Never been to a climbing gym before so nothing to compare this to. But the people that work there were nice.

I guess standards for a 4 star gym are alot lower in So-Cal. $33 dollar day pass unless you use Groupon. The dirtiest holds I have ever climbed and don't appear to have been washed ever. The setting for the bouldering was sub-par but not terrible. On a facilities note they have no drinking fountain so sink water only. They have no wifi, no real weights area, high prices, no A/C, and good luck getting any help from the staff. Pick any other gym in So-Cal or head up north where the 1 star gyms are better.

Had the most fun date with hubby here! This place is very kid friendly as well!

This is a decent rock gym. Routes are changed often. Only downside is that they should wash the holds.

This place is small and it feels crowded and cramped. The people here however are very kind and generous; full of adventure. I had a great time climbing here and they offer fun for all skill levels. It was pretty cheap too!

I love working out here. I have a blast with my wife and we always feel like we get a solid amount of exercise. Would recommend for dates, families, and even solo time.

Didn't get 5 stars because there isn't any AC, so you're basically sweating whether you climb a lot or not.

Staff was super friendly though, and the gym was generally pretty clean.

Please get AC!

What a cool place. The staff is polite, the climbing community is awesome and the facility is what's clean. I love how often they change the routes. We bring the whole family 6 to 43 years old and never feel out of place. I do recommend you go as early as you can. The place gets packed in the evenings. Unless you are looking for a cool place to hangout.

Great beginning climbing gym! I have been able to use this gym to get to the next level in my climbing. I feel it's been a great little local gym. It's best for bouldering here!

If you enjoy a sufferfest come here. They wanted me to pay $33 for a day pass lol...it's quite small, there's no a/c and no water fountain; doesn't seem like they wash the holds. Unless it's the closest gym to you it's not worth it. If you are visiting from out of town check groupon first.

2 for 1 deal on Tuesday!!
What a fun experience. Wow !
We were lucky to have taken the intro class with Mark and he was a great instructor. He took his time explaining the safety steps and showing us the ropes - literally! Lol
He was fantastic. He was very careful and waited with us until we got a hang of the whole thing. And after 30 minutes we were doing our own buckling and climbings.
Having this deal really is a great opportunity, especially for beginnings, to try it out to see if they like it.
The day pass is $33 per person, but like I said on Tuesday's its 2 for the price of 1. And the membership is $36, so for $3 more you get to have a whole month pass with unlimited climbers and yoga classes.
I highly recommend this place or their many other locations.

Very nice staff. Unfortunately no AC so it became unbearable with this summer heat. Went for a birthday party.

Decent sized. Wouldn't say big at all. No AC. But climbing you can do!

I took my niece and nephew here so it's a great place for kids. They train you how to safely secure and anchor the kids. Great great great

Smaller than the South Bay location, but it does have a room for yoga classes, which is also kind of small. The yoga class on Sundays 6:30-7:30p is VERY RELAXING. The parking lot is directly outside and the atmosphere of this long beach location is so therapeutic.

Nice place for a date. They have all types of rock difficulties.

4 stars because one of the employees was kind of a dick

I've been climbing here for about a year and a half and have had some good days and climbs here. But lately this gym is really starting to wear on me; it's close to me so I go here most often. (I sometimes make the drive to the South Bay location for a much better experience). The gym is always dirty and grungy with chalk dust on every conceivable surface and dust bunnies, hair, and old tape balls lurking in the corners. I don't know how often they vacuum or clean but it doesn't seem like very often. The bathrooms are in dire need of a deep cleaning. They have been adding some nice posters and decorations lately though to spruce up the place. The staff is sometimes friendly and sometimes kind of stuck up and acting like a clique chilling behind the counter. I had one guy get snippy with me when I didn't quite hear what he said. Totally uncalled for.

And then there's the routes... The routes seem to be getting progressively worse. A lot of boulder problems are too hard for the rating and are confusing to follow. There are sometimes two routes of the same color set too close to each other and you can't tell where each goes. Or routes that just don't make sense and have you saying "WTH?" One V2+ I tried today had a really high foothold start and these thin holds that felt like V3+ or V4. Even some of the V0s I've done to warm up have these weird crimpy holds that I usually only see on V2 or V3. It's V0 for crying out loud, a beginner route! It's like the setters are stoned or sadistic in setting these routes. The lighting needs work here also, it's much too dim in some areas. I've heard good things about the Riverside location and am thinking of making the trek out there occasionally.

I had my 27th Birthday Party here. The staff was helpful and encouraging, the walls were challenging but doable to a bunch of newcomers as well as the more experienced, the place was clean, well lit, and well maintained. I look forward to visiting again in the future!

Awesome staff, fun climbs, and great vibes all around make Hangar 18 Long Beach one of the best Hangar 18 gyms by far!

I've been bouldering and top roping for years now and I always find myself going to Hangar 18 because they are one of the most affordable climbing gyms in SoCal. Some of the Hangar locations are better than others due to overall maintenance and staff. This location is definitely a lot more well maintained, and is also one of the newest locations. The crash pads are thick and don't look like they are falling apart. There's an even number of top roping and bouldering areas, and the overall layout of the climbing gym is very welcoming. It feels a lot more open and less claustrophobic when there's more people around...

My friends and I came to utilize our monthly membership that was ending and I finally convinced them to take a belaying class, since they're the only been doing bouldering. The staff were more than happy to assist us and let us use the rental equipment. They were patient and really helpful in walking us through each step, with adequate time to practice tying the figure 8 knot and appropriate usage of the Grigri top roping device. After top roping for about an hour we did some bouldering and the other members of the gym were so supportive and helpful in helping us through certain routes we were stuck at. Everyone seems to treat each other like family here which is really awesome. If I didn't live so far away I think I'd definitely become a regular here!

Me and the gf tried out the gym and had a fantastic time! We were really nervous at first but our instructor was really friendly and patient with us. By the end of the day our group was exhausted and extremely satisfied with our experience!

Love this climbing gym. I will say I prefer the South Bay location just due to it being bigger but this place is still great

I came here for the first time a couple days ago and the staff did a great job at making me feel welcome here. I was initially going to get a day pass just to try it out, but then they told me I was probably better off signing up for a month *FOR JUST 5 DOLLARS* as opposed to paying quadruple that, for a day pass and rental. I gladly obliged and after my first experience climbing, I'm sure it won't be my last.

I had never climbed before and they didn't think to make sure to go over stuff with me. Basically just had me sign waivers and that's it. Finally I asked for help, and someone came over to give me the official lesson. In reality there should be a person teaching every new person that walks in how to work the equipment. Safety is important and you want people to continue to come to rock climb right????.....

February 14, 2018 16:06

I'm a newer climber. The equipment and staff helped put me at ease, which is important to me considering I'm trusting the equipment to keep me safe. They're constantly changing the challenges, so it's never the same thing twice, and I've seen intermediate and advanced climbers being challenged on their climbs as well. Solid spot.

I've been climbing in Colorado for years but my brother lives in SoCal so I was excited to bring him here and show him the ropes.

Arrived at about 10:05 and had to do waivers. Then because my brother is new they told us he'd have to do a basic class which they only do on the top of the hour. They wanted us to wait until 11 and would not let me teach him. (They had also JUST opened at 10..)

I inquired why this policy is not on their website (it currently shows "no appointment required") and they all but told me to screw off.

Not customer-oriented so we ended up leaving. I'll wait for him to come to Boulder, and a gym that actually cares about its patrons.

I went with my sister and nieces to learn to climb with a top rope. We had to be patient because they seemed a bit understaffed, but overall it was great! We were all able to climb and have a lot of fun. None of us have much experience or are in great shape, and my nieces are 10 and 14.

Good place for beginners. Staff is very laid back and willing to help. Can get very busy during the evening weekdays. Bouldering can get crowded but everyone is willing to take turns in spaces. Also great for kids! Saw toddlers climbing walls and kids having fun. Also has a small gym area and yoga classes.

Great little gym!

It's not as big or flashy as some of the gyms in LA, but they also aren't charging $80 a month or an initiation fee. I think a lot of the negative reviews on here might be from a while ago, because the gym has changed quite a bit over the past year.

They've made a lot of improvement on both the climbing holds and the route setting. They reset a large swath of holds (approx 20-30 ft wide) every Monday so the gym is constantly changing. They're also continually adding new styles of holds. Some of them I've never encountered at any other gym. The grading is on the stiff side. After climbing here for a while I started checking out other gyms, and realized that routes are typically a full grade lower (v4 here is about v5 at most other gyms).

Staff is friendly, and so are the local climbers. Amenities aside from climbing are pretty minimal, but they do have yoga classes for members. They've started setting a World Cup problem as well for those who want to test their skills against the pros. Good luck!

October 24, 2017 13:36

One guy working there with a beard had a nasty attitude. Was not helpful, he did not inform us about pricing, lessons on how to do the knots with the ropes, after we asked him he replied, it's a 30 dollar course. I can not stress on how rude he was. I wish I would got his name to put on here. I was waiting for almost 10 mins before I asked him for my son's climbing shoes. Work on your customer service skills.

October 24, 2017 13:36

Amazing staff. Friendly people. Great climbs.

October 24, 2017 13:36

Cheap annual membership, routes changed weekly. A bit on the strengthy dude though. Big moves and lots of dynos.

October 24, 2017 13:36

This place is awesome! They have a good combination of bouldering, lead climbing and belaying. Shoe rentals are $3 if you dont have your own and everyone who works there is super nice and accommodating. They also offer a class to learn belaying if it's your first time :)
