I had the opportunity to train at the Austin Kickboxing Academy for six months while visiting Austin for work. Randy and Tessa have set up a wonderful world class gym. All of the coaches are very experienced and are great instructors. The atmosphere at the gym is very friendly and whether you are looking to compete or train to get into or stay in shape, I highly recommend the gym. Additionally, they often run seminars from world renowned Muay Thai competitors and coaches. While I was there, I was able to to benefit from attending a seminar instructed by Jongsanan Woodenman. Finally, during my time in Austin, I experienced the transition and expansion from the old gym to their fantastic new space. I hope to be able to come back to Austin soon to train.
Signing up at AKA is the best decision I've made since moving down to Austin. This place is truly for everyone - whether you're looking to lose some weight, get serious with fighting, or even just want to build camaraderie with some cool people, this is your gym. Be open-minded, leave your ego at the door, and you'll have a great time here. Can't recommend this place enough.
Had a great experience training here for the day. Everybody on the team was greatly experienced and very friendly. And the new location is massive with a ton of different cross training opportunities.
I have been training for over ten years now, and have moved around a lot, so I have been in a few gyms. If you don't already know, no gym is the same. With that being said Austin Kickboxing Academy is one of the best out there. From the moment I walked in I was welcomed by the front desk. Toured the gym, met the coaches with the same warm welcome. They set classes accordingly with beginner, intermediate, and advanced sections so nobody is getting left out or left behind. Class is set with a warm up, technique work and then exercise. So you get a proper warm up, learn something and get your exercise. Doesn't matter if you are looking for just fitness or interested in learning to fight, you will stay learning and getting in the best shape ever. If you haven't checked them out, you are missing out. The people there are a great everyone helps everyone type community, giving a family vibe, you will not be disappointed. I love these people and was sad to move away. 3yrs was not enough.
Be extremely careful when choosing to sign up at this facility. The pricing for membership is quite expensive. 179.99 for month to month. Not INCLUDING TAX. They will tax you on membership. Anyways, my biggest complaint is the lack of teaching during the actual classes. It felt more like the instructors wanted to show you how impressive they were. One Example: the instructor shows up, tells you to run and stands in the back chatting with other coaches while sipping his smoothie. (Yes this really happened and often happens.) 4 months in and i kindly asked them to terminate my membership. Which they will not. I was driving 18 miles to your facility because i was really hoping that my 119.00 membership was worth it. It was not. Anyways, this has been my experience at A.K.A.
They hosted a nice charity seminar today to help a local martial artist raise money for cancer treatment. Great people!
This place is top notch for Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and Boxing training. The coaches really work closely with you to make sure that you are developing your technique every step of the way. They stay late, come early, and are always there to help you if you ask for it. Each class has plenty of coaches there to help you, so you never feel like you are left to your own devices. There are students with all levels of experience to help you grow and encourage you along the way. Just come prepared to give it your all and you can take it as far as you want.
I've been going to AKA now for 3 years and it is hands down the best place to train in Austin. Not only is the staff there supportive, attentive and honest, but so are most of the other members. It is has open doors for all people that are wanting to learn and they don't tolerate any inappropriate aggression or behavior. In a nutshell, it is a welcoming and safe environment that focuses on technique and family values.
Austin Kickboxing Academy is run by a great group of people that are very passionate about what they do. The classes are structured to progressively build on eachother by sharpening technique and reinforcing fundamentals.
Randy and Tessa are world class fighters that visit Thailand to attend training camps, and always bring what they learn back to their students. The transfer of knowledge is second to none. All of the coaches are great, bringing their own style and experiences to the table. You can expect to see legitimate Thai style Muay Thai, Dutch style kickboxing, kickboxing, western boxing, and a mix of everything in between.
Training here, you will run into a range from professional fighters, amateur level, and also people that just want to get a great workout and relieve some stress. The culture and community are welcoming and act like a big family. Whether you want to train to fight in the ring, learn REAL self defense, or just get in great shape you need to check this place out.
I've trained at AKATX for over 2 years and I cannot say enough how much I love this gym. All the coaches are very experienced and highly trained. They put a lot of focus on proper technique; they explain techniques thoroughly and provide helpful constructive criticism to help you hone your skills. The conditioning here is also amazing; the coaches really know how to push you to do your very best in every class. The classes are physically challenging, but the results are clear; I've consistently seen that our fighters have better stamina compared to fighters from other gyms.
AKATX offers a free trial class and doesn't pressure you to sign up or force you to sign long contracts. The classes are split by skill level so newcomers don't have to feel intimidated and advanced students never feel stunted. Whether you're training for a fight or just trying to get in shape, the coaches support your goals. I highly recommend this gym to anyone of any skill level--as long as you're willing to take the challenge and give it your all.
I love this gym! I've been training with the academy since the beginning of the summer and have felt my strength and cardio improve immensely in the few short months I have been attending classes. The coaches are great at focusing on technique and guiding you through pad work, drilling and sparring. Aside from the workout, the community at the gym is warm and welcoming; since joining I have been able to connect with other members and become friends with the people I train with. I would highly recommend this gym to beginners or advanced students!
I still consider myself fairly new to Austin even though I've been for two-going on three years now. I wanted to find an alternative way to stay active, and came across Austin Kickboxing Academy. I made an appointment with Randy Vera to get an idea of his background and training. I try to be as intentional and purposeful in how I support small own businesses due to the gentrification in the area. I have been training with Randy since summer 2018 (about 3 months or so now). I initially only signed up for one set of sessions (20 classes), but enjoy working with Randy so much, that I can see myself training with him as long as I am in Austin. Therefore, I signed up for another 20 classes and look forward to continue working with him. Randy is full of positive energy, uplifting, down-to-earth, and always challenges you to your fullest potential. The rest of the team who give off more of a family vibe--Tessa, Nick, Erik, Charles--are always welcoming and reflect Randy's energy. I highly recommend this place whether you are just a beginner or more advanced because these folks will definitely help you reach your goals.
If I could give less Stars I would! Worst experience visiting a gym & will never step foot here again. New in town and looking to find a gym so I asked if the first class was free and the front desk douche said absolutely first class is always free. I got dropped off expecting to work and showed up on time for kickboxing but by time the doucher finished the "tour" class had begun so I just found a empty bag to work on but the owner saw me alone and stopped me. Asked me if I was in the class and I said I just finished the tour & didn't know where to go and instead of putting me in the drill he took me back to the front desk and said I was breaking the rules. Now I'm sitting in the corner like i was told talking to the boxing coach waiting for the next class to start and next thing I know I'm being told I have to pay $25 now if I want to train AFTER BEING TOLD I WAS OK TO TRAIN TODAY!. EVEN the boxing coach was pissed! followed me outside wanting me to come back & spar his fighter but we didn't know why I was being treated like this. Every gym in town offers a free class but I chose this place & completely wasted my night.
Super detailed and friendly instruction for all ages and skill levels. I highly recommend them!!!

I've been coming here for almost two years and I love it! I had never tried kickboxing before and tried it on a whim. After my first class I was hooked and signed up. The instructors are awesome. They work you hard but are friendly and patient. Great for beginners but also those who've trained before- they have several staff and trainees that fight on a regular basis. The people who train here are friendly and helpful to beginners as well. I would recommend this place to anyone. If you've been thinking about trying it out, do it!
Highly recommended. I've been training here for the last 3 1/2 years, and it's exactly what a fight academy should be. There is no drama or politics, just good hard training by experienced coaches. All of the coaches have amateur or professional fight experience (and many are currently competing), and most have trained in Thailand.
Fair warning: there is no a/c, and the coaches expect you to be disciplined and do your best. Everyone's best is different, and your best ability will change day-by-day, so you won't be held to an unrealistic standard... but you are expected to work hard. If you don't mind getting sweaty and aren't afraid of hard work and discipline, this is a good gym for you.
Update: 3 Years later.
Still going strong!! Improving every single day w/these wonderful coaches! I've been here on and off for about 3 years now and all of the coaches have the highest experience and have been training for 10+ years. Every coach will push you hard and will break the limit you thought you had!! Trust me, it's a wonderful feeling. And they are all VERY passionate about teaching and molding us into better fighters. You WILL see results and you WILL grow stronger. If you are going to half ass in class, not listen, throw around attitudes and not give 100%, then get out. All the coaches have the utmost pride for each and everyone of us here. There is no drama and it's strictly 110% training. This is what a gym should be.
This is the best place in town. Period. A great balance of learning the technique and pushing yourself physically. I've been coming for just over a year now and have no end in site. I would recommend this place to anyone thinking about taking up the sport or looking for a different method of exercise than the norm.
Great gym! The coaching staff has been nothing but amazing! They really work with you to build your skill. What I love about this gym is that they hold you to high expectations and really push you to hit your goal- whatever that is.
