They are a rip off. Joined this gym a few years back not realizing it was a contract and fine prints about cancelling membership. Got relocated for work. Got a court summons after 5 years that I owe thousands of dollars. Be careful and DO NOT go into a contract. Would never go back or recommend this gym to anyone. Not today or in a lifetime

Yeah, I wouldnt get involved with them...my girlfriend had lots of difficulty with cancellation...especially personal training and its ridiculous. They will completely give you the cold shoulder like they do not understand your concern. Some mumbojumbo about corporate contact and they've been doing this for some time actually. Its basic bullying for revenue and it completely makes me sick. Especially since we were such good customers. Don't sign any contracts with them because they intend to take your money even if you don't use the facility DURING your attempt to cancel.

No exaggeration...

This gym sucks!

I signed up here about a week ago and only had the displeasure to workout there once!

Let me tell you... once is enough.

My BIGGEST COMPLAINT: The workout room lacks equipment, is extremely SMALL, and there is POOR AIR CIRCULATION.

I'm not kidding when I say the workout room is TINY! And it feels like you're in an oven down there!

MY SECOND COMPLAINT: The showers stink. They obviously don't scrub the walls or floors on a regular basis. I saw fungus, or residue, on the shower wall. I was grossed out! And I'm a GUY! I could only imagine the horrors of women!

MY CONCLUSION: I don't expect towel service, spa, and all that other girly, unnecessary stuff. I goto the gym to go to battle and LIFT WEIGHTS, and I can hardly do that at this gym location!

I'm never coming back here!

Fix the air circulation downstairs! Add more machines! I'm 6' 4" and it feels like my head is going to hit the ceiling in the weight room!

I sent in my doctor's note for personal training cancellation and I still have not heard back from them. I sent in the note twice, the first time was over a month and a half ago, they said they never received it but I know they did because in that same envelope I included my membership cancellation, a week later the membership was cancelled but not my pt. I sent it in a 2nd time and I still have not heard back. I keep calling their office but the call center employees are rude and unhelpful always telling me to "call back in two or three days for your resolution, but we cannot help you because your resolution has not be posted by the corporate office". It seems like if someone wants to get out of a contract with them they make it very difficult, making me wish I had never signed up with them, it's very disappointing. It's very sad that a place dedicated to health and fitness refuses to be helpful when someone is injured and needs time to recover because they will no longer be getting paid. I don't think that Bally Total Fitness genuinely cares about it's clients or customer service, I have never experienced such negligent, inattentive, and unconcerned customer service in my life from any other gym. This one does have good equipment but their service is terrible, if you are reading this PLEASE FOR YOUR SAKE DO NOT SIGN UP WITH THEM AT ANY COST!!

I echo all comments about the size and condition of the place. I also echo the comments about the cancellation policy, except it was worse for me. I knew my time in NYC was coming to an end in advance and asked the front desk 2 months prior about the proper way to cancel. I was informed that I need to stop back at the desk a month before my final day and fill out paperwork. Of course, I did that and was told that they didn't have any paper work handy and I could cancel online. There is no obvious way to cancel online. I came the next day and was told by someone else that the ONLY way to cancel was to email the customer service link on the website. So, this is now a few days past the month mark. It took about a week for customer service to get back to me and, when they did, I was told that my cancellation was processed. Then, after my cancellation date passed, I was charged for another month and was told it was due to ME not canceling 10 days prior to the start of the last month (effectively 40 days prior to the desired cancellation date). Nice bait-and-switch by the employees, eh? It is no wonder that they bill for the first and "last" month in advance when you foolishly join.

Do yourself a favor in NYC and join NYSC. It costs more but is well, WELL worth it!

The size of this place and the smell are pretty bad. But, I need to add additional complaints; the staff lied to me and tried to convince me that they have a health insurance requirement that every member must submit to a health evaluation. That is total BS. They are using it as a way to get you with a personal trainer in hopes you'll sign on with one.

In addition to that, their machines are in horrible shape. The leg press has had a broken belt for at least 10 weeks. The bikes tension slips and almost cause a hyperextension of your knee, the foot pedals on the bikes are missing straps and various grips are missing off of many of the machines as well.

Don't get me started on the repetitive HORRIBLE Bally's soundtrack of the worst songs ever to be released. Of course, you can provide your own personal supply of music but you can't fix the problems listed here and by others. The smell around the sole water faucet makes you wonder if the walls surrounding it are covered in mold. Ugh.

The locker room is dirty and smells bad. There is no squat rack. It is OK for the price, but my main complaint is about their cancellation policy. They keep charging my credit card after repeated requests to cancel my membership.

The employees in the gym told me that they cannot cancel my membership and that I should call the customer service number. When I called the customer service number, I first had to wait on the phone for about an hour, and then they said that I cannot cancel my membership over the phone or fax and that I have to send a letter to their PO box instead. I sent them a paper letter with a cancellation request as they told me. Over a week later, I saw another charge on my credit card. I called the customer service again, and they said they still hadn't processed my request. I think that is their way to delay cancellation and get more money out of customers who don't use their gym anymore.

I googled complaints about Bally's cancellation policy and found many horror stories much worse than mine.

The personal instruction was good though.
