I have been training at New York Martial Arts Academy for quite some time now and I have had a great experience. The instructors are very helpful, very flexible, and very friendly. They are benevolent and make sure you feel comfortable with everything. I have not had any difficulties here with any of the staff. When I am undergoing personal issues that hinder me from being able to continue training, the staff members are willing to adjust in order to accommodate me. When I was having a financial difficulty, the school froze my account yet still allowed me to train for free. They never required payment during the time I trained for free and this allowed me to get back on my feet, financially. In my experience, no other academy or gym has offered me this kind of compromise. So, I highly recommend this school.
Wow, an incredible place to learn and grow in a martial art, self defense and betterment of individual self environment. Google would only let me give 5. I'd say at least 7. Go there. Learn there. Grow there. Find out what works and maybe doesn't. See you on the training floor!
So far so good! Small morning classes available at the Astoria location. Instructions have decades worth of knowledge. The space itself is small but spacious, and definitely inspiring with the various art and quotes.

It's the best time, money and sweat I have ever spent. The investment to reward ratio is incredible. When I look back, I find it hard to believe that it took me 3 days to say yes. If could go back in time and join up as soon as they opened I would not hesitate to do so.

A couple months into my journey and I could not have hoped for a better experience. Every instructor will make you feel comfortable with where you're at and induce progress. Expect to get what you put in.

Positive vibes, positive teacher, great people and pushes you to work hard. Very focused on discipline. Recommend!
A great place to get in shape or to relieve stress, the instructors are very informative and will have you break a sweat as well as give you positive reinforcement. I can't wait for my next class!

One of the best decisions I ever took was joining nymaa school in Astoria. Great school and great environment overall. The instructors are great and well educated in the art of jeet kune do. Anyone one the search for a true martial art should give this place a try.
Absolutely love taking my daughter to class. Not only is Sifu John strict because he has to be but he's extremely nice with both my daughters (one his student the other my infant). He has a sense of humor with the kids when he needs to be & he's serious when it's needed as well. Which is great because as parent I feel he helps me have my daughter continue being responsible coming to class & learning yet enjoying herself with such a great teacher. Def recommend Martial Arts to any parent that wants their child to be responsible yet feel they can enjoy class as well.

I have been training at NY Martial Arts Academy for about 9 months. My time here has been a positive experience both in training in the art of Jeet Kind Do and my everyday life. The training facility is great and the instructors are excellent. The instructors truly love the art of JKD and want to share it. JKD is a fabulous form of self defense and classes here are an amazing workout. I've met some great people since starting classes and I look forward to continuing to train here.

This is a very technique driven school , down to the science and all. Environmental and people friendly. Would recommend for everyone. It's a great confidence booster to many to learn how to defend you're self better and just in general for first timers

My son and I started training at NYMMA in 2012 and we both love the art, philosophy, and the instructors. It is very difficult to find a school that teaches an effective combat martial art balanced with a friendly & collaborative environment. The knowledge, skills, and passion that the instructors bring everyday really make it the best school we have ever trained at.
As for the art itself, it may seem simple on the surface but I am still working to perfect the skills I was taught during my first intro week at the school. The art teaches what is equivalent to black belt techniques in other arts the first day and gives you time to perfect them through out your training. It focuses on simplify, efficiency, and effectiveness and now I also take that same approach to everything else I do.
The kid's class has helped my son develop a sense of discipline, focus, and dedication. The supportive environment has really elevated his confidence level, on top of that I know that he can defend himself if he needs to.
I highly recommend this school to anyone interested in martial arts, but know that it will take commitment and a willingness to push yourself past your comfort zone, and the instructors and other students will be there to support you!
My 6 year old daughter just started last week and she loves it . Already seeing how good she's getting and the teachers are amazing !
I have been training at NY Martial Arts Academy for many years. As an older man, I was always scared of where I could go learn martial arts without getting treated differently because of my age. Immediately at NYMAA I felt right at home. All of the instructors are very welcoming, always greeting you and making you feel comfortable. NYMAA is somewhere where I will stay for a long time because the art they teach, Jeet Kune Do, is truly the most fulfilling art to study.
