Let me begin by stating that this is NOT a review of the facility itself, but of one staff member in particular. The facility is top-notch and has an excellent selection of equipment and amenities. For the most part, the staff is also quite excellent, and this is the first bad experience I have had in four months of attending this gym.
This review pertains to a member of the personal training staff named Liz. My girlfriend and I were concluding our workout today with some cardio and this trainer approached us with some unsolicited and quite frankly rudely delivered advice suggesting that what my girlfriend was doing was an ineffective way to exercise. My girlfriend only began working out a few months ago, and has been giving it her all on a daily basis, so needless to say hearing something like this coming out of nowhere is very defeating and it really upset her. I myself am an NSCA certified personal trainer, and I understand that trainers for the most part do their best to make good, wholesome suggestions to their clients when necessary for the benefit of the person's health. Neither of us however are Liz's clients, nor have we ever interacted with her, and there is absolutely a right and wrong way to deliver information like this. It would be one thing if one of us had asked her, but to be approached and interrupted during a workout is completely unacceptable. The manner in which the 'advice' was delivered was also unnecessary. The tone in which the trainer spoke to us was both passive aggressive and condescending, almost as if to suggest we should have been going out of our way to seek her advice and would be foolish not to listen to her.
Again, if we were looking for a trainer or had hired her, or if one of us had been in danger of injury, this would have come across a completely different way. This kind of thing creates a very bad look for a trainer as an individual, and calls in to question whether some of the staff are genuinely trying to be helpful or are attempting to recruit new clients via unsolicited interactions with people who are just trying to do their best and are perfectly happy with themselves the way they are.
