I've been gym hunting. Firstly, the staff here are friendly and the facility is spacious with plenty of group fitness and classes. A variety of equipment and exercise options, including some that others do not have -- but I have found them in gyms with monthly rates 1/5 of this. However, they do have a larger functional training area, think CrossFit type training but it's not entirely unique, just more equipment.
For the cost however, it does give the appearance of a gym. Dirty should not be confused with trashy, but it definitely looks like a gym not in the class for which it gives the outward portrayal it is supposed to be. Most equipment do show signs of long use, some are rusted and show signs of real wear. If this were a different type of facility, I wouldn't care but the cost brings it to mind.
With the move, they will be losing the pool. It was one redeeming quality for the monthly price. Without stepping up to Life Time, they offer more classes like Yoga, Les Mills, Cycling and Pilates, more private fitness areas and a sauna/steam room. Otherwise, you're getting a Gym with the same basic amenities, free weights, machines, circuit training, etc. Access to the pool would have given me greater pause to consider this gym more seriously.
My conclusion is simply this. The facility does not seem to be treated poorly, but like a gym, not a recreational health facility. The classes, steam room, and other unique features are nice options, but other popular places have *different* options with the same basic amenities we all expect. So its about what you want out of a facility.
With that said, and soon to be no pool, I cannot entirely justify the membership cost. It isn't entirely outrageous for what they have, and the upkeep of the facility is a demerit. The options aren't expansive enough to be all inclusive, only different than other places for considerably less. I might enjoy a class every now and again in yoga or cycling, but not all the time. The things I really do want, that other places have, they don't. Therefore, it isn't completely worth it (to me).
