I've been to many gyms in many countries over the years, but New York Combat Sambo really stands out as something special. The head coach Steve does an amazing job putting together very informative classes and fostering an excellent training environment. Whether you're a lifelong martial artist looking to expand their arsenal, or someone looking to get started in the world of combat sports, I could not recommend a better place to go.
If you're based in the New York City area, or even just passing through, definitely stop by! You will not regret it
I've admired martial arts for all of my life, been to several gyms, but my experience at this gym has been the best by far. It's a place for people of all skill levels from beginner to advance, with a welcoming cast of great students. I've been attending this gym for 2 1/2 years and every class still feels like a fresh experience.
I started training here when I was 17 years old and out of HS, I am now 26 years old and continue to be a part of the NYCS family. This gym means much more to me than just just a place where I can train and learn new moves. Here, I was able to connect with my Russian roots by training in the sport of Sambo, which means the world to me.
It is because of this gym I was able to become a more confident person on and off the mats, I love this gym so much that I stepped out my comfort zone to go out and compete all over the country and represent NYCS with pride and honor. Our coaching staff is top notch, Sambo Steve, as the name many people know him by, is a world class instructor. He is very patient, caring, honest, and just tells it how it is. No BS here, and I personally appreciate that a lot. If anyone ever has a question,he will stop and answer it/go over it/ show it again to the whole class, which is not always the case for many other gyms. The way he cares for his students, and our overall team/family environment is another huge reason of why I love this place.
After years of training and competing I decided to give back to the gym by becoming a coach here myself. I cannot recommend this place enough, as it has not only transformed me physically, but mentally aswell. The gym has everything you'd want, all you need to bring is hard work and dedication. 12/5 stars, I'd live here if that was allowed.
As a lifelong martial artist, I've had the privilege at training at a number of gyms. Whenever I am in the New York City area, I always make it a point to go buy New York combat sambo. I consider it one of my homes away from home. The instructors are world-class and carry with them not just the depth of technical knowledge but applied information from years of competition.
This is one of the most welcoming gyms that you can train at and always opens its doors regardless of your affiliation.
I am in NYC on holiday and I had heard good things about Steve and the crew at New York Combat Sambo. I came by for a class and was treated as if I were part of the team immediately by everyone there. You couldn't ask for a more welcoming environment or friendly bunch of people to train with. The smaller class sizes means you actually get attention rather than just being another number on the mat and I learned some cool stuff to take home with me.
