I absolutely love this place!
I started jiu jitsu about 8 months ago and am so happy I started at Gracie Barra. Being so new to something as technical as BJJ made it hard for me to want to jump in and try it. However my experience at Gracie Barra with Professor Rodrigo and his coaches has been amazing. You can tell they really care about you and it shows in their committment to your success and dedication to the arts. If you are reading this and considering starting just come in for a free introductory lesson. GB Santa Barbara has seriously impacted my life in a positive way and I have no doubt it will do the same for you.
I started my jiu-jitsu journey a month ago and couldn't be more happy that it started at the Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Santa Barbara. This place is of the highest quality from top to bottom. The Professors awesome & the learning atmosphere is unmatched!
I could rattle off a few other things I love about this place but I totally reccomend coming down and checking it the place out for yourself!
Great atmosphere for everyone from Kids and Adults to beginners and top tier athletes. Amazing staff Professor Rodrigo and his coaches always have a positive attitude. They do a great job of teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and making it easy and fun to learn.
I can not say enough about Gracie Barra, and all that is offered there!
It's more than just a place to take my son for a bit.. there are real connections, interactions, and experiences that help shape the person he is becoming.
He has a lot more confidence, seems more self assured, and sets goals for himself... all while learning how to defend himself in a healthy, centered way, while (mostly) remaining grounded and focused. Coach Ryan has played such a big role in all of this. It makes me feel good to see him take time to explain the technique to the children and help them out in areas they are having a little difficulty. Ryan is incredibly kind, patient, funny, and just seems like an all around good person, which the children definitely pick up on! My son will often talk about him and what he teaches them in class, and that warms me to know how much he is valued in my child's life.
It's important to have healthy role models, and the coaches, professors, students, etc.. which I see at Gracie Barra, they are all in alignment with that.
I have so much gratitude for everyone that holds space for us, and all of the other students, parents, families, and friends that come in as well. It feels good to be a part of a community that supports each other, helps one another when needed, and will also call you out (all for good reason!) when necessary.
Thank you for sharing your space, knowledge, insight, and time with us. We appreciate you all so so much, and look forward to continuing training with you!
This place is awesome, everyone was very welcoming and friendly when I first started a few months back and I'm very thankful for the muay Thai instructor (Ryan) who has had a lot of patience with me. At first I was very uncoordinated and had terrible foot work but it has improved so much! Highly recommend!

I have been training at Gracie Barra Santa Barbara for the past year. I cannot say enough good things about this place and the people who run it. They have a great schedule with multiple classes that I can choose from throughout the day. Both Professor Rodrigo and Coach Ighor have been amazing to learn from, and are great just to be around. I have found the other students to be very considerate and helpful. I am in awe of this place and how much fun I have had.
Gracie Barra Santa Barbara is a great school. I worked in Santa Barbara last summer on a contract. I'm a white belt from Pennsylvania and really enjoyed my experience there. The instructors are excellent and the atmosphere is just wonderful. What a friendly school. Whenever I get back to the West Coast I will visit again. I recommend this school to anyone.
My 10yo daughter loved it! All instructors are wonderful, thoughtful, sensitive and fun. They really work so well with the kids. My child started with reservations about starting martial art training, and now she looks like a born fighter. The classroom culture is safe, friendly and supportive of each child.
I have been training with Professor Rodrigo for over 4 years. This is a great school because everyone is very friendly and supportive. People of all ages train, some who just want to get in good shape but also guys looking to train for tournaments. Each class consists of a warm up, a stand up technique and then a few ground moves. Each week is dedicated to a certain position, and we go through new moves and details each day. In the advanced class we get at least thirty minutes of spar time.
Overall, great place to train, no big egos and plenty of fun!
The instructors here are very good at their job. They demonstrate an escape or other move and then have the students attempt it, all after stretching and warming up. Females now have their own changing room! Heads up: females are usually paired together, unless considered advanced enough to spar with males, or they are the odd one out.
