I began training at this school in 2008, and it jumpstarted my current love of the martial arts. When I first visited the school, the traditional Chinese interior and obvious care for the equipment caught my eye. However, it was my meeting with Sifu Travis Alschbach that made it clear how different this school was from others in the area.
If you are interested in learning martial arts for any reason -- health, self-defense, strength gaining, philosophy, etc -- then this is the school for you. All aspects of Kung Fu are taught (and taught well), including basic movements, forms, joint locking, grappling, weaponry, and hand-to-hand sparring/fighting. Basic Chinese history and philosophy is also a key element of instruction, and one's understanding of such is tested thoroughly in order to reach the advanced levels. Advancing is also up to the student; while students are encouraged to test their limits, they are never forced.
I have since moved away and train in martial arts elsewhere. However, I make it a point to return to this school every time I come back to Texas. The quality of instruction and welcoming staff make learning at SWYI a joy.
