Mission Cliffs is an interesting mix of old school and new school. There's a spin studio, sauna, modern clean locker room, modern holds, routes actually get re-set. The walls themselves remind me of rock climbing indoors in the 90s, and pieces of colored tape are even left on the walls from that era. Don't forget your warm layers when you climb here, it's a quite chilly rock climbing gym. Locker supply was pretty good, bring a lock. Towels, shampoo, body wash, and conditioner are provided. The boulder area is pretty small and TR/lead area is expansive and quite tall in some spots, it's worth trying to track down a belay partner when visiting here.

One of the best climbing gyms in the city, with areas to top climb, boulder and lead climb, weight rooms, yoga and spin classes and ability to rent gear. Definitely gets crowded after work and on weekends but when you see it (and given its proximity to the city) you see why. Also love that they let kids of any age join, provided they're supervised. Sweet spot.

This is a beautiful climbing gym with a good, friendly culture and affordable membership fees. There is a wide range of top rope and bouldering runs. The bouldering walls have some creative routes, too, ending on top of the wall instead of dropping down. The top rope runs get pretty challenging pretty fast! And there are some very skilled other climbers with skills to aspire to.

Great if you enjoy top roping or lead. Slightly less great but still good if you want bouldering. There's also plenty of workout equipment, yoga classes and more.

This place is a bargain if you're climbing and working out here often!

Awesome walls with great routes set. Uses a lot of underclings and high steps. Also has a great gym area for an overall workout experience.
Sean (Shaun?) was super helpful and was able to make my experience renting a harness and equipment quick and painless. Highly recommend going here for a good workout or warm up before going outside.

Good setting, great for roped climbing, small bouldering area. Only issue is it gets super crowded in the evenings during the week.

Rude. Claire referred to me and my friend as "these people". Everyone acted as if the just could not be bothered with us. I used to climb at Mission Cliffs back in 13'. I was so excited to introduce my new friend to the gym but she wasn't impressed. As soon as they realized I had a belay card on file they held me completely responsible for teaching my friend the ropes. Literally. I insisted over and over again that I didn't feel comfortable doing that since I haven't climbed in awhile...after the "these people" comment I asked for my money back. Never going back.

Great climbing gym with good number and diversity of routes. Also has normal gym equipment / area for a non-climbing workout. Staff is generally helpful and friendly. Only downside is that it's been getting very, very crowded lately - especially on weeknights after work hours.

Good gym, only problem is that on weeknights, it's not unusual for every single locker in the locker room to be taken, every single bike rack spot taken, etc. Bouldering area is particularly crowded and it always feels like someone is going to fall on someone. They need more space or another gym in SF! It's too crowded here. the staff and the routes are great, though.

Good place for top roping and lead climbing. Their bouldering section is pretty small so it's almost always very crowded and cramped. I feel like someones going to fall on me everywhere I step so gotta move fast to get out of the way. I like that they have a small stretching/rest area at the top above the yoga room. No parking lot. Street Parking can be a pain if you're unlucky but usually isn't too terrible.

A great many top rope routes, but ZERO slab climbing, very little crack, stem and chimney. The one staff I met was a sarcastic jerk to my friend which was lame, since my friend is a super nice guy. Other facilities were good, workout machines, sauna, showers, etc, but the interpersonal friction spoiled the visit, plus all the roof and negative gradient climbing is no good for big wall training, so not worth the trouble for me to come back here. Will stick to Planet Granite for sure, even with a longer drive.

The gym is awesome! They have all necessary equipment for climbing and for working out. There are a steaming room, shower with shampoo etc., they also provide with towels. Gets really full during rush hour, so the time using cardio section is limited (30min) during this hours.

Love this place for providing me the chance to roughen and toughen up my hands and grow even manlier shoulders.

March 17, 2018 20:53

Mission Cliffs is awesome! Probably the biggest climbing gym in the Bay Area (I think?). Great variety of routes from bouldering to top roping to lead. Does get a bit crowded after work, but it's usually not an issue.

March 10, 2018 16:58

The gym is surprisingly large. I really like that the bouldering wall is separated from the harnessed rock climbing walls. I wish there were a few more lower level routes (like 0s and 1s) for novices like me, but there are still enough routes to choose from. There is plenty of equipment inside & the bathrooms/locker rooms are clean. The staff is pleasant enough and it is a close enough walk to Bart or the 22.

MC is the granddaddy of Bay Area climbing gyms with a good mix of lead and top rope climbing over a massive amount of terrain on which to get pumped. Bouldering area is small by comparison. If you're not a member, go in the morning for a discount on the day pass price.

February 11, 2018 21:31

The gym has great class options and top roping, but coming here during peak hours is the most claustrophobic gym experience I've ever had. The tiny bouldering section is not fun. Neither is free weights area. Total zoo.

Mission Cliffs is one of my favorite climbing gyms. Plenty of toprope space, a decent bouldering area and a good amount of workout/cardio equipment. The staff are friendly and the locker rooms are clean - they even have saunas. Great place for a regular climbing membership or a day pass.

Very nice climbing gym, with friendly and helpful staff! It was smooth to come in even without a belaying certificate, demonstrate my skills and then just start climbing.

The rope section is huge, and the only thing missing is some auto-belays. The boulder section is not so big, and even the easiest problems are quite tough on your finger joints, so maybe not the best for beginners. The gym seemed quite well equipped for being a climbing gym.

Great facility, but in a busy part of town so expect it to be packed on evenings and weekends! Bouldering area is small and gets very crowded. Lots of strength equipment. Plenty of bike parking out front.

October 20, 2017 11:24

Amazing place to climb! So many options to top rope. Not very big bouldering area though, so if you just want to boulder, go to Dogpatch boulders instead.

October 20, 2017 11:24

Mission Cliffs is amazing for rope climbing as well as bouldering. Huge top rope and lead routes, and a good sized boulder section sets this gym apart. Touchstone Climbing Gyms are some of the finest indoor climbing + fitness facilities in the world. Killer routes, friendly staff, and awesome community!

October 20, 2017 11:24

Ridiculously crowded but the place to go top roping if you're in the part of the city. The bouldering section is also pretty pathetic. Planet granite has more space for top roping and better bouldering, and Dogpatch has much better bouldering.

October 20, 2017 11:24

It's not only a great climbing gym, but also has some solid fitness classes and what looks like a decent weight room. At times it's a bit too crowded for my tastes, but I like that they keep later hours on certain nights. Also, the staff is friendly.

October 20, 2017 11:24

Pros: The rock wall portion of this gym is very extensive and there is a large variety in route difficulty, which is great for climbers of all skill levels. The sauna is new and very nice!
Cons: The gym gets very crowded on weeknights and weekends and it can be difficult to find an open route to climb without waiting a significant amount of time. The weights area is pretty small.
