I worked in Bucktown last year when I decided to sign up at Verge after their sales associates came into my work location nonstop for a month. I decided to go over and check it out and found a trainer to work with on some of my fitness goals. Before I signed up, I asked many questions about the membership, cancellation, personal training, etc. I've gone to big box gyms and had terrible experiences in the past so I like to cover my bases. I also knew that I would not likely be staying in the neighborhood since my job tends to move me around, so I made sure to ask about cancellation. I was told by Harold Coleman, the gym manager, that I could cancel at anytime and it was only $50. Well, 7 mos later, I need to cancel. I emailed the billing department and was informed that in order to cancel, I have to move more than 25 miles away or have a medical condition. Since this was not what I was told, I went back to speak to Harold about it, and he claimed that there was nothing he could do and it's in the contract. The way they get people to sign up is incredibly dishonest. I take responsibility for not reading the contract, but sales people, and especially the gym manager should be forthcoming and upfront with relevant information. Additionally, i referred 2 people during their Black Friday special and was promised a discounted rate that I have not gotten. This is no way to do business. I liked this gym until this experience. They do not take ownership of misinformation and will clearly say whatever in order to get you to sign up. Gyms should care about their customers- seeing as how they're supposed to be there to help people be happier and healthier.
