As a response to one of the earlier posts,
1. You can't really expect the mats to be spotless with people exercising on top of them.
2. Taking off your shoes and socks is polite, and not doing so has a chance to cause injury to the other students.
3. If you were able to keep your shoes on, the mats would get even dirtier
4. Sparring is an important part of martial arts, and allows students to test the practicality of the lessons that they've learned. The fee is for equipment made to protect the students.
