We signed up for Kicks Karate through Moco Recreation, just in case our kiddo may not want to continue (we have tried several "sports" before but nothing we wanted to continue) and thinking this would be an easy out after the session was over... but after the FIRST class we knew we would be back long term! We're now approaching our second belt test and don't see an end anytime soon!
Our 4 year old can be timid or shy when starting new activities but the instructors were sooo fun and inviting and UNDERSTANDING! One day he was having a tough time with the transition into class time and refused to join them on the mat or participate. One instructor (without hesitation) came over and tried coaxing him, eventually sitting down on the floor with him and talking about super heroes and other things to build a connection, she tried and tried gently to get him to join the group, after 10 minute she realized it wasn't going to happen so she went over and got a striking paper and blocker and worked with him at his own pace, in his safe space, literally sitting on the floor by the front door, so he would learn what everyone else did but in his own time and space.I was VERY impressed and continue to be impressed!
We are now several months in and I have seen this several times with other new kiddos, the instructors don't bat an eye and will take the time needed to work at the kids pace to get them excited, NEVER FORCING, its about keeping it fun and they know the importance of that. All of the instructors have never-ending energy and enthusiasm.
I have seen a change in my kiddos behavior and now have phrases to use like "are you having good self control right now?" to help his behavior at home and while out.
We are VERY happy we joined!
