Think twice and long enough before you decide to join this gym or you will regret it later.
This is luxury gym of Manhattan, a.k.a they expect all members to be super rich so they can keep digging your money and treat you like a walking ATM with load of cash. If you have lot of money to spend, go here. If not, there are plenty of other amazing crossfit gym in NYC with similar price range and less stiff rules. At the end of the day, this is just a business for them and you are the source of their revenue.
Crossfit program: 1/5
Worst program ever! Most of the times, you workout the same area of your muscle for few days in a row. For example: Monday T2B(9/11), Tuesday push press(9/12), Wed Pullup(9/13), Friday another Pullup(9/15), Saturday Snatch(9/16) and Sunday Kettlebell Snatch (9/17). If you are not careful enough to choose which day to workout, you will get injured a lot! Who would come up with such clever programming??
System: 1/5
Frankly, this is the most chaotic gym I've been to. At the peak hours, 3 classes are running and staggering at the same time. For new member like me, you will be like a lost child in the crowded park. For example on Thursday I took barbell class at 7PM. There were 3 coaches (1 not working) there and three of them gave me different answers when I asked where the barbell class is. I don't even know where I should warm up and stretch too. Wallball target for RX is on top of barbell area. If you fail to hit the target, you will smack others by their heads or faces. Have fun!
There are times when you feel sore 1 day or 2 days after the workout. Front desk told me the day after that I have to cancel 12 hours before, after I get charged $10.45. That to say if you feel sore the next day and you have registered the class, you either keep going and get injured or lose $10. Also, if you are late, you will get charge for another $10. In the end, they will try to get as much money as they could from you.
Membership: -5/5
The most inflexible system and this is the reason why you should think hard before joining. As I said before, they treat you like an ATM than as a member. Out of desperation for finding new box, I chose Solace and joined on 9/5, because Colby can waive my sign up fee. Although apparently, there is no sign up fee until end of September. Frankly, I won't join if I know there is no sign up fee until end of the month!! Sneaky business! On 9/14, I was informed that my old box is finally back to business so I requested Colby if she can upgrade my membership to 1 month. I am not taking the advantage as circumstance has changed and it's not like I've been in Solace for more than 1 month. I kindly asked her to upgrade my membership and I will pay the remaining balance for that month. She refuses. And yes, the cancellation fee is $500. That to say, my 1 month trial becomes $787 and not including the day I felt sore for another workout session. This is the part that you have to think hard If your life circumstance has unexpectedly changed. She said "cancellation fee" is standard for everyone, which is a total lie. As per "Term and Condition" # 9, it is said: "UPGRADING MEMBERSHIP: A Member may upgrade his or her membership with the prior consent of management; provided Member/Buyer will be responsible for paying an upgrade fee and for the ongoing payment of any additional monthly fees associated with such upgrade". That to say, Solace actually can upgrade my membership but they refused to do so for an easy $500
So, yes I have wasted $500 for cancellation fee and yes I have paid $798 for one month membership. I hope you guys got the best out of that easy money.
Overall: Stay away from this crossfit! There are plenty of great boxes in NYC where you are treated like a part of the community, instead of ATM machine.
