I'll start with...
I will be going back.
Don't expect too much, as they are there to pump steam, provide intense heat and to top it all off with near freezing water.
It's not about the aesthetics there.
You want sauna, you effing got it.
With that said, I Strongly recommend going there.
It's an experience.
No fluff.
I spent an hour and a half going back and forth through the different rooms.
The more time I spent there, the more I appreciated how darn simple it was.
I will be buying their "card" and I will go here after work when I can.
Go for it.
Give it a shot.
Totally worth it.

Awesome! An absolute must go. Go on a snowey day and drink a beer on the roof deck watching the steam float off your body:)

I wont go here again. It is not a convenient location. It is on far end 1st ave. The space itself is dingy, run down, old, cramped and very crowded with minimals. There is no hot tub. Lots people go I think it's because it's affordable than other spacious, bright and clean Korean spas. The heat here is good. Lots of women bring their own products to use. I wont recommend wasting money for a body treatment here. The Russian lady barely worked. She just put on some products and wash it off. There is a long line of waiting and delay for service. Then lots of interruptions of her stepping away of whatever excuses. She is very unprofessional.

My first time visiting New York I wanted to find and do something out of the ordinary. Spent a few hours in the evening here and it was amazing. The steam rooms were amazing. The "Russian" room I could only stay a few short min. way to hot for me. The Ice bath was cold a refreshing. Mixed crowd of all ages and gender. Will defiantly go back again when I visit NYC again.

Pros: very hot russian banya downstairs. If you're looking for a proper steam, you'll find it here.

Cons: pretty much what is said in other reviews. No one seems to care about the aesthetics of this place and the cleanliness is at a bare minimum. There is a faint-ish moldy smell. (I think it's a little strange how some reviews seem to equate the dinginess of this place to "authenticity". It seems somewhat of an insult to Russian culture, to be honest.)

Full-disclosure: I used to be a regular at South-Western Bathhouse in Toronto and that place is phenomenal. It was a proper Russian banya where the owners put care into every single detail (the owner even re-tiled the Turkish sauna when he noticed the previous tiles were sticking out to much and bothering his patrons). I can't help but compare every banya I go to to that place.

If you do one thing in nyc that nurtures the mind body and soul .. let this be it ...

Very authentic experience. Not exactly what I was expecting. It does provide all necessary aspects of a spa, with a range of saunas, steam rooms, cold pool/showers, change room and restaurant.

The facility was established in 1892, and you can tell; there is a charm to the dark stone sauna what looks to have not changed since 1892, but many other areas could use a bit of renovations. If you are more accustomed to moder/fancy spas, I would say don't go, but if you are looking for very old school, raw-essentials and you don't care about the look, then this place is for you. It does provide everything you need for a hot/cold water circuit or health cycle, but just very bare-bones, many locals go here.

The price was a bit more than I think they should charge but okay. Towels, lockers, sandels(only men's), robes, and men's swim suits (none for women) are provided. Food is well priced. Unless I lived in the area, I don't think I'd go out of my way to go, but it was a neat experience.

Incredible, rich, and authentic experience. My mind was alive and focused after the combo of hot and cold. The steam or sauna rooms then the cold pool....that will get you right and create a memory.

People watching was on another level, but respect the traditions.

The place is famous for all the right reasons. It's that good and worth the price. I wish it was closer to home:(

Some tips from our recent visit. Full write up on our website at sling adventures.

- Try to go on a weekday as weekends are reportedly very busy.

- Check the website schedule for a David week if you want a Groupon discount. Get a Groupon voucher ahead of time (a 40% discount is available)

- Bring water to keep hydrated.

- Bring something of value for security deposit (wallet or keys, phones not accepted).

- You can wear your own swim wear. Only shorts are provided though.

- Cover your head with a wet towel in the Russian room.

Enjoy!

I saw that you move my comment to the bottom when it was new compared to the others, but is part of having a business to TAKE COMMENTS SPECIALLY WHEN IS TRUTHFUL. This place is DISGUSTING, is NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURES, is SO DIRTY, SMELL BAD and is DARK. For how DIRTY and like the way SMELLS it feels that you can get an INFECTION on your feet or any part of your body. THEY CHRGE $45.00 and you get towels, shorts, bathrobes COMPLETELY OLD for that amount THEY SHOULD OFFER BETTER things and this place SHOULD BE SPOTLESS. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!

Great bath house. Terrific massage. Not for everyone, but if you enjoy European style bath houses, then you will love this!

My favorite Bania in the city .
I use to go there for many years and always enjoyed the visit .
I love everything about that place .
From the Rusian room to the aroma therapy room .
From the entrance to the sun deck .
From the friendly staff to the costumers .
A lot of famous people and actors are attending this Bania ,so you could easily sit and sweat next to Jerald Batler,Collin Farrell,Uma Thurman...and many ,many more .
Every time we have the opportunity I go there .
Unfortunately not that often as I wanted .

I've come to this place since the late 90's and it's a powerful way to relax. I stayed for 3 hours and got a body scrub from Margarita which was awesome. However, it is getting too noisy and hard to find relaxation. While getting my massage all I heard was loud talking, and also a lot of talking in the steam room. It's just too much talking.

East Village classic. I always get spectacular service. There's always friendly people hanging out to chit chat with. The kitchen makes great pelmeni. And they have a Russian beer baltika. Well this beer is readily available all over Brooklyn it's not so easy to find in Manhattan. So a beer steam room sauna and massage make for a great afternoon

Yeah.. it has not been renovated for last 30 years at least.
But if all you need is a good hot banya, you will be fine.

Lovely baths place with range of rooms that vary by temperature with friendly service. Spent all winter there.

February 12, 2018 00:27

This place is an expensive scary dungeon with several horrific slime chambers each inhabited by its own breed of ancient sweating torture boss. These bosses will encourage you to be rubbed with mud or beat with branches. Watch out that costs extra. There may be a hoard of coked up lawyers showing the Vice Presidents son a good time after their holiday party, do not engage them. The sweating bosses will take care of the heathens and you will wear a terry cloth robe to honor them. A woman will approach you in the ice bath, do not let her touch your neck. They have restrooms. Would be four stars but I got a stomach bug. For the price of two or three admissions you could get a hotel room somewhere with a hot shower.

February 7, 2018 15:16

Update: changed back to 1 star after experiencing a 10 times better bathhouse experience at a Brooklyn location

I gave this place 2 stars because the saunas and ice bath were enjoyable experiences (besides the moldy steam room.) However the rest of the place made sure I will not be coming back. I understand that the appeal of the place is how it is no-frills and old school, but I still found the place to be rundown, crowded, and unorganized. The worst part was that the receptionist will not let you pay without trying 5 times to convince you to pay $300 for a membership when nothing about the place made me want to go back. They also charged me for my friend's food we ordered together, which would be fine, but I found out later they charged him anyway. Of course no one answers the phone when I try to resolve this.

Hard to rate this one... On the one hand, it's amazing to be able to travel back to the 70s and 80s NY bathhouse culture - really well preserved time capsule. Well stocked dining area close to the entrance, lots of different wet and dry rooms.. definitely worth a visit.

Kinda of a funky place - been going there 30 years. After 125 years, it's definitely got character. Best to go early in the morning - it gets crowded weekends. The ice cold dunking pool is an experience of its own. Do not miss the Russian Room - a wet towel on the head and buckets of cold water on the head make survival possible. For the full experience, get a platza. The fresh squeezed juices are recommended. The down side: it's 125 years old.

I was warned that this is not a place for romance. I expected horror and that's what I got. This place is in really bad need of restoration and renovation. I felt like I could not relax. The aromatherapy steam room smelled like old sweaty socks. The steam room across the hall was super hot. I thought that was AMAZING but I couldn't soak it all in mentally in tranquilty. The ceilings and floors are old and worn. The tiles are falling off the walls. I was there for 20 minutes and left. There was no female therapist available and even if there was one available I don't think I'd lay in those dark scary tin rooms to receive one.

The bath hot room experience is really amazing. However, the hygiene level is beyond imagination. It is terrible!!! I can respect they want to keep the traditional layout, but making money of $45/admission and spending zero dollar for services to the guests is just not fair. The slippers were for 25 yrs ago at least, the towels were disgusting.

Instead of having a speaker downstairs to call people up when the time is over, all cold war torturing tools are being used to call people up. Constant siren or lights getting on/off for 3 minutes.

Anyhow, I liked the experience but def needs significant improvement and guest respect culture, i.e. customer service.

I'm a seventeen year old girl, my older sister from New York brought my mother and I to the bath house. This place is like another world where I completely lost track of time. While my initial reaction was something close to panic when I felt as though I was being cooked alive, I soon found myself relaxed among the other guests. The extreme conditions tend to put people into a natural high, and the atmosphere becomes one of community and zen. People were nothing but kind to me, and I observed zero perversion of any kind.

I noticed that one comment here complained of sexual assault on someone receiving a service. Obviously, I was not there, so I can't argue against that; however, I will say that the platza (sorry for the misspell) is performed over the entire body. My sister received one, and when the man adjusted her swimsuit to hit more of her body with the leaf bundle, it didn't seem sexual in any way. If you think this might make you uncomfortable, maybe wait to purchase one of these treatments until you see it performed on someone else.

If you are considering visiting the bath house, I would highly suggest reading the negative and positive comments to help you decide if you would enjoy this place. Again, I found it to be amazingly relaxing, but it's an experience with little luxury. If you would like to try the bath house but you arrive and find yourself craving a less-intense experience, try the aroma therapy room, it's lovely. ^-^

A very unique experience with many saunas to explore in the basement. Hours are divided by men-only, women-only, and mixed ("coed") hours, so be sure to check their schedule. While clothing is optional, shorts are required from both genders during mixed hours. On first floor, you can grab some snacks. In the upper levels, there are additional massage rooms and rooftop, where smoking is unfortunately allowed. You will come out refreshed and sleep well at night.

At first glance you might rate this Russian bath a 0-1 star because of its appearance when you first walk in. First of, it looks like your local Bodega store with a "front desk" to the right and a food/juice station to the left with chairs to seat. Second, the locker room look out of date and dirty and third once you go down to the basement the floor is pure concrete, the lights are dimmed, and there is an empty pool to the side. Then I was greeted by a heavy Russian accent man and he suggested that me and my wife go into the steam room before the Russian bath. The steam room was spacious enough for a couple of couples to sit or stand. Once a table was available I was called in. The room was dark with a table that seemed like if I was about to get butchered. However, everything changed once the nice heavy accent man began to bathe me. This bath has to be the best ever body wash I have ever received in my life hands down. I will have to admit at first I was a little skeptical laying in a dark room naked, but he was so professional I did not even care. He even sat me down and washed my hair and face. To be honest, it felt like I was getting a massage and a bath at the same time. After the bath my entire perspective of this place change. I give this place a 5 stars because the service and bath were phenomenal.

the place to relax without pretension or care. No frills, but who needs them. Iconic landmark facility. Old world Schmitz.
