The only good things about this gym are that the setting is good and it's close to my house. Yes, I am a regular member, but it's only because PG is the only option for gyms around here for me.
The staff do not create a very welcoming environment, and as a result, compared other gyms around the country, there is little community feel. PG as a whole, is the only gym that I have frequented where the staff do not regularly greet people as they walk through the door. In addition, there is no established precedent of staff walking around to ensure safety, and I cannot tell you the number of times I see people beginning to boulder when someone else is already on that same area. Or a crowd of people will stand 5 feet away from the wall without noticing someone is bouldering right there.
How does this translate in the bigger picture? Planet Granite essentially puts the responsibility for creating a safe environment on the members, many of which are very new to climbing and may be unaware of the risks despite the 5 minute safety video. As a community sport, it is important for everyone to educate others, however, the establishment does not do much to support this. As a result, you, the individual, look like a dick when trying to tell people, "Hey let's back up so we don't get hurt, etc..." vs. safety awareness is an expectation for everyone or, "Oh, this is a teaching moment for me (the person who is receiving this feedback)."
Planet Granite also does not have basic amenities that are standard to other climbing gyms. These include air conditioning, heating, and free wifi (Come on! It's Silicon Valley!). What does this mean? The Bay Area actually has one of the poorest air quality regions in the country, and when days are orange or red (which occur throughout the year), there is no air filtration system in place to improve air quality inside. One particular example is from the wildfires in Oct 2017, where the air quality was so poor that the AQI was 190+ due to the PM2.5. The inside of the gym was smoky and I just stopped going to the gym that entire week, because it was no respite from the air. The doors were all closed, but those walls/doors are not well sealed. What is a PG gym membership for, if I can't use it to work out/climb when the conditions outdoors are bad?
Finally, this place is insanely overcrowded. PG needs to expand.
So ~$100 for an individual or ~$170 for a family of two is pretty ridiculous regarding the conditions.
Planet Granite, if you are reading this, I urge you to take this to heart.
