I had to delete my 4 star review and write another review on my disappointment of Retro Fitness's policies and the financing company they use ABC. I joined last summer because it was the closest gym to my apartment, and I have to say overall the gym delivered on appearance, choice of equipment and overall value, but that was last year.
I only live in the area during the summer so I didn't use the membership for 5 months. I received a call from ABC that there was something wrong with my card, and gave them a call back. After the problem was corrected. I decided to use the gym 3 days later. When I go to use the gym, the girl at the counter tells me there is something wrong with my membership and I needed to speak with a manager or pay the membership fee now. I explained to them that this was already taken care of, and they told me that the computer says it wasn't.
So I decided to give ABC a call to figure out what was going on, and they said that the transaction hasn't been posted yet and it won't be posted to the end of the day. I explained to them that they won't let me in unless I pay them for something that has already been resolved. The woman on the phone told me that they do not handle gym policies, and there is nothing she can do on her end. So I asked to speak with a manager at the gym and of course there wasn't one there. So it looks like I wasn't going to be able to use my membership today.
My problem is that their reliance on a third party has left my account in limbo, and it's aggravating to be penalize for something you took care of. They had no problem taking my money while I didn't use the membership during the winter, but now they want to act like I am trying to cheat their system. It's poor customer service and leads me to believe they are no different than any other gym out there. You would think you could get a warning or one time exception and not have to be embarrassed from being deny access.
My membership anniversary is coming up in a month and I will evaluate whether or not it's worth paying for a year membership when I only use it half of the year, and that one time I come in, and they make me feel un-welcomed.
You should know a couple of things when you finance your membership. You will be charged a $19 service fee and a $10 late fee, so if that card is lost or stolen, or if the bank sends you a new card. If that card is used to pay for this membership, make sure you make the appropriate changes with them or you will just have a headache trying to resolve the issue and use the membership.
