I live in Fresno, CA, where we used to have a Gold's Gym.
The Visit
In a recent visit to Southern California (9/2017), I knew that I had a couple of hours between meetings to do a workout. I remembered that the North Hollywood Gold's was nearby and I phoned a few days in advance to ask about their daily rate. Anahit Attoyan answered (didn't know that she was the General Manager), told me the rate and said that I would be there in a few days.
When I arrived, I spoke to one of the team members about my call and was ready with money in-hand to pay for my day. Of course, you have to sign up, even though I don't live in the area. As I was filling out my info, Anahit came up to me and introduced herself to me, totally remembering our conversation! Out of her generosity, she treated me to a day at the gym.
The Gym
It is a totally old-school place: Metal plates, metal dumbbells and lots of people, both big and small, both toned and "working on it", in all colors, ages, shapes and sizes.
I belong to a regional "corporate" gym in Fresno that offers cheap membership. I've discovered that the members getting the cheap monthly, bring with them an "entitled" element: Leaving weights strewn throughout the gym, not racking weights, leaving their garbage (emptied water/drink bottles, paper towels, wrappers, etc.) and pretty much showing a lack of courtesy to the gym and other members. My experience at Gold's North Hollywood reminded me that a busy gym can look clean and somewhat orderly (I complimented the Maintenance Manager). And ... it felt like home.
The Workout
I'm not shy. I do get a rigorous workout in, but during the rest periods, I like to chat. The members, I believe, set the culture of a gym. On this first visit, I probably met, at least, eight people, either by asking to share equipment (I was never denied), racking weights (I believe in an orderly place) or just walking up to people to compliment their routine or to ask how or why they do a particular move (every person showed much hospitality). For me, I benefit the most from fitness when I can engage in dialog and learn from someone else. This gym has a good clientele who, for the most part, have excellent gym manners.
OVERALL
I have returned to this gym a few more times in 2017 (twice in December). There are several things that impressed me about Gold's North Hollywood:
-It's a simple, yet very functional place for fitness. In addition to weights, it has a large variety of cardio equipment.
-The Gym Members. All I can say is "wow". I am impressed with the people here, as they actually do remember visitors. In my return visits, it amazed me how many either remembered my name or my face. It felt good to be there. And I got awesome workouts there, too! (BTW ... You will workout next to actors, directors, adult entertainment, wanna be entertainers, star bodybuilders, and common folk. Everyone behaves on the same level ... it's called gym etiquette)
-The Gold's Gym North Hollywood Management Team: They've always welcomed me back. And with each visit, either Anahit or one of her team members greeted me like an old friend.
I miss my Gold's Gym in Fresno ... we had the same culture, where people got their workouts done, but we also had created a family.
If you live near the Gold's Gym North Hollywood and are looking for a fitness home and a supportive gym community, stop by for a visit, meet the team, get your workout on, learn from the members, then this is your place!
