A great cause cycle for survival

I was an Equinox member for over five years. I've used ~20 different clubs all over the city at different points. I'm leaving my review at the Bryant Park location because it's the one I used the most in the recent past, but this review applies to Equinox overall.

First, specifics about the club:

1) It's in the basement, so if you want views / natural light while you're working out, this isn't the club for you

2) The facilities are nice and modern compared to many Equinox branches, though not as fresh as some of the newest locations (Dumbo). Still, it was always one of my favorite clubs to work out in.

3) It is a nightmare at peak hours, at least in the ladies locker rooms -- think long lines for showers and hair dryers. After 9am, or if you can sneak your lunch workout in a little early (or late, just avoiding the showers right around 1pm) you're better off.

The reason for my low star review is how disappointed I am in Equinox's cancellation policy. As someone who was a member for over five years, I should easily be able to cancel my membership; I've given this place enough money. Instead, when I went to cancel I was told cancellations don't become effective for 45 days, information that is not available on their website or in their FAQs. (I also then found out I could have cancelled in the app / over the phone, even though everything on the website says you have to cancel in person.) I have moved out of the city and have not used the gym since moving because I can't fit it in around my commute. All Equinox is doing is nickel and diming me at the tail end of my membership, which feels like a terrible way to treat a loyal customer. I have a sour taste in my mouth over what should have been an overall positive experience.

Amazing classes with top notch instructors. All the employees are great, front desk is always so kind and accommodating, the manager Nick is the best and always makes himself available for questions/concerns. Such a great break to come down and unwind in the middle of your day. Well worth it!

Not the best gym for weightlifting: only 3 power racks, and they generally close at 9. They also treat you like meat, not humans: I was charged 45 days in advance for canceling. I know this is in the contract, but the point is that they don't care about you. They also charge $50/guest. Go to the nearby NYSC gym instead, I hear much better things about it.

Definitely not a flagship location

I have literally never been to a more crowded gym in my life. It is an absolute joke!

Really the best and friendliest gym in New York. My issue is like all good things it gets loved to death and can become too busy, maybe extending hours or adding more equipment if thats even possible, but regardless it has the best energy most of the time and I belong and use many gyms in LA. I dont believe everything should be for everyone, then its kind of for no one. But this gym comes pretty close. Its particularly for serious fitness types and the more motivated wether a beginner or experienced. There's hard core here and lots of male physique model types for motivation and inspiration. I love Karen, she is like den Mama here, if you need anything ask for her.

Not my normal equinox and I just had a dreadful experience here with the management. I was doing a superset of push ups and bar pull downs - was doing my push ups when someone tapped me on the shoulder to ask if they could work in - I said yes but asked if they would mind not tapping me mid push up and woah they did not like that. She actually said 'you've told that to the wrong person I'm a manger here. You can leave!' Clearly taken aback by this vitriolic over reaction I told her I wasn't and I want to talk to the GM. This other manager said fine but she was coming in the room with me. Walked me like a bad boy up to the principals office and would not leave until asked to do so by her supervisor. After describing the scenario the GM said that I was wrong - Bryant park is a particularly busy gym and people had to act as community members here. I grew up with siblings and I know how to share. I also know you don't touch someone without their express consent even if you're in a hurry to use a pull down bar. I also don't understand why if the gym is that frantically busy there is not a policy asking staff to not work out during peak hours. Or hey why doesn't staff be nice and amenable to customers paying quite high membership fees. Or hey why not use some delicate customer service techniques when interacting with your membership base instead of acting territorially.

Great yoga class. I really liked how the teacher encouraged people to get the toxins out. I love the eucalyptus towels. It's always a great shower with nice soaps and shampoos. Nice facility and employees.

I think I'm there peak times, and it's super crowded. Like you will need to wait for free weights crowded. It's super convenient for those Friday's when one's skipping town for the weekends, but I would not make this my primary gym. Also music is way too loud.

This gym is far too crowded. It's impossible to have a decent work-out unless you go at lunch-times (but even then it can be very busy). The membership fee is far too high for what you get. My advice - shop around for nearby alternatives (e.g. NY Sports Club etc).
