It's a great community and facility! The club is clean and has so many programs/events. Tennis, fitness, and social all in one membership!

The weight area is too small and they are missing critical equipment such as a calf raise machine and dedicated tricep dip station. They devote too much space to group exercise rooms, flashy restaurant, oversized sitting area, and golf simulators, so there is not enough for a proper weight room layout.

More spa club than gym, love the peloton bikes and other high end equipment, lots of classes, sauna and steam room, and bar and restaurant has healthy and delicious smoothies and food

This club has everything, but there are way too many kids in the pool and basically no control over them. If they ever get around to building the rumored family pool, so that there's finally an adult only pool, it'll be the best club on the city by far. Until then, I can't go over 3 stars.

Edit: in response to the owner's response - it's the outdoor pool that has too many kids and there is no schedule. There's only 10-15 min adult swim each hour. The indoor pool has scheduled kids classes, but that's not where people want to hang out; it's lane swimming and not overrun with kids. So to clarify, they need to sort out the situation with the kids in the OUTDOOR pool.

The Midtown Athletic Club was a lot of fun. Over 500,000 square feet of space to do (or at least practice) pretty much any sport you can imagine. From crossfit to boxing, and weightlifting to swimming, toy can do it all. The place also has a hotel upstairs which I stayed at that was beautiful. This is a definite best kept secret in Chicago.

I was recently a guest at Midtown and was extremely impressed by the facilities and all the activities taking place but mostly it was the sincerity of the staff that made me feel most welcome...

Beautiful state of the art facility with all the amenities. You feel like your on a cruise ship. But very expensive membership. Not meant for blue collar workers with a family to supprt

The club is beautiful. Especially the outdoor pool which was very crowded. The noise was the problem. They pipe in music from 5 AM until 11 PM. The music along with the weights woke me up at 5 every morning. That was after a night of hearing every person in the hallway and every door shutting all night long. They did not think about how sound carries when they put the hotel rooms in the club.the road noise was also a problem. I paid way too much money to not be able to sleep

My wife and I joined Midtown a few months before the completion of the renovations. We were looking for a beautiful gym, with a nice pool and hot tub, and really were happy to pay luxury prices for that luxury feeling. And Midtown has completed a beautiful renovation. The equipment is great, the facade is beautiful, the wrist bands and locker rooms are very smart and easy. It is a beautiful gym; however, we feel like we are at a luxury YMCA. It is absolutely designed for families. The pool is flooded with kids, swim lessons, swim teams, swim camps. My wife expressed how important swimming 4-5 days a week is, and they told us about how their would always be designated swim lanes, but that is just not the case. And I love kids, but I am not paying nearly $300 a month to be splashed by kids while i'm trying to work out. Or waiting for a swim lane because they are taken by kids playing games. I also do not want to listen to screaming kids while I am relaxing in the hot tub. And no one is managing this. Honestly, our biggest gripe is that we feel duped. It is fine to be a gym that caters to families, but make that very, very clear to people who are signing up. We are now stuck in a contract that they refuse to let us out of. We will absolutely be leaving as soon as our contract is up. And had they worked with us to find a solution, and given some validation to our concerns, which are felt by many people who do not have kids (and even some with kids) -- we would be recommending them to families, but they have been pretty useless since we first expressed our concerns, and that is reason enough to never recommend this gym. After reading other reviews on other sites about midtown I can see that this is a global issue that they are choosing to ignore. Good luck Midtown, but I strongly suggest you take your money elsewhere.

The gym is nice, albeit delivered late. But this place is way overpriced. The weights equipment area is small given how big the facility is. I have referred several people and all walked away saying its too expensive. And they nickel and dime you for everything. $4 per hour for parking!!

They sell you on, come and hang out, take a meeting, work out, eat lunch...but then institutes a $4 per hour parking fee when you stay a while. $180 a month for single membership is outrageous. $30 an hour for golf simulator. $4/hr for parking. $40 men's haircut. $50 for lunch for two.

And you have to deal with the fact that it is also a hotel. The trainers are good, but the training manager will interrupt your very expensive session to tell your trainer they aren't wearing the right shirt or enough flare.

You are a cash machine for this place, they don't care about the members. Also, they run slow R&B jams on the overhead speaker, which sucks to work out to. This place could be great if it were run better. The GM Brad Houx needs to be fired and someone with some sense put into that role. I just canceled my membership. Parking at a gym you pay a premium monthly membership for is not a perk.

The group Junior's tennis lessons are complete waste of money, unless you are looking for babysitting on tennis court.

There are 8+ children per coach, very rarely less. The coaches barely teach the kids anything. They warm up for 15 minutes with just running between lines. Our kid was more than a year with them and by age of 8 he has never practiced overhead serve with them yet! Only once we saw a coach actually show them, but never after. The kids would play rally for 45 min and since nobody knows how to hit a ball it was a rare treat just to see a rally lasting 2 balls! Forget about practicing forhand or backhand. The coaches never hand a ball to the kids, never try to attend a single kid for a minute or so to help them. The coaches actually don't do anything, it is painful to watch them standing next to struggling kids! Once I counted how many times my kid hit during the lesson - it was 38 balls!! Thirty eight! Because there were 10 children and they all miss when they start a rally, and they then run to switch sides on the net, and then they go to the cart to get a new ball and by the time your kid hits another ball - 2 minutes passed!

You better show your child YouTube tutorial how to play tennis - they would learn more than with the group lessons at Midtown.

We moved our kid to another tennis club, where there are 3-4 kids per coach, where kids practice serve for 15 minutes, and footwork with forhand and backhand, and the coaches participate in a rally by handing balls when kids miss and explaining what to do differently with the next ball. Our child started loving tennis after 1 lesson. You will not see that with your child in Midtown - unless you pay $100+ for private lesson, and $100+ montly membership for child only, and few more tens of dollars to reserve the court...

The gym is wonderful, the classes are wonderful. I've referred family members to mid-town... and am starting to regret doing so. My concern is that the sales/membership arm of Midtown is either very deceitful or just incompetent. The interactions I've had left me feeling mislead, unappreciated and overcharged. I just wish they cared as much about members as they do membership dues.

To date, I've dealt with Bill S. & Rick F..
I met with Bill S. to sign up. He promised that my my single membership could be converted to a couple's membership when my wife's current gym membership ended without any initiation fee, so long as she did so within 1 year of sign up. Based on this representation, I joined Midtown. When I sought to take Bill up on his offer, I was unable to reach him. I then spoke with Rick F.
Rick F. informed me that there was a $250 upgrade charge for my wife and that we'd be receiving a "discounted" couple's rate. Apparently, this change in procedures was buried in an email sent around the holidays - and that he didn't care about the prior promises made at sign up. He didn't realize that friends of ours were offered the same monthly rate AND paid no initiation/upgrade fee earlier that week. Based on this information, I knew Rick was insufficiently empowered to offer discounts previously promised to us or unaware of what rates were being offered.
During our Sunday AM conversation, Rick was extremely combative and refused to so much as address the inconsistencies in the message I'd received - instead, referring me immediately to his manager. For someone whose job it is to attract/retain membership, he seemed awfully disinterested in current customer satisfaction.
We're still debating if we will upgrade our membership, fees and all, but the lack of attention to customer satisfaction has been frustrating. Midtown made a bunch of promises to get our business, but then has failed to follow-through on them

The overall club is great but they need to work on the food and the restaurant. The burger I got had no taste and was kinda dry. The ham panini was dry and had no flavor and the tomatoes were gross.

Holly crab this facility is great! I wish I could give 10 stars to this gym. I want to live there. Lol

February 15, 2018 12:05

Amazing club since the renovation. Offers swimming, fitness, tennis, spa, restaurant and much more! One of the more elite clubs in Chicago. Family friendly. Would recommend to a friend over any other club or gym in Chicago

Definitely an upscale urban sports resort! Very nice facilities and friendly services. Great for family, as the place has Kidstown Area where you can drop off your children. Big indoor Olympic lap pool and an outside lounge pool. Love the restaurant, however exclusively for resort guests and club members. Huge tennis courts and they offer so many different classes!

Great place! Even better after the remodeling and additional areas! Great tennis courts. Nice place to spend the weekend with family

My family and I have been members here since all the construction. It's been disappointing so far. Everything is over priced (literally everything). You can get a bottle of water anywhere for less than over $3, all pastries are $5, and spa services are the worst. There isn't even a decent, casual restaurant to hang out and dine. The menu is terrible! They're not changing the menu despite the fact that I haven't heard one member say they like. It's too small to service the entire club and it's still half empty at the busiest times, that's how bad it is...also very, very overpriced. Even the brunch menu is bad.
The facilities are nice as far as working out. I would be blasting the kids club for making us make reservations to use it but they're fixing that...beware though, it is geared towards little kids. Once a kid hits 6 years old they start to outgrow it. We have to set our 8 year old up in a sitting area with a tablet these days...not great.
We're going to give it one full summer to see if the outdoor pool makes it worthwhile but having it for the end of last warm season gave us the impression that it will be way overcrowded.

This is a great place, where if you want to do maps, you can while your kids are in the kid pool having a great time. Or if you want to do workouts but you have nowhere to bring your kid, you can drop them off at kidtown (in the new building) or if you just want to play tennis, golf and so much more. There is also a very nice kids menu, and a variety of chooses on the regular menu. I do have to say that the food there is kind of expensive. Overall it is a great place to be. 5 stars!!

I'm a current member of midtown athletic club, for one more day. Don't walk away from this place, run. They're liars and they conduct shady business practices.

We joined the club during construction over a year ago. We were told our rates wouldn't go up, that they were locked. We were also told that the parking in the garage would always remain free to members. We would have never joined without this incentive. The workout facilities were absolutely awful during the construction, totally inadequate. Well, they just notified us a month ago that our rates were going up by 25% and that we would eventually start paying for parking. I emailed and called the GM, after much discussion we came to a compromise. We were going to give it a shot, to see what the new club had to offer when construction was finished. He told me to get back to him, so I did a few days later. No response after a month and two emails. My wife also emailed looking for information but received no response. There are many other members that are complaining and haven't received responses to their emails.

This place is a money grab, guilty of the old bait and switch. Do not join. I am very disappointed I fell for their lies and that I wasted over a year training in such an awful facility.

October 19, 2017 06:34

trying to join this club has been a complete nightmare. Staff is rude, GM & CEO don't return calls. The club looks like it'll be nice (when it finally opens) but this is a company that clearly doesn't care about their customers. Stay away.

October 19, 2017 06:34

Midtown is my happy place. The staff is so amazing and they have really tried their hardest to keep everything running smoothly during construction.

I was a guest for yoga class with knowledgeable teacher and tasty lunch. Beautiful building, excellent facility.

The club is awesome! Really appreciate my trainer (Neal) and the hard work he puts into my weekly training! Spin is awesome!
