I learned much more from DVD's. It is true the sifu is hardly ever there. They only progress you if you pay "Lucky Money" which are basically bribes to teach you. After you are there a while they try to get you to join the "inner circle" which means you have to pay more than tuition.

Wonderful place to train authentic Ip Man lineage kung fu. The sifu is a wonderful, giving person. The school and other students are also wonderful. Training in a family style atmosphere is a great way to grow quickly in kung fu, and also a lot of fun. I highly recommend everyone try it and see what a positive impact it can have on your day to day life.

Teacher/owner hardly shows up but maybe once a month, style is not authentic or practical. total waste of time, and takes years to teach the same curriculum that is normally taught in the same style within months, simply to get more money. Their attendance in general is almost non-existent Not a single person in this school, including the teacher could handle an amateur boxer.

Would give this school a half star if that was possible, not hating telling the truth , I love Wing Chun system & what I saw there was poor wing Chun , bad form , technique, little sensitivity, & an extremely rude teacher

Great studio to train. Takes time to get good at, but once you do you will feel incredible!

Awesome Kung Fu studio, and the oldest in Omaha. I have studied multiple martial arts and can safely say that this is a great place to train. You will start off with the basics, but once things get rolling you will learn how to throw 15 punches in just a few seconds. Totally worth training here. If you are unsure about training here they have a free trial that you should take advantage of.

This year marks my 20th since meeting the Sifu of this school. I've known him to be a valuable training partner, good friend, dedicated student, and a genuine and humble human being. Just spent a weekend of intense training with Sifu Peder and his students. As a fellow Sifu in our Kung Fu organization, I would like to say how happy I am for anyone fortunate enough to learn Ving Tsun ("Wing Chun") with this man as a guide.

This school has a great location just in Dundee I have been training here for years and I'm amazed at how much there is to learn and the practical applications of Kung Fu principles in daily life.

As a former instructor and student of eight years here I can say that the criticisms here, while harsh at times, are valid. It is obvious that some of the critics are former seniors, and at least one other is a former instructor.

The Moy Yat system is better than some, but considerably inferior to others , such as the Wong Shun Leung lineage in general, and the Gary Lam schools in particular.

This school perverts Chinese traditions to both extract additional money from students, and flip the focus from the student building a solid skill set, to an inappropriate reverence for the teacher as a father figure.

Unfortunately, the best wing chun training in Omaha is in the form of satellite clubs operating out of schools in Kansas City and Des Moines. Hopefully one of them will hang a shingle as a school soon.

15 years ago this school was strong, but the Sifu just quit showing up regularly. All of the students who could actually fight left long ago as they didn't want to pay $100 a month to teach class without any real option of becoming a Sifu themselves.
Peder (the Sifu who will despise being named here) will never appear in a photo or video, and usually doesn't do anything for a demo when new students arrive. He has fallen out of favor with the Moy Yat lineage as he prefers to speak negatively about the most senior person in his lineage (Moy Tung) and this has led to far fewer training opportunities for his students.
He has TOLD STUDENTS he will NEVER TEACH THE WEAPONS. So, if you start getting good, he'll use your "patience" against you to plateau your progress. And this is not traditional... In tradition, you respect your seniors and teach people at their level.
Everyone currently training here has trouble answering even basic questions about fighting, and hide behind a thin veil of zen mystique. Most of the good reviews are from a 5+ years ago. I have no idea where all the new negative reviews are coming from, but I can tell you that there are a ton of former students who will never come back, so they are mostly legitimate.
I have held my tongue out of martial respect. But I now realize that I don't want people wasting time and money, and thinking this is how 'traditional' wing chun works. This is how a lawyer obfuscating his intent works.
Given all of these problems, it's juvenile that the Sifu blames all students and the public's capacity to train traditionally. Martial arts are huge in the USA and especially Omaha, and anyone reading these reviews or paying money WANTS to train. They just don't want to do the same repetitive thing for months with no oversight. Without a Sifu present, drama is far too common without any real resolution. Senior students will quit training with you and put you on mock-trial if you say something they find offensive and sacrilege. It's cowardly. If you're new and ask the wrong questions, they might ignore you for months.
The website claims you can be an expert in 3 years. Not here, and you'll never get the weapons, which imply expertise...
The Sifu here grew frustrated when his grandmaster trained some of his students in the pole form. He told them NOT TO PRACTICE IT when parallel Moy Yat schools had much newer students training it. This shutting down of learning is too common here. Just go back to slap blocking the next 10 years like a good traditionalist... If you happen to miss the one unpredictable night a month Sifu shows up... Oh well, that's your fault.
This place had a ton of potential, and I consider it's current anemic status a tragedy.

For those doubting wing chun and the moy yat school this is the least waste of my time and money traditional and unmodified and is not for everyone obviously those without proper patience or knowledge of wing chun if you want to learn real kung fu for the right reason highly recommended

1- Be ready to train for a year with little or no footwork.
2- A strange hips forward and shoulders back stance makes movement more difficult and destroys your takedown defense.
3- Slavish devotion to centerline theory creates a weakness to hooks and shovel hooks.
4- All of the teaching centers around theory and tradition. Nobody, including the teacher, looks to have any ring or street experience.
5- Worst of all is "lucky money" cash gifts to the teacher despite an abdication of proper teaching for a "journey of discovery" approach, and students not only buying the teacher meals, but playing a nonsense game where they don't allow the teacher to even see the money. Very cultish and odd.

Save your $100/month for a place that will focus on practical combat skills.

Don't believe the haters. When I was new in Omaha, I had a hard time fitting in. I met a girl, but started getting beat up by her exboyfriend. It turns out that he went to a local karate school.

A short time later, I found the Moy Yat school. The school sifu taught me so I could defend myself from the bully and his friends. After a year of training, doing forms on one leg, buying him specialty coffees and donuts, and giving him cash presents on top of tuition, I had the chance to show what I learned in a martial arts tournament.

During the tournament, one of the bully's friends kicked me with an illegal kick and injured me. The tournament medic said I couldn't continue, but my sifu healed me with his kung fu demon magic. I was able to return to the tournament and face off against the bully for the trophy, and beat him with a special kick that I was taught.

I got the girl, and the trophy, and new found respect from the bully and his friends.

They stress forms and stationary training. Footwork is awful, range control work is no more than forward rush into clinch range. Not for practical self defense unless you're defending yourself against pogues.
Then there's a cultish vibe, and giving cash tips to the teacher when he teaches you something new. Huge McDojo.

I do not recommend training here if you want to learn martial skill. Application is not taught, and the Sifu is rarely around. You pay a premium price for sub par basics. Do not be fooled by these CHARLATANS. Save your money and time. There are other options.

Sorry for my unprofessional user name. I've been training for a year and a month now. O what a wonderful ride it has been. I have seen the transition from one school location to the next. Everyone who trains there are really friendly and they train with positive energy that just really brighten the atmosphere.
The Sifu is just amazing, very professional, he knows all 6 forms, and gives us very "eye-opening lectures" that have really helped improve our kung fu, even for the instructors. It's great to train with energy, and not go through the motions and/or do it "the lazy way."
Though the process of getting opened up to forms and drills are quite slow, It's because they give you lots of time to improve your kung fu and actually be adequate enough to get opened up to something. I know definitely need to work on some things.

My only one major problem with the school is sometimes forgetting to go there. Happy New Years!

I train here. It really is an amazing school. The lessons are taught in the family style and the group of guys who train all really interesting. Different ages, different walks of life, different ideas, it is a great place to learn, workout and have fun.

First lesson is free too, so stop by.

I went for the first time, First off I am glad to find a Wing Chun school in Omaha NE, It was super cool I took my little one we had a good time, The were holding back on skills we could learn but I understand we were not members yet, but I'll be back.... YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

October 24, 2017 15:01

I was active in the school for about 5 years and attended classes, on average, about twice a week. The family-style teaching was perfect for me, and the lack of competition/testing/belts/sporting was also a good match for me. You can learn at your own pace, to a degree, and you will learn very valuable skills that have an effect in and out of the classroom. I encourage you to try it for 3-6 months to see what you think. While it may seem like you have to practice Pak Sao and Pak Dar forever, keep at it. Everything in the system builds upon itself, and you can study the nuances for as long as you study kung fu. In a relatively short period of time, a dedicated student can achieve a high level of skill in ving tsun.

Right now, I'm not actively training, but am still connected to the school, my kung fu family, and my sifu, and plan on this being a part of my life in varying degrees for a long time to come.

Wow, these guys train hard! Their attitudes are good too. I was amazed by their levels of skill. New people have to start at the basics, but the senior guys are clearly excellent at fighting but free of ego issues. I highly recommend!
