Had a great time here.
Coach Al and Justin were both friendly and accommodating with regards to rates and my schedule.
BJJ instruction was thematic and plenty of gripping and other details throughout.

I took a Saturday jiujitsu class with Justen. He is very knowledgable and detail-oriented in his instruction. It's pretty rare that I come out of a class with techniques and principles that I feel I can immediately incorporate into my game, but that's exactly what happened. The gym is clean, parking is plentiful (but be mindful of the 1-hour limits!), and the students are super friendly. This gym has a really good vibe and I'd highly recommend for beginners and advanced practitioners alike.

We dropped in at 5star martial arts in Pasadena twice last week before heading to Vegas for my son's tournament. We met Muay Thai instructor Al and BJJ instructor Justen. The atmosphere was welcoming and friendly, in fact before the start of the bjj class, coach Justen introduced my son to the class and wish him luck for his upcoming tournament. After the class, the students were very friendly and wished my son best of luck for his competition. It was a very warm reception for us. Coach Justen's way of teaching the series of techniques was very clear and technical. When his students ask questions, he answers by showing the move then explains the rationale behind it. If you're thinking of learning self defense, they have both stand up and ground fighting in one place. The Jiujitsu lineage of this gym can be traced from the founders, to Master Renzo Gracie, to Prof Shawn Williams, to coach Justen which is important if you're looking at the legitimacy of the instructors and their curriculum. My son and I would like to thank 5star for making our experience there productive & awesome. If you live in the area, this place is legit and top notch!

Incredible instruction, but most of all, very friendly environment. For anyone too intimidated to try a martial art, this is the perfect place to become comfortable. Check em out! I've been to the jujitsu classes only. Still looking forward to trying a muay thai class! Highly recommended!

Great place to train. I felt at home right away- both of my coaches are fantastic.

Love training with Coach Al and Coach Justin! I've trained under them for years, they're always helping me improve.
Great coaches and students. Super friendly training enviornment.
I travel quite a bit for work and there are 3 main things I look for when visiting a new BJJ academy. Quality instruction, a positive/friendly environment and location. This place is 5 out of 5 for all 3.
An affliate of Shawn Williams (Renzo Gracie), the classes are top notch with quality instruction. During my visit, Justen Hamilton was the instructor and he taught with concepts and details that catered to all levels. The students were all extremely friendly and the environment was one conducive to a growth mindset. Finally the location is beautiful. Extremely clean - mats were cleaned right after class - and plenty of parking, which anybody in the LA area would know is an anomaly.
Anyway, would highly recommend anybody in the area to check this place out.
On a scale of 1 to 5 -- its name says it all. 5 Star Martial Arts was exactly what I was looking for. As an older athlete, I have to make sure I'm patient with my training, and Justen and the gang really know what they're doing out here. Fantastic level of instruction and more than that, the people genuinely care and want you to be a part of their martial arts family.
The name says it all! I can't say enough about 5 star martial arts. It's such a family oriented place and the vibe is so welcoming and supportive. If you want top notch training and great people to train with this is the place.
The coaches are rad guys. They will take time to give you 'one-on-one' help. All the students are cool too. Everyone helps each other; no egos.
Instructors and front desk are awesome! Jamie's super friendly and funny. His enthusiasm makes the kids want to keep moving even when they feel like giving up. His motivations is off the hook! You guys rock! Thank you!
I'm older than most people starting out in Martial arts training. I only wanted to join because I was looking for a way to lose weight other than just running and treadmill. My friend, Wade, invited me to join a class and it's been the best decision I've made since moving to LA.
I feel really lucky that this gym accommodates guys like me who just want to get fit rather than train to fight. Although I feel more confident to defend myself, I never really wanted to learn to fight and these guys really push me to make myself a better person.
Professor Shawn Williams is the owner and a legend in the BJJ world but I can't say I've talked to him because I'm in the Muay Thai class. I have so much respect for those guys that do BJJ, I can't disrespect it by not being into it. With Muay Thai, Coach Al has been a great role model for teaching and training. He's really worked with me over the past few years to better my stance, punches, kicks and defense, all while getting a GREAT sweat on. It's also a testament that there's a lot of women who also feel comfortable at this gym.
I've been training at 5 Star (Pasadena location) for a bit over three months, and highly recommend it to anyone, but I'll throw in a special recommendation to all the ladies - As a woman who is relatively new to martial arts but has trained at several different schools over the last few years, I've found both the quality of instruction and the team culture at 5 Star to be excellent. The gym is super clean and has a very friendly, comfortable atmosphere. Training at 5 Star will give you all the benefits of martial arts that are so useful for everyone but especially us women - interpersonal/team building skills, self confidence, strength and conditioning, and of course self defense strategies. It's great to be able to train both Muay Thai and jiu jitsu, which are a great compliment to each other both in terms of technique and physical conditioning. If you are interested in jiu jitsu but still feel uncomfortable with the idea of grappling with strangers, a feeling I've heard several women express, this is the perfect place to come try out a class - everyone, including instructors and students, is smart, helpful and friendly and will give you all the tips and support you need to grow to love this sport and achieve your goals. Ladies, come train!
