I'm disappointed in how they handled/are handling the COVID19 situation. I understand that they are a small local business but I'm offended they want members to pay $40 for a fitness class that should be free to anyone still paying dues. The fitness class is no different then what they offer for members during normal operation (which is free with a membership). There are other ways to earn money during this time. Why not do a raffle for free memberships and gear? Do unique webinar classes or events? Just put a little thought into it.

I could spend my whole day here, and it'd be a perfect day. Start with a high quality work out (spin, boot camp etc) or yoga class, sit in the sauna, then grab a healthy smoothie, AWESOME burrito, or coffee at the cafe. Climb/boulder whatever- or just chill on the trendy patio with live music from local bands, local beers, and good food.

Also, pick up your CSA shares from local farmers here in the summer.

And maybe take a lead class in the evening, then shop their retail area.( I think I want all of the clothes they currently have on display BTW)

What I'm getting at is that this gym is so much more than a climbing gym. They are very interconnected to the community, supporting locally, and doing good. This is a local business supporting locally through and through. Everyone of the staff members I've met has been happy, welcoming, kind, and helpful.

Yeah, it's a little busy in the evenings and parking is tough, but that's because this place is gold, and Salt Lake is growing by the second. Seriously can't wait for this place to open again, and can't wait to check out the new Murray location

I've been coming to the front for about 3 years now, and I've really enjoyed it. I've seen them grow in the programs and amenities they offer, and the climbing routes get switched enough to keep things interesting. I would like to give this place 5 stars - it's one of my favorite spots in SLC - but there are no cracks to climb, and parking is HORRIBLE. I'm excited to see what the new gym they are opening in Mill Creek will offer in these regards!

One of the best climbing gym's in the US. This is a world-class facility with excellent lead, top rope, bouldering and training areas. The route setting is excellent and the facility is top notch. Excited to see the new Millcreek location when it opens too.

Best climbing gym in Utah! The atmosphere here is an interesting mix between zen and fun. I've only had positive experiences here and tell all my friends about it.

As for the climbing they have really fun routes that are changed just often enough for you to get used to them and master them before they're changed to something new.

I've been to a few yoga classes, their coffee shop, the sauna and their gym floor which are also great additions.

Great place to climb for an extended day visit. Hammocks outside, enough room to throw a frisbee :) Cafe on the third floor had good coffee. Climbs are challenging routes but easier routes are available in both top roping and bouldering.

This place is pretty great. Had my member ship for about 2 months now. They have plenty of things to do between climbing, gym amenities, cafe and outdoor area.

If you read enough of people reviews some are valid and some are stupid as hell and people just want to complain. The soft water and fancy soaps are dope. The day pass prices are a bit outrageous. The cafe is simple and hipster based but hey, everyone likes burritos and beer. Yoga area is super cool. Teachers are knowledgeable and attentive. Yes, it may smell like feet. Duh. I wish the gym floor had more stuff but that's not this places main focus. The common area is definitely different. Never seen a gym with a hang out spot but I rather like it. It's nice place to kill time when sore or waiting. The band's and vendors don't bother me. Sometimes they're cool.
Don't like when it's packed at peak times? God forbid most of the population works a 9 - 5 like you. All the 5.8 are full? Be Patient OR Learn harder routes, lead climb OR GO EARLIER.

This place is sweet. Try it out. Form your own opinion. I'll definitely be here as long as I can.

I went and toured the facility a few weeks ago. Their staff, Meg, showed me around and was most helpful about what The Front has to offer. They not only have a climbing gym, but also the means to train (both with mentoring and equipment). The Front has a place to work out, a spot for the kiddos to climb safely, a place to chill with a drink (either coffee or something stronger), and a place for the doggos to run around with their friends. If I lived in the Salt Lake area, I definitely would have signed up for a membership.

I started my climbing journey using 2 buddy passes at Momentum. After getting hooked and hearing my buddies were going to switch to The Front, I decided to get a membership here instead earlier in January. When it comes to any monthly financial commitment, I always thoroughly scope things out and research before committing. For the first time, I didn't do it for The Front and I haven't regretted it since. The prices may seem on the higher end, especially if you are on a single member pass, but it's well worth it. The staff is great, chill atmosphere, fun community, great music (varies depending on whose working, lol), and other benefits that come with your membership - free yoga, discount at the store that's in the gym, live music, and other events that are free for members.

I only boulder, and the staff is great at coming up with routes both challenging and creative. They also change them about a month or so at a time, which is awesome and keeps things fresh. The weight room on the second floor is excellent with a great variety of free weights and cardio machines (they even have ergs, aka rowing machines, which I love). The staff is also good at addressing issues as quickly as they can which is amazing, because who doesn't hate it when something isn't working? Sometimes, the restrooms can be a little gross due to high volume of people, but it's taken cared of by the next day, which is great. I personally hate it that people go around barefoot sometimes, especially in the weight room or restrooms, but it's the climbing gym, what can you expect. Overall, I'd say best climbing gym in the city, if not the entire state of UT!

Chill atmosphere, good music, and challenging routes! Love coming here. This place has some of the most diverse and creative indoor routes. The updates and expansions make me want to live here (still working on it...) Good work fellas.

I love The Front,!!! The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. I boulder and take advantage of their yoga classes, the yoga teachers are amazing, I feel you get so much bang for your buck at The Front. Also the Cafe on the 3rd floor is ah-mazing!

Been going here for over 5 years and love it. Huge variety of equipment and walls. Routes are always changing somewhere in the gym. The cafe is awesome. They have steam rooms too. Super nice place, love it.

Gym itself is very nice for climbing. Great yoga program. Good people working there but approach to service is lousy - lots of little rules (many of which are silly) and attitude that it's gospel. Sticky membership policies if you try to cancel/freeze. Gets crazy busy ~6/7 on weeknights. Space is poorly maintained, for example the locker rooms went weeks without soap before they replaced broken dispensers and not so much as a sign from management. The vibe at Momentum is much more common sense and not so rigid, and the gyms are comparable - I switched.

April 27, 2018 08:35

The climbing is good, weight room is good and the staff is friendly.

Complaints:

Turn down (or preferably turn off) the music in the weight room! Everybody has headphones, and nobody wants to hear your Cypress Hill/Blink 182 mix while they are trying to workout!

They require you to pass a belay test to top rope or lead (fine, lots of gyms do that), BUT they charge you for it!! As an additional charge beyond admission. Not for you to take a class...just for you to show them what you already know...not for them to teach anything...just for you to be able to rope climb while you are there regardless of how many years of experience you may have. Beyond ridiculous. I've been to many gyms all over the country, and I've never before been charged for a belay test. Welcome to the Frontier Airlines of climbing gyms folks...next they will have a coin operated water fountain and coin operated cubbies and a token slot to get into a bathroom stall to pee. Way to nickel and dime your patrons...was it worth collecting the extra few dollars knowing that you really sullied the overall impression that you made?

The walls you can't friction climb on. There is a really cool vertical treadmill but it seems old. But still is perfect for practice endurance on. But it is an amazing gym. You can easily access it by bus. It has a stupid rule if you need to be 14 or older to belay top rope and lead! And you need to be 16 for the auto belay device!

Great climbing gym with a variety of different equipment for weight training too! Yoga classes are a must, with very knowledgeable instructors. Only negative is that the price is a little bit more than it needs to be, but the facility and knowledgeable staff both make it well worth the cost of getting a membership.

Great facility!! Been climbing here for years. Very chill, relaxing environment. They have a little bit of everything here. Bouldering, Top Roping, lead climbing, and gym. I would recommend checking it out.

I have been a member for a couple months and have been very impressed with this gym. The members are extremely friendly and helpful. The staff is amazing and are always willing to teach and talk to you. The yoga classes have been great and they have a huge selection. The only down side is how crowded they are at peak times and how difficult it can be to climb at these times. I would recommend avoiding the busy times and get in there early or late. I can't wait fore the beer garden :D.

Its a very unique gym built upon wooden walls. It also has multiple levels (including a couple of large training areas). There is the new section and old section for bouldering and lots of different gradings. The old bouldering has patio plastic chairs as seating areas. Theres so much to explore and do here. I believe it is also meant for adaptive climbing which is a big up in my books. There is also a shop inside the gym by the entrance.

As of late it has been WAY too crowded for someone like me that works normal hours. Their facilities are nice but as of this writing really difficult to use consistently. The parking is another nightmare. It's fine to ride my bike in the summer with longer days but riding in the winter evenings to this location can be dangerous. If you drive there after 5pm you can expect a 1/4 mile walk to the gym if you aren't parking illegally.

Nice gym. Also very expensive for a day pass! Tons of bouldering space. Nice and clean. Friendly staff. Huge walls. Most of the boulder area is really challenging. They just need a few more easy problems for when you are tired and want to still bolder. There is workout equipment too.

Thy also have the highest day pass rate I have seen anywhere (including Chicago, Los Angles, and Denver.) Almost as much as a month at some less expensive gyms.

Edit June 2017:

This place is not adequately staffed during busy times. Estimates wait for a top rope belay check was 15 minutes. Also at $22.50 for a day pass it is by far the most expensive rock gym I have been to. There is no lower bouldering only price. There are no auto belays so if you go by yourself you are paying 22.50 to boulder.

I love this gym! I got a membership here because of the amenities: sauna, few unlimited yoga, 10% back on purchases, cardio and full weights area, climbing treadmill, food truck nights, movie nights, and a great atmosphere.
There's enough wall space to top rope even on the busiest days.
Lead climbing is recommended as they have dedicated wall space, but be warned: starting November 25 2017 they require assisted belay decides on all lead climbs. Obviously it's for safety reasons so I can't complain.
Bouldering is typically very popular and you'll need to wait a bit to climb during busy times, but you'll get your chance.

Great climbing gym and health club, great community. Tons of bouldering in the old building and on the new side, huge top rope and lead walls as well as the gym and training areas in the new building. Since the new construction is well, still pretty new, the place has been constantly evolving since I joined in late 2016, with the new yoga studios on the 3rd floor having opened and the new kids/teaching walls also on the 3rd floor now available. Just last week on the Summer Solstice the central outdoor "park" area was opened with benches and tables to sit and relax. I've found the staff and the community to be very friendly and the vibe is great, though I will say that as others have mentioned the place can be a little intimidating at first or for the novice. Partly because it's so big and probably partly because the level of the climbers is so high. It's truly a world class climbing gym, and I love that, but at first can cause some serious "gymtimidation". My recommendation if you're just starting out and you've joined is to take the Bouldering 101 class, it's a great intro to technique and a good all around orientation. Finally the kids programs and Summer camps are great... my son has been in the after school program before and taken 3 different Summer camp sessions the past 2 Summers, he's loved them and he really likes his instructors. With the new 3rd floor area open this year they really have a nice spot for the kids now.

We love coming to this gym!! Beautiful facility. Love the climbing and the yoga classes. Never too crowded to climb. The staff are amazing. The staff and the other gym members have been so sweet and encouraging towards our kids who are learning to climb. Our son is taking private climbing lessons with Douglas Hunter who is an awesome coach and mentor! We highly recommend him. His lessons are very reasonably priced and definitely worth it. We love that we can come spend family time together and get a great workout in at the same time.

I tried climbing gyms about 10-15 years ago... WOW, things have changed for the better. What a difference! This place is amazing. It's not the great outdoors, but I actually look forward to going here every chance I get. I can't get enough. And all of the extras make a big difference. It's fun and you can get a great workout while you're there too. Thanks, to the amazing staff. This place has made my transition back into climbing a fun experience.
