I joined a few years ago after Fitness 4K shut down. L.A. is closer to me, but didn't like the atmosphere or equipment. The $15 "purple" chain is a joke. So unless you're looking to spend huge on a boutique or semi-private gym (or need access to a nationwide network for frequent travel), Edge is the best choice around. Other members are friendly, are there to work out, with minimal meathead roid vibe.
(I should say that my prejudice favors a large selection of free weights, benches, racks, because that's what I use. I've never done a single group class, and think tanning is... unwise, but nice that they're included.)
The cons: Yes, can be crowded at peak times, but learn to work with/around others or during off-peak hours and you'll be fine. It's not your private gym, after all. Maintenance is a bit lax. It's super annoying to hunt for another open cable station for want of a $10 snap shackle, for example. They don't allow chalk. In a gym. With barbells. Where members come to lift. Yes, can sneak it in if you're discreet and don't make a mess, but it's a silly policy nonetheless (though not nearly as silly as that purple gym's deadlift moratorium).
