I have been a member/participant since moving here in 2013 with the Alexander YMCA. The staff and supervision when we first started using the summer camp in 2013 was exemplary. Responsible, young adults that were able to co-operatively manage children in a nurturing way. Evermore it's children minding children, and the buck is being passed in such a way that is truly alarming. I've never had an issue until this past summer. It was overcrowded, understaffed, fundamentally underprepared. Never was a permission slip issued for any of the field trips, children are allowed to do as they wish for unknown amounts of time, and rules are not adhered to, until something goes wrong. Another child was allowed to bring their phone to camp, and numerous children were allegedly looking at improper material, while none of the staff witnessed any such event, witness was taken by children against other children. Instead of taking into account that due to their own underage understaffing, Noone was supervising these children! They instead chose to pass the buck to the parents, (none of whom were present)to avoid possible litigation. Before notifying the custodial parent of one of the children, they called DHS. DHS!!!! For a supposed non profit, that costs over a thousand dollars for a 10 week summer camp, excluding those fortunate enough to receive their paltry "scholarships" this is reprehensible . Where does the money go? Majority of the supervision is basically an intern like position as young as 13. I won't be returning to the Alexander YMCA. For the money, I can definitely find better childcare, and for the experience, I'm sure there's a state funded free daycare that is comparable.
