My 4 years old is in his second years here. Teachers are amazing! Perfect mix of patience, authority and fun too! Of all the activities we do, karate teachers are the best at what they do. Only complain is that space is little tight to go in and out but I know real estate is expensive in NYC so I understand.
Very lucky to have found you guys for my 5 year old! He had so much fun at class, really followed the enthusiastic instructors whom were teaching the discipline and listening skills. The whole class duolicate well what was going on. Lots of instructors pretty students in the class a rare thing. So my son got lots of attention and help.
This martial arts school is a gem in NYC. All coaches are knowledgable, amazing professionals and most of all, super caring and loving teachers. Kids love to go to Karate. They learn about discipline, focus, control, and they have fun by practicing the art of Karate. Coaches helps kids building self-esteem and helps them believing in themselves.
They deserve everything good that comes to them.
Great place for kids and adults! You should try the BJJ class!

Started training here for an extra workout and it's been great. Instructors are knowledgeable and take the time to work with you. Clean and friendly facility.
I took the Hip + Fit classes at MMA. I loved that Hip + Fit was an all women class too. The classes are so much fun, a perfect workout, great stress relief, and the staff are all wonderful. Sherise is also amazing and there is always an amazing playlist. I had no kickboxing experience when I started. I highly recommend the program and MMA to anyone interested in kickboxing!
Caveat emptor. For almost a full year our now 5 year old son was enrolled in classes. We even hosted his birthday party there, since he was very into Martial Arts (and Ninjago). The studio itself is small and a bit rundown, and we were not all that impressed by what we observed. Some of the instructors were OK, but others were mediocre at best. The schedule options are limited (one class for each age bracket offered several days/week), but we stuck with it for as long as we could. They will charge you a monthly fee for 2-3 classes/week, which is fine. The problem is that if/when you need or want to cancel (i.e., when your child's schedule changes and you can no longer make it to the one session they offer for your child's age group), they claim that you are locked into a long-term contract, and keep charging your credit card. Customer service is non-existent, and they outsource their billing to a company called "ASF Payment Solutions" (a 3rd party billing agency). The whole setup feels a bit sketchy. Also, be aware that they will nickel and dime you for small up-charges all the time (e.g., there is a "graduation" ceremony every few months at the end of class, and you are charged a fee each time over and above the monthly class fee). Definitely would not recommend this place - there are much better options available on the UWS.

What we love the most is the commitment to understanding each child's temperament and creating a positive environment where they may grew and develop their skills. They communicate well with the parents and focus on discipline, building confidence and respect in their training. They also offer so much more, like camp, children's events and birthday parties. Coach Cherise has built a dynamic team of talented instructor's and we recommend MMA for anyone(child/adult) looking for the perfect place to train.

As a parent with a martial arts background, I wanted to find the BEST karate school for my kids. After visiting several schools in New York City, I can say without a doubt that Modern Martial Arts is by far the BEST martial arts school in NYC.
The instructors are professional, knowledgeable, encouraging and understanding with students of all ages and of all skill levels. Every class is taught by 3 or even 4 instructors at all times, so the teacher / student ratio is very low, which, to me, is important because individual attention is given to everyone. The instructors teach karate & jiu-jitsu techniques, but more importantly, they build the kids' character, confidence and self worth. Mrs. Sherise is the head instructor at the Upper West Side location and she is doing an amazing job.
At the same time, there is a sense of community, which is really invaluable. Many parents make new friends and the kids find their karate buddies that will become their companion on their journey to the black belt. Summer camps, holiday camps, parents' night out and birthday parties reinforce the bond of the community and I am happy to say that my family has taken advantage of all that is offered.
