After rowing competitively in college, working out just to stay in shape unfortunately did not motivate me. I tried several gyms and eventually really liked fitness boxing. However, 2 years ago when I moved back to NYC after being away for 17 years, I decided it was time to learn a 'real' fighting art, in order to learn skills and feel as if I could protect myself. I can't express how happy I was to have found a place like JKD NYC. Going in, there were 2 things I was worried about. One: since I had never trained in any fighting art, I was worried I wouldn't find a place willing to train raw beginners. Two: being a woman, I was worried about training with men, as they could possibly be annoyed at having to train with a less strong person (I have experienced this in the past). None of this is true at JKD. Every person, no matter the skill level, treats every other person with respect and challenges them to become better. This is of course because the owner, Chris Moran, and the other amazing instructors (Cam and Evan) foster an atmosphere of friendly competitiveness. I have done a mixture of group and personal training sessions - sometimes even having to take a couple of months off because of work conflicts. I am always delighted to return and continue building my skills.
