I taught at Atma Bodha Yoga Studio for several years. My loyalty was certainly NOT appreciated. Avery Jones and his mother psychologically and emotionally tormented me. He had his other teachers treat me in a similar manner. While Avery does possess a vast book knowledge of Yoga, he misses the entire point of the journey of self discovery through Yoga. The Self is discovered in your darkest moments, not by paying a monthly fee at a fancy Yoga studio. STAY AWAY.

Simply put, Atma Bodha has been a gift in my life! Welcoming, peaceful, non-intimidating, calming, strengthening and more. I am by nature a "high energy" individual and Atma Boda taught me how to add peace and balance to my life, "in the moment". I love the meditation and chanting (yes you will learn a new language, how cool!) and with accompanying instruments such as bowls, chimes and even a Ukele! The instructors are all awesome in their own gifted way. Thank you Nellie for your wonderful voice and musical talent! Lisi you're inspiration is over the top and Shane, well your sense of humor makes your class ever so fun! I thank you all, especially AJ for helping me in my journey of life!
All you readers please come and visit Atma Boda. I promise you will have a healthier, happier body, mind and spirit!
Peace and Blessings to you all
Namaste
I was in the area for work and found Atma Bodha Yoga in a google search. I am so glad I opted to visit this space. Amazing energy in the space and the sense of community was strong yet I felt very welcome as a visitor. I will totally practice there again next time I am in town.
One of the most mindful studios I have ever visited. No mirrors, no judgment, just peace. It was so nice that as a beginner I felt very welcome. The lack of mirrors in the studio let you focus on your own progress and cultivating your own form. I will keep coming back to see AJ!
I tried yoga first time about 9 month ago and I am so happy I got my first experience at Atma Bodha. They are so welcoming and encouraging. They have classes for all levels of students. Very professional approach, highly recommended:)
This is not corporate slick canned yoga. This is a studio that the owner actually teaches most of the classes. A studio where people talk about their dogs or their gardens. A studio that no one cares what you wear.
The owner has some dogs and they came to class - which is all for the good. One of the dogs even joins in the pre-practice chanting. (A sight not to be missed.) There is a variety of classes and all levels are accommodated.
It is hard to imagine a place where one would feel less judged or more at leisure to explore your own practice.
I have practiced at a few studios in the area and found this place through Groupon. This isn't as much as a rating but as a heads up review. I asked what to expect my first class. The gentleman said the do a little chanting. That was an understatement. There was a lot. With no explanation. My first time it was okay because the crowd was huge. It was a weekend and easily 20 people there. So my refusal to chant didn't stand out. But a few days later on Tuesday night the instructor stood over me with only three people in the room. It's not my practice to chant. A personal preference - no mirrors. This is what I use to check myself. However, I get how this can be a plus for many. There was loud talking allowed in the room before class started. Again, maybe personal preference. And one of the last reviews - they get you up from final shivasina to . . . CHANT. The people there seemed totally comfortable and happy. So maybe it's just me. But I did not even finish the duration of my groupon. This place was just not the welcoming home for me.
This place has been my best experience with a guided yoga practice. Friendly instructors, laid back environment and the most amazing work out.
I think Atma Bodha Yoga Studio in Virginia Beach is a really nice place to practice yoga. You know how you're not always sure how you're supposed to behave in yoga class? If you're like me, you wonder, "Am I aloud to laugh?" or, more often maybe "...ummmm...I have no idea what we're doing...can I ask the teacher a question?" Or maybe you want to exclaim, "Oh my GOSH this is HARD!!!" Here's one of the things I REALLY LIKE about Atma Bodha...YOU'RE aloud to TALK...and LAUGH! It's not like there's a running dialogue going on through class...but if the need arises, you CAN talk.
Though I've been practicing yoga for a while, you'd never know it from the way I look in class. I love it that there's no feeling of judgment from the instructors or from the the other students. The instructors are very skilled at leading their students through an appropriately challenging practice. They've got classes that are appropriate for beginners and for those that are more experienced too.
In some of the classes there's singing/chanting and some meditation. There's zero pressure to participate in anything you're uncomfortable with.
Atma is AMAZING! I have had such a wonderful experience here. Everyone is very friendly, and they have been super helpful with me just beginning yoga. Everyone should go here!
