In love with this gym!
Very affordable, very spacy and the different classes we can attend are really cool!

A gem of YMCA's. Open air setting of 3+ floors to find your space and type of workout. Updated amenities that rival mainstream brands. Urban core basketball is a feature for my activities. Really like in house towel service other YMCAs require cash to participate

You occasionally get rude staff like Walter that have absolutely no training on customer service. For the most part however, this is a nice gym, New equipment best ymca ive seen yet. Centrally located and close to eveything.

They now have a ymca in there so it makes it a great place to do a little shopping and get your work out on. This ymca is very nice it has very clean showers and very clean work out equipment. It's a huge ymca its 6 floors and they also have private changing rooms and a pool. Free towel service!! The lockers here come with those digital locks where you set the code so its very nice to be honest.

Very nice, very clean and modern.... Though the gym floor is very slippery when playing basketball, can use a good waxing....

Been going here since early summer. Im loving it so far. The classes and instructors are awesome! I'm a regular at their yoga classes and recently Barre. Absolutely love their rooftop. I got to enjoy it doing yoga this summer. Gotta try the pool and their powerhouse soon. Locker rooms are clean, towels and cleansing wipes are always stocked. They even have free coffee on weekends. I see myself being a member of this gym for a long time.

This is a really great location for the YMCA. I joined right before it opened, and used the previous location only briefly. This one is way better. The locker room is a little tight, and there are some details that sometimes seem to go by the wayside, but it's otherwise awesome.

I love this gym. Super clean, spacious, with lots of cardio equipment. The staff is friendly and helpful. It's a great location. There are tons of fun classes to take too. Oh, and you gotta see the rooftop!

The virtual reality bike is so cool. I love pretending that I am a horse when I bike! Lance Armstrong wouldn't have needed to dope for any of his Tour De France wins if he had this piece of equipment.

Single day guest pass to the Y is 80 dollars for a family. This ain't Disneyland or Six Flags. It is the Y!

The YMCA is open 111 hours per week and the Power House is used 30ish hours. YMCA if you were a person you would be a giant tanned elitist jerk with orange hair and a last name that rhymes with Dump! A battery only has so much energy to burn in a lifespan why waste it in a gym.

Don't be a cheap Lifetime Fitness. Try to actually promote wellness.

There is no way the design came from anyone that has ever worked out. I can prove it too. Just do a bunch of pull ups on the stupid Queenax which feels like a flexible gymnastics bar and shreds your hands. Need some more proof just watch Precor's demo video on YouTube of the Queenax. Do you think the fitness expert enjoys the same feeling on her hands at 7:08 in the video? No way would a Lifetime or any of the other chains go this low.

There also needs to be a pull-up bar installed in the northeast stretching area made of metal not plastic.

The pool is too hot. 77 deg to 82 deg is the range for swimming. Anything warmer feels like running a marathon in a sauna.

Thanks for removing the Pilates Allegro machines. The guy squatting 650 lbs isn't going to destroy his spine but me pulling myself on a slide will.

There is also no steam room which was pretty sweet and rare.

The YMCA recently moved (January 2018) from their LaSalle Avenue location :( . Member since 1990s when LaSalle location opened. Gavidae location offers lots of fitness equipment, virtual reality equipment (too much technology is bad for your health), a basketball court, group fitness (3 rooms, only one with suspended flooring), and pool. No raquetball, no indoor walk/run track. Ambience of a shopping center. Locker rental is 2.5x fee at old location, but towel service is now free. If you don't mind being thethered to a piece of equipment, you might enjoy the experience; if you power walk, climb stairs, do squats (gym is crowded) outdoors may be a better choice.

I was a long time Y member, but this was too much disrespect to someone who actually enjoys exercise. Cancellation was easy.

I think this is a beautiful space but no steam room and coed sauna is really a downer. Having both sauna and steam room in locker room for men and women is really what should have been considered. The equipment is great but the amenities are a great disappointment

I am super cool with the classes being in the Power House. I actually think they offer the best of both worlds. I don't appreciate that the YMCA is open 111 hours per week and the Power House is used 30ish hours. YMCA if you were a person you would be a giant elitist jerk with orange hair. Try just a little to be more inclusive. Sharing is caring.

YMCA MATHEMATICS is at about a 2nd grade comprehension level.
27 people use the 1st floor 3000 sq. Power House fitness room for a day.
725 people are forced to use 4th floors 2500 sq. Crapex pullup machine and 3 squat racks.

Upstairs 4th floor squat rack
4 people per hour at 3 sets each averaging 135 lbs on 10 reps.
Total weight lifted per day = 243,000 lbs (This is a super low estimate)
Powerhouse squat rack
0.1 people per hour at 3 sets each averaging 135 lbs on 10 reps.
Total weight lifted per day = 6,075 lbs (This is a high estimate)
How can you maximize square foot usage for the members? No one actually cares just ask the 50 plus board members living in Edina and Minnetonka.

Overall under utilization is cool if you have a one of kind pen with only so much ink, but if you are a non-profit organization that is meant to serve the community that is under utilized then you are just a crappy non-profit organization that is trying to be a cheap Lifetime Fitness.

Single day guest pass to the Y is 80 dollars for a family. This ain't Disneyland or Six Flags. It is the Y!

I also feel your class pricey is super deceptive. Classes starting at $12 even though the majority of the classes are at a different price. That is shady marketing.

MindBody- Any and every gym/fitness place uses this software. A gym worth about $10,000 dollars uses this software. The Y has about 320 million dollars in assets and can't spend 5 grand on a software to help people verify classes bought and used. Lame!

I love alternative medicine but gyms that don't have enough space are gyms without enough space. Why are you wasting space with the hydromassaging machines when you offer massages at your wellness center?

Also there is no way the design came from anyone that has ever worked out. I can prove it too. There also needs to be a pullup bar installed in the northeast stretching area if you want to open up the mini golf carpet stretching area.

They generally forgot the identity of what a gym represents and the core values of the YMCA. The new YMCA wants to be a boutique all in one gym which doesn't make sense. The YMCA can't compete with Core Power Yoga or The Bar Method or Fly Feet Running or any of those studios. The downtown location doesn't have to be family friendly but at least needs to be gym.

The reason why people gravitate towards boutique fitness is because the instructors are specialized. Having 90 plus classes a week seems like a great idea until you realize they are mostly just garbage. Would you rather have one good cookie or a million that taste like a toilet bowl?

The pool is too hot. 77 deg to 82 deg is the range for swimming. Anything warmer feels like running a marathon in a sauna.

The positives are there are free towels now and self check-in, but then again it is 2018. That is like offering me a mint after having to eat McDonalds. Gross!

My recommendation if you don't have a YMCA membership is to just do "The Murph" 3 days a week.

How is your sweet turf roof? Is that for special events and special member and special....It's the Y, I say that in a low monotone voice with my head down and depressed.

Pros: New and unique layout. Great downtown views.
Cancellation is super easy. You can cancel at their service desk up front and they do it for you no questions asked. Monthly memberships.

Cons: Sales people who help you with the tour don't help you learn how to use the locker combinations. Yes, I followed the directions on the sign, but locker still wouldn't open.

Not nearly enough strength machines available. One of the main reason I cancelled membership.

Workout rooms/classes are way too small to accommodate for a busy downtown crowd. Not enough room to actually MOVE your body. They just make you jump up and down a lot in the classes. Can't do any actual interesting or challenging exercises due to too many people and too small of a room.

The fitness classes I tried there were really boring and totally unfulfilling. Usually after a really good fitness class I always feel energized and stronger right after and for the following days. The classes at the YMCA does not provide the right kind of training, you do not feel stronger or healthier after their classes.

No track available to run around. Considering that the space is an oval, I'm really surprised they didn't include a track on their 3rd floor. Would've been the perfect fit. Duh.

Guess it's back to Lifetime Fitness for me instead!

The new location looks amazing, but the amount of space to exercise as well as the number of machines has been drastically reduced. I can get twice as much space with much fewer people for half the price at LA Fitness, which I would except they don't have a downtown location.

March 14, 2018 10:41

Disappointed in the new location. The space seems to have been designed by a committee that has never lifted a weight. It feels like you are working out in an airport or suburban mall. Weight and machine placement is awkward and crucial spaces are cramped. There are lots of bells and whistles that nobody uses like the virtual reality machines. There are dozens of offices and conference rooms but no track, no racquetball, no steam room and half the number of lanes in the pool as in the old location. The management appears enamoured of its marketing campaign and in its effort to be all things to all people has lost sight of its core membership. Less social justice commentary and more space to actually work out.

Very friendly staff ! Has a jogging track that I love. Very good facilities

Correction: the jogging track was in the old facility. The YMCA at gavidae doesn't seem to have a jogging track

February 16, 2018 06:18

It's a bit disorienting to find your way throught the 5 or 6 floors of the place, but they've got good equipment and cool locker rooms.

UPDATE: this review was for the previous location. There new one is very chic and urban, but there's no running track. Pool is small. I'm upset by what kind of focus was placed on on the machines for this new one.

February 13, 2018 20:15

I self toured the facility last Saturday. Very nice. I like how the check in is set up. Can't wait to check out the roof top deck. Only thing is idk if it was a good idea to have the locker rooms on a separate floor from the pool unless there is another locker room where the pool is but that area was not open yet when I toured. Overall very nice facility

February 12, 2018 22:35

Stunning new facilities! They're incorporating new technologies in the most fascinating ways, from competitive heart rate tracking to VR training. Gorgeous locker rooms and studios. And I hear a rooftop track is in the works!

February 11, 2018 10:30

The new location is very convenient, well maintained, and has a good variety of equipment and classes. I am giving it 4 stars as in the morning you have to use the far left door in the 6th Street entrance as all the other doors are locked. It's a great solution but as far as I can tell the communication about this solution is poor. Put it on the website and on the automated phone system so people know about it.

January 3, 2018 11:52

Came here for a swimming class. Very nice pool, and my instructors the first two weeks were great, but the girl who did the remaining weeks was not helpful, and I didn't learn or improve at all after the first two weeks. Kept hoping it would be one of the others, but I had her the rest of the time. Someone teaching a more specific (triathlon) class should be more knowledgeable, attentive, and prepared. I paid far too much for something I could have done on my own.
