What you need, where you need it.
For a downtown gym this place is convenient in location and attributes.
It is a large gym with plenty of space to navigate equipment. Locker rooms are adequate, showers generally clean.
The gear here is more traditional, meaning if you're looking for cross fit, this is not the place. There is ample equipment for weight training and cardio training.
It does get busy after work, but what gym doesn't? Sure, Equinox may boast of less crowds, but there is a reason - not enough equipment to draw a bigger crowd.
LAF has enough equipment for "most" hours of the day. I don't know if any gym can scale for just the busy after work hours - can't imagine it would be financially feasible. Think the Kennedy Expressway during rush hour. Sure you can build six more lanes each way to make traffic flow better, but at what cost for the other 21 hours of the day?
There are slobs at the gym, for sure, like every gym, and sometimes the cleaning staff cannot keep up. I can say with confidence the morning cleaning staff work tirelessly to keep the place clean. They do an outstanding job. I cannot speak to the night staff, but based on how the place looks in the morning, I'd probably have a different opinion of them than I do of the morning staff.
There can be a line for the shower in the morning, and during certain periods of the year every piece of cardio equipment can be occupied, and at times you probably won't be able to find a bench - but that is all transient and no worse than any of the other six gyms to which I have belonged.
Overall this is a better value than Equinox, Lake Short (about a block away), and FFC, though FFC is your only choice for a 24 hour club in this area. X-Sport is also a 24 hour gym but they are South Loop, these other clubs are "downtown".
When you come in to sign up, make a deal, don't settle for offer price. If you go on the right day of the week you can get a deal you might not get otherwise.
