This gym was the only one that was rated decently when I moved to the area, and in a year I've seen it go downhill.
Pros - 3 squat racks, with an additional 2 areas that can be used for squatting/deadlifting/olympic lifting with bumper plates. Overall, it seems even during peak hours, you still won't have to wait too much for equipment. That's a big plus.
Downside - Poor area, it's really not near anywhere residential and you'd have to drive quite a bit. Of their 3 entrances, they've also closed off 2 which I think is also a major safety hazard, let alone inconvenient.
Free weights are good, but the machines are extremely poorly managed. There's no constant tension and they shake a lot, which feels unsafe especially with the assisted dip/pullup station.
Bathroom and shower, forget about it. There's no AC in the summer, no heat in the winter, and it smells worse than a subway station.
The reason I cancelled my membership after a year was a combination of the above but the final straw was when they all of a sudden started charging my guest $20 for a day pass. When I started, the manager (Matt) gave me a week to try the gym, and the same for the numerous referrals I made. Recently, I had a friend move to Edison and I told him to check out the gym, but Josh (front desk) said it would be $20 and it's a "new policy". This is unheard out for an independently owned gym.
For the Zapp Management, a few tips in Marketing 101...
1. Treat your loyal customers well
2. Word of mouth referrals is the strongest (and CHEAPEST) form of marketing.
In one moment, Josh allowed your business to lose both an existing customer and a future one. Great job!
