on "some." (I assume there's a similar list outside the women's locker room.).
Three times during the past two weeks, I could not swim because of this information deficit. I have not found the pool schedule on the website. When I've called, the people answering the phone have lacked information. Some staff have ignored or dismissed phone, e-mail and in-person requests for clarification; one person has sighed and glared at me. for asking.
Over the years I've belonged to 14 facilities in 10 metro areas and have never seen such an easy-to-solve problem be ignored.
2) The new owners have touted the remodeling that will take place between February 15 and February 26. I hope they remember to clean the tile in the men's shower stalls, the men's hot tub, and the pool's hot tub. In these places, the tile grout has brown smears. Cleaning the grout takes more work than simply waving a rag at the dirt.
Just had my first opportunity to go back to the updated gym. I had the pleasure of trying out the Combo 6 with Brett Boston. It was AWESOME! The gym itself is great, but the classes and the trainers there are incredible. Whether you are looking for a place to start or if you're already well into your fitness journey and want to switch it up to challenge yourself, you need to try out Combo 6 with Brett! The Athletic Club is a nice gym with some convenient amenities, but the customer service is pretty terrible. They are not helpful or customer oriented and are clearly only interested in taking your money.
They would be smart to switch their strategy to focus on helping their customers reach their health/wellness goals rather than just making money. That would be more effective to keep people coming back.
Great place tucked away that you'll never find unless you are certainly looking for It. Some of the nicest staff you'll find anywhere in the area. Great equipment and facility, plenty of parking and easy access. Well maintained during recent snow storms also.
If you are a swimmer, steer clear. During the most popular times there are frequently scheduled "events" or classes taking up the entire pool. Even if you carefully schedule your swim time to make sure it doesn't conflict with the posted schedule, some rude older woman named Ann will come sit fully clothed and stare at you through half of your swim and then interrupt and try to kick you out because you are in her "preferred lane" and she needs to teach a "class" that isn't listed or mentioned anywhere by the actual gym staff.
They also switched management recently and all of a sudden I started getting multiple random $30-$50 charges on my card from them. When I called, they claimed it was for previous child care and the system was "just catching up" but did not provide a statement of any sort.
It's a nice gym, but it doesn't differentiate that much from all the others although it does have a sauna and a steam in both genders locker room. There is a nice pool outside, but the inside pool is a bit small. The basketball court is nice but I wouldn't say it's good and the same goes with the actual fitness area.
I've been coming as a guest for the last week. This gym is horribly dirty, the machines have not been cleaned well at all both by th staff and I have never in my life been to a gym where NONE of it's members clean sweat off the machines after using you members should be ashamed of yourselves !!. I'll stick to my planet fitness, they are actually clean. There was a mustard packet in the cup holder of a bike the entire week I went. Meaning nobody cleaned! Trash !! Also the TV stations have no variety, this place is just about as plain vanilla as it's patrons. 0/10 would not recommend.
Am losing weight and the muscle is coming back and the staff is very encouraging...you go PLF
The crowds are OK. The staff is really nice. The equipment is very old and in kilos not pounds. The price is far more than what I'd expect with this old equipment.

Prairie Life is a great gym but for as much as I pay in dues, they need to use some of that money and reinvest it into fixing up the facility. It's a little long in the tooth and at the very least needs some overhead fans for air flow.

It's great to not have to wait half a hour for each machine! Glad to have a comfortable place to get in shape.

Pay for a membership here for several years and they will gladly tell you to get out of the lap pool for a class or get off the basketball course for a class. Guess they make more money that way even though they could easily design classes to allow other members to still use those areas. The whole place is in constant disrepair and hey how about fill out our membership survey so we can pay attention to nothing you point out or suggest. Done trying to help them make improvements and switching clubs.

One of the biggest issue with this place is that the amenities they offer (pool, studio, basketball court) are consistently occupied by workout classes. If classes are your thing then this gym will suit you fine, for the rest of us it's frustrating needing to learn the the schedules of multiple facilities just so you can use them.

I love this gym. Great place to work out. Play basketball go swimming. Steam room hot tub. A vvariety of thing. The people working there aren't the beat.
Like a second home. Staff friendly and attentive and clean facilities. Great aquatic center.

Salespersons doing intake will direct you immediately to a two year contract even though they offer month to month and one year. In some countries in Europe fair trade laws prohibit 2 year gym contracts due to their predatory nature.
I was told verbally while signing up that cancelling if need be was 'easy' and things were 'basically month to month.' I utilized the gym 2-3 times and found it to be musty, disorganized in its layout of machines, and depressing. I spent more time in hotel gyms on the road with work and wasn't motivated to return.
Upon moving 50 blocks north I requested to cancel since use of the gym would then become completely impractical. I was advised that I'd have to pay until the end of the oncoming month and an additional "Cancellation fee" of $170. I was then advised I had been locked into a two year contract. My requests that they waive the cancellation fee and simply enjoy the fact I paid them $500 for under four gym visits. This request was denied after being escalated.
TLDR; Facility sucks, staff sucks, they will take your money unethically.
Great atmosphere for workouts alone or with the family. Clean and friendly.

I just moved to the area and was looking for a gym nearby. This place is ALWAYS crowded. So if you like the be the center of attention with all eyes on you while you work out and get all sweaty and gross, this is your place. Otherwise, steer clear..

Easy check in. 10 free guest passes are given at the beginning of your membership. Personal trainers are always on the edge of their seat ready to help. I am completely satisfied!
Lovely place. They allowed my friend who was visiting out of town and I to take a Zumba class. Very fun! Very nice people.
It would probably not be considered "state of the art" but it is clean, has every piece if equipment I need and I swim, run, and lift weights. It also has amenities like a sauna, steam room and hot tub in the girls locker room, massages and a health snack bar available. The place is very open and the equipment is good, maybe not brand new top of the line but above average. I got a deal around $50 a month and I think it's the best you can get for that value. I also enjoy how it's open late.
