I had the privilege to learn under Mr. Chichon back in 2009 ish. He is one of th best striking coaches I've ever met... If my boss didn't tell me to quit I'd have continued training
Years later, I'm back at the Cellar for BJJ classes and am absolutely loving it. The best BJJ classes I've taken in Minneapolis.
I signed a year contract and am committed to staying as long as possible. Beyond black belt if my own martial arts school will Allow.
Chris and his wife Jen own one of the best adult martial arts programs I've experienced
Awesome place with awesome people! Have been coming here for Muay Thai for a few months now, and couldn't recommend a better spot!
I have been taking classes at The Cellar for the past year and a half and I absolutely love this place! Such a wonderful community of coaches and members who welcome and support everyone. I had no prior martial arts experience before coming here. I had been primarily doing kickboxing but I started Muay Thai four months ago and it was the best decision ever! Totally recommend this gym to folks at all levels of martial arts. :)
I only had about a month and a half of Kickboxing classes before I moved from my apartment to a different location. In that time I felt that I learned so much and got so strong. Every time I catch a look at my new muscle tone I wonder "Where did that come from?" The teachers were so informative and helpful and I really felt like I have gained some useful skills in a short time. If I ever move close-by again I would 100% go back.
I recently completed a 6 week fitness challenge with nutrition, coaching support and kickboxing classes. my motivation was to reset to a healthier lifestyle and regain some discipline in how i approach diet and exercise. the coaches at the cellar took the time to push me to meet my goals in the gym, and hold myself accountable to the plan outside the gym. thanks to this program I'm well on my way to my weight loss goals and have improved my conditioning, fitness and diet drastically. the classes are something different every time, always challenging to all levels of experience. the instructors make sure to offer tips to improve form and prevent injury. I've enjoyed getting to meet some new faces, all very friendly and welcoming to new students. thanks especially to coaches Justin, Ben, Chris and Katie for challenging me and helping me achieve a healthier lifestyle!
Recently, I completed the 6 week challenge, which gave me the motivation to come back and start attending classes again. For the challenge we were to attend kickboxing classes 3 times a week. Originally I was signed up for Muay Thai, as I found it to be an interesting art, but after the challenge, I found I enjoyed the kickboxing a lot and signed up for that instead.
I was worried about finding time to attend, but they have so many classes on their schedule that I can always find a class that matches my schedule, no matter how much my schedule changes week to week. While I worked the fair, I was able to attend morning classes. When I went back to my normal work schedule they had a class almost every night of the week.
The coaches are absolutely phenomenal. Being that there are so many classes, there are also a few coaches, and they all teach their classes differently, while still changing it up from class to class. Not only are you getting a satisfying workout, but you are getting a variety that promises you'll never get bored.
As for the people, they are all very friendly. Although I attend classes alone, there is always somebody to practice with. Often we end up pairing up, and if you didn't bring a friend you'll have to make a new friend. I have not had one bad experience with all of the people I have worked with. As great as a place is, if the people aren't friendly, then it basically becomes a chore to attend. I actually find myself looking foward to attending classes and meeting new people.
Overall, I would highly recommend taking a look at this gym. The classes are great and flexible; the coaches are knowledgable and helpful; and the people are extremely friendly.
This was the second boxing or martial arts school that I've tried out and it is by far the best so far. The facility is always clean and has a ton of space for their classes. I believe there's a new heavy bag room they'll be opening up soon as well.
The staff members are all friendly and approachable and the coaches are top notch. I took most of my classes over the past 6 weeks with Ben and they were always challenging and fun! If you're at all interested in taking martial arts classes I'd highly recommend trying the Cellar out!
Amazing gym with excellent instructors and overall a great environment. Customer service is fantastic and everyone that trains there makes it feel like a family.

Great training environment: friendly people who are serious about learning technique and careful to practice safely. Very reasonably priced.

Relaxed, professional and helpful. The facilities are well maintained and clean, and the classes are challenging and fun. So far, this is my favorite gym- hands down.
Just went for the first time. Definitely coming back. Good people and friendly vibe. Clean, lots of variety.
Jus went for my second day. I loved the muay thai class and kickboxin. After my trial is over im signing up.
I was only a member of The Cellar for about 9 months, and only stopped going because I'm moving out of state. I love it there and I recommend it to people all the time. This is an email I wrote to the owners:
Hey Chris and Jen,
I just wanted to let you know how great of an experience I had at the Cellar over the last 9 months. If I wasn't moving out of state, I'd be a long term member for sure.
I love the way your gym is a place where members can take their training seriously and work out as intensely as they want, while maintaining an atmosphere that is open and comfortable for all types of people, including a hack like me. I never once witnessed any acts of disrespect between members, or even any negative attitudes at all. It doesn't feel wishy washy or too soft either, though. Everyone takes it seriously, works really hard, and enjoys it. I think that says a lot about your leadership and the culture you've developed there.
I believe that the quality of your coaching is absolutely top notch. Not only are you sticklers for technique (which I need), but I also received far more personalized coaching at the Cellar than I did at my previous thai boxing gyms. It was great to get specific instruction that responded to exactly what I was doing well and what I needed to fix.
Anyway, I'll miss The Cellar a lot, and I hope I can find a new gym that's half as good as yours.
Thanks for everything,
Peter
