**I made it to 5-0-0** I can't believe it! What a fabulous road with many more to go.
I've got so many backlogged reviews I can't even count, but I wanted to make the half-a-thousand-mark fitting. And here we go...
As a longtime yoga devotee (16+ years and counting!), I've seen yoga grow from the teeny tiny Ashram where I used to practice, to many-a-studios that have popped up on every other corner. Some of them have merit, and some of them...um...lots of "swami pretendanandas" as my teacher would say.
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center is the REAL DEAL. Classical Hatha Yoga at its purest. For those of you who know the Sivananda practice, it is a breath of fresh air from these crazy commercialized studios. I used to practice at this center back when they were located near Kezar Stadium. Now, they're a little further off the beaten path, but it's worth the trip.
You'll be learning classical yoga techniques. Chanting, pranayama, classical hatha yoga poses with minimal variations. **THIS IS NOT A VINYASA STUDIO** The key here is to really be present and take in the spiritual energy. The mood is very easy-going and low-key.
They also offer an entire range of classes to support the yogic lifestyle, including meditation, cooking, workshops, etc. I will certainly be back for those.
A few things to note:
1. Your first session is free, but I chose to donate $20. Just in the spirit of donation.
2. Parking on Vicente isn't too bad, but you may want to allow an extra 10 minutes to find a spot.
3. Puh-leeze turn your cell phones off. This is a VERY quiet, peaceful place.
What else can I say...San Francisco has a fine GEM.
