Dartanian Jiu Jitsu remains a true martial arts academy. You will not be promoted solely based on time invested, but rather a combination of time and Dartanian's judgement of your technical proficiency. There is a review below from F.Klink that I would like to address as a 10-year student of Dartanian's:

"The longer a teacher holds his students from advancement the more money he makes."
^ Dartanian Jiu Jitsu makes its income from the monthly fees of its students. Dartanian does not charge for belt promotions. In fact, the opposite of F.Klink's comment is true; individuals who are only interested in being promoted will leave the academy because they are being "held back." We are not individuals, we are a team! A visit to the academy will show that all belt levels are willing to and encouraged by Dartanian to teach lower belts at all times, because the best way to reinforce good technique is to teach.

I am a student of this academy and I pay my dues the same way I did when I was a new student. Please do not allow one poor review to stop you from coming by and checking out our academy. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and no academy is perfect, but I would argue that Dartanian's academy is the closest to it in the area. Come by and see for yourself! I and everyone on the team love to teach new students, even if your intention is to learn self defense over only a month or two. See you on the mats! Cheers!

Altough I have not trained for a hot minute, I can say from personal experience that this is one of the best bjj gym's you can go to, full of friendly and respectful people. Nobody has big egos, Dartanian is one of the nicest people you will meet.

So it's no secret that Professor Bagby knows Jiu-Jitsu. You can just google him to find that out. What's not as obvious is how good a teacher he is.

"Those who can't do, teach" has always been nonsense. Teaching is a specific skill. It requires patience, dedication, and being able to communicate ideas to people who might learn very differently. It's HARD. But Professor Bagby is really good at it. He won't just teach you what to do, he'll teach you the philosophy and the why behind it.

No doubt about it, the head instructor knows his stuff. But he has lost his teaching ways.
He holds students back because of money.
The longer a teacher holds his students from advancement the more money he makes.
This is the case at this studio.
I would not recommend.

For reference I've been training Brazilian jiu-jitsu for 11 years and am currently a brown belt.

Dartanian BJJ is not as well known as some of the bigger names in LA, but it's certainly one of the best.

Dartanian is one of the first 12 American BJJ black belts, and has high level experience in both Judo and wrestling. His knowledge of grappling and fighting in general is quite extraordinary, and is matched by his ability and passion for sharing that knowledge.

I've been training here for less than a year, and feel like I've improved more than in the last five.

Come check out the place, I promise you won't be disappointed!
