Great training, friendly staff and knowledgeable instructor. Thanks for having me!
Great training, friendly staff and knowledgeable instructor. Thanks for having me!
I trained here as a kid, and loved the competitive atmosphere on the mats. Coach Dave was friendly and taught different techniques each week that helped me succeed on the mats and in competitions across the state. I highly recommend anyone to try it out-- no matter what your skill level is.
I absolutely love Austin Jiu-Jitsu! I've been with the school for just about five years now and it feels like home. The coach, Dave Thomas, is extremely talented, knowledgeable and encouraging. My training partners are consistently safe yet challenging. There is a very unique and inviting atmosphere at this school. I highly recommend it to anyone, whether you're just starting out or been grappling for years.
Coach Dave is a great teacher. He is able to break techniques down to their essential parts and explain them thoroughly. I appreciate very much how safety is stressed in the gym. It is a welcoming environment, I feel at home at Austin Jiu Jitsu.
The gym, itself, is shared among different offerings of martial arts. So, don't be surprised if you drop in and there is a taekwondo class going on. The BJJ group sessions are mostly in the evenings and are comprised of a good mix of differing skill levels. Being a newbie-White-belt I found it to be welcoming and challenging at the same time. I'm 40 and an executive sales rep. I "roll" with 19 year olds and 50+. So it's for all adult ages. It's also safe. Dave, the instructor, emphasizes safety and technique above all else. If you want a workout that trains you in MA responsibly, without getting your face rearranged this is the place.
Austin Jiu-Jitsu is the best! Coach Dave Thomas is welcoming to anyone interested in learning. He is very knowledgeable, and always open to suggestions or questions on techniques, even from someone who has just walked in the door for the first time. The school has a small group of dedicated training partners, much like a family. There is a wide range of experience and skill level within the group, which I think helps everyone improve while training together. Several within this group also help Coach Dave teach. Safety always comes first, but the group is still laid back and has fun while learning and training. I recommend Austin Jiu-Jitsu to anyone willing to step through the door to learn something difficult but extremely rewarding and fun.

Spectacular school. I've trained at several places in Austin over the past 7 years, and know students and instructors from almost every school in the area.
This place is a HIDDEN GEM. Instructor has insane technical ability, a clear and helpful teaching style, a BEAUTIFUL gym with the best mats I've seen anywhere, bar none (which are cleaned at the end of almost every class, and show it)...
And the bonus: class sizes are super small. It's like this one little unknown secret, right in the heart of west campus.
That means lots of quality instruction and one on one time. I really, finally, feel like I'm part of a team here--something I haven't felt strongly anywhere else.
Highly recommended.
