Love this location. The new staff is so friendly. They also keep a very clean club with equipment that works well!

This location is very well-maintained, clean and inviting. The variety and quality of the equipment is top rate and the ability to use every inch of the gym allows members to explore each one of them!

I love how inclusive the YWCA dance exercise groups are. There is every fitness level, age, race-all are welcome. I have found members and staff to be very supportive. This is my first experience joining a gym. I am so glad that I joined the YWCA midtown facility. I feel good every time I step through the door.

I tried cancelling my membership in March as I needed to leave the state and was unable to cancel until back in Minneapolis in August. I went back in person and cancelled the membership in August and was just charged AGAIN for another month of fees. Do not trust this company. I needlessly got charged for April, May, June, July, and August. The facilities are nice but at $70 per person, these membership fees are outrageous and customer service is as well.

Daycare is all about having fun and learning! My nephew certainly enjoys his time at the midtown YWCA daycare.

This gym has a lot of good things going for it. Their track is definitely the strongest asset, as it's the largest indoor one in the Twin Cities! Their hours are quite accommodating as they are open all the way until 10:30pm every weeknight (technically it's 11 but they basically start kicking people out a half hour early) and only close 90 minutes earlier on the weekends. Their pool has several lanes open for lap swimming and it's not too hard to get in. Unfortunately, this place gets very busy on the weekends (particularly Saturday mornings) with sporting events and other things. As others have said, parking here has been an issue historically (no surprise given that they host a separate sporting center for the city of Minneapolis and people often park where they shouldn't). It sounds like they are going to start charging people to ensure enough supply. This idea almost makes sense except that now the problem will probably get pushed out into the neighborhoods. Corcoran isn't like Uptown, so I'm guessing the streets will absorb it just fine, but the neighbors will probably be confused.

I'm going to cancel my membership since I'm going to pay for parking!
That's not right! Members doesnt have to pay for parking . We already pay for membership!

AUGUST 2018: I absolutely CANNOT BELIEVE that you are dealing with the parking problem by making members PAY for parking! We already pay for our memberships, I am SO ANGRY that you are making me ALSO pay for damn parking. There HAS TO BE another solution, such as giving members cards that will open a parking gate. BUT THIS IS NOT OKAY! I may well cancel my stupid membership now. I cannot afford an additional cost just to park at the gym where I ALREADY PAY FOR MY MEMBERSHIP. This is going to drive people away, mark my words, and I may well be one of them.

I have been a member for over 3 years. For the last 3 months they have been redoing the lockers rooms and I have been told that they will be finish in 2 weeks, but I now have a new problem starting September 1, 2018 we will have to pay to park. It is a game changer. Parking has always been bad because of people parking there that don't belong to the Y. So I will probably be dropping my membership. I will miss lots of other members who I have become friends with, but even at 1 dollar a day that is 20. dollars a month. Not worth it in my book.

This gym listens and responds to feedback and I think that is a fantastic attribute. I put in a comment that the kettlebells were unorganized and I never knew what the spectrum of weights were due to this. It frankly made my workout unpleasant trying to sort through these weights and find the appropriate weight. After I put this comment in I came back to a system that color coordinated the different weights and grouped them together. This has made my workout so much less frustrating. Yes, there are things here and there that the gym could improve, but overall I'm happy with the facility. I would encourage anyone with issues to submit a comment card to have the issue addressed.

Participated in a basketball tournament at their facility....FYI they don't allow you to use their parking lot!!!
My advice, if you're an AAU club looking for tournaments, dontd waste your money on any that use this facility!

Okay, I want to give this place 4.5 stars, but that's not an option, I'm going to err on the high side.

Positives: Bodies of all shapes, sizes, genders, ages, colors, and abilities. As a person of size, I was super intimidated at the idea of going to a gym. But I didn't feel judged or out of place. Including standing on the pool deck.

Everyone one on staff is very polite and tends to 'stay in their lane,' but is generally friendly when you approach them. For me, that's perfect. If you're someone who wants staff who initiate small talk and approach you instead of waiting for you to approach them, you might find them a little distant. Again, for me personal, having some mental space is a feature, not a bug. (note: this doesn't apply to kid care staff, I don't have kids)

I feel more connected to my community since I joined. That's sort of an intangible positive, and I can't even really explain why, but it's a nice feeling.

They've taken steps to try and make sure there's always parking for members, as there's a volunteer who monitors incoming traffic to make sure everyone has their parking permit. I've gone on the weekends and never had a problem with parking.

Okay, now the handful of negatives: I have a really hard time finding out information. There's no new member handbook (that I was given), and while I did do the new member orientation, and got a guided tour before I joined, I still felt like I didn't know all the "rules," or even some of the potential services (long term locker rental? I think that's a thing, but I can't find any actual info.) I'm sure asking would answer some of my questions... but I wish the information was available in print.

Okay, now, the big (but admittedly temporary) thing: The locker rooms. As of May 29th 2018, the actual locker rooms have been closed for remodel. I understand why, and I'm sure I (and everyone else) will be super happy when the remodel's finished, but in the mean time... the workaround is... not good. Temporary changing rooms have been set up in the sports arena. There's less privacy than usual, even for a locker room, and no "all gender" changing area. The solution for anyone who might need an "all gender" changing area (whether it be a family of mixed ages and genders, or an individual who isn't comfortable in the binary option) is two divided off rooms, only accessible by going -through- the mens or women's changing area. The changing area is separate from the bathroom and shower area. The shower area only has two stalls that are barely usable. There is water everywhere in the bathroom from the swimmers, which I'm sure is maddening to the basketball players trying to use the toilet, ending up with wet court shoes. The changing rooms are physically as far from the pool as you can get. So if you're a swimmer, you're parading through the entire sports arena in your swimsuit.

All of that would be tolerable, for a month. But this remodel is slated to finish August 31st! 3 months! I'm hoping like heck that that is the 'worse case scenario' timeline, and that it'll actually be done in a month.

I did, 100%, know this going in, though it was poorly communicated to longer time members (many were expressing shock the day of the change). It is temporary, and the locker rooms definitely needed a face lift. But if you're thinking of joining especially if you're a swimmer, I'd wait until August 31st. If you're reading this after August 31st, I'm sure the new locker rooms are beautiful, and you can disregard the warning.

I do really love this place, joining was a great decision. And I can't wait until we have some gorgeous new locker rooms!

Did a little research, liked the look of the place based on reviews and their website. Arrived on a Friday, to find that the hours on the door of the establishment do not match those on their website at all, and the place was closed. The store hours on Google also do not match the website, OR the signage on the door. How does a business survive if they can't be counted on to be open when they say they are?

I have been a member on and off for the past 10 years. I love almost all of their group classes & schedule options. I love knowing that no matter my work schedule, there will be a class I can take. What I dislike very much is the kids--I'm SORRY! but there are too many kids running around without parental supervision. Every time I canceled my membership it was due to this. I have complained many times to staff to require parents to be near their children especially in the weight rooms!!

Great staff especially at kids care, nice facilities and pool.

Got to say, i go to the gym for a reason. Everytime i go in, i get greet by nicely. Tonight, this african lady is just rude (it actually the second i saw her) no greeting, just a 'your a member' like seriously lady. If im not a member, would i be here tonight. Really dont know why she is still there. She totally forgot her manner as a employee. Everybody deserve the same respect.

I think it's important to understand that the Midtown YWCA is outstanding for residing in the inner-city. The YWCA gives back to the community more than all other work-out gyms combined (Might be an exaggeration). But that's why I love the YWCA and especially the YWCA Midtown.

Proud member since 2000

I am a long time member (in fact, a founding member ) of this facility. I love it dearly, especially working on the machines with so many different people from stylish yuppies to East African women with headscarves. It is fun to meet up with people of all ages and, for me in particular, to participate in excellent hatha yoga classes.

The facility is in need of some updates, but I trust that this will take place as the YW just updated the downtown facility.

And, BTW, the staff is great.

October 24, 2017 16:05

I've been a member of the YWCA for a long time now. But I'm finally moving out of the neighborhood, and so I've got a chance to write the full review. People comment a lot about how nice this gym is (for an "inner-city" gym), but I'm pretty sure that the YWCA would hemorrhage users if they had any actual competition in the area.

- The parking situation is terrible. They require the members to be fiddling with placards (and not something sane, like a sticker) to park in their lot. But it's a placebo placard; it's never enforced and events in the attached gym frequently crowd out membership parking with no repercussions.

- All of my favorite trainers have either left or are in the process of leaving. Why? They (along with the KidZone, front desk, and custodial staff) universally complain that the management is horrendous and that the pay is low. So many of my trainer friends have left for gyms that pay significantly better, leaving classes to be taught by inexperienced trainers.

- The locker rooms are disgusting, and should have been remodeled a decade ago. I see a lot of complaints about the men's room, but the women's is just as bad. The shower heads have terrible pressure and look like they haven't been updated since the 80's.

- The response cards are usually completely ignored. I've gotten a response to them *once*, out of the dozen or so that I've filled out over the years.

- The KidZone staff are constantly annoyed at how little management offers them. The pay isn't great, and they lack basic things that even tiny churches can afford, like a pager system to reach parents.

- Their pricing is impossibly opaque. It's not on their website; you basically have to go in and get the hard sell to find out the prices. I've even had *staff members* ask me how much I pay for my family membership. They require "30 days notice" to leave, for no apparent reason. It's a couple clicks in the computer to stop billing you, but the contracts are worded simply so they can bill you for an extra month. If you've paid for March and try to cancel at the beginning of the month? Too bad, you get to pay for all of April as well.

TL;DR:

Good: Great floor / front desk / KidZone staff.

Bad: Poorly managed, equipment is dated, parking is terrible, locker rooms are gross.
