I signed up for a Barre Burn class on 1/27/18 about a week ahead of time. I was excited to try this studio. Upon arrival, however, I was told that I could not participate in the class because there was another person in the class who, based on her religious beliefs, did not want any men in the class. This was not a women-only class and I was not notified about this ahead of time. I was not offered any apologies, no class rescheduling, nor any make-up classes. I could, however, sit outside and chat with the person at the front desk while my girlfriend and our mutual friend participated in the class.
I felt humiliated, embarrassed, and excluded. I'm sure this studio values things like inclusion, diversity, and tolerance, so it's ironic that this studio discriminates based on gender. It has dissuaded me from doing barre in the future and from going outside my comfort zone. I'm disappointed that gender discrimination continues to occur and hope that our society can do better than this.
